sGreenpeace must pay pipeline company nearly $667 million over Standing Rock protests, jury say
A North Dakota jury on Wednesday found Greenpeace liable for defamation and other charges related to protests at the Dakota Access Pipeline, awarding a Texas-based pipeline company hundreds of millions in damages, according to multiple reports, a ruling the environmental advocacy group warned could result in “financial ruin” as it likely faces bankruptcy.
A nine-person jury in Mandan, North Dakota, awarded Energy Transfer about $300 million in damages from Greenpeace, after the company accused the group of defamation, trespassing, nuisance, civil conspiracy and other claims, according to the Associated Press.
Greenpeace must pay a Texas-based pipeline company nearly $667 million in damages for the environmental advocacy group’s role in 2016-2017 protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota, a jury said Wednesday.
The verdict in North Dakota state court came after two days of deliberations in a trial where pipeline company Energy Transfer accused Greenpeace of paying protesters to disrupt construction of the pipeline unlawfully and spreading falsehoods about the controversial project, located near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
The verdict included damages for defamation, trespassing and conspiracy. The jury awarded more than $400 million in punitive damages, which are intended to punish defendants for their conduct.
This is about cause and effect. The pipeline was supporting the state with great paying, full-time jobs with a lot of family benefits. When the lawsuit started in 2019 (note the year meagain), they were asking $300 MIL. 2025? they got between $660MIL and $670MIL. If you check this out on your own, you'll see a lot of different amounts from reputable sources, so I'm not sure if people are guessing or what. I used Reuters and CNN for references.
