If the United States’ economy were an athlete, right now it would be peak LeBron James. If it were a pop star, it would be peak Taylor Swift. Four years ago, the pandemic temporarily brought much of the world economy to a halt. Since then, America’s economic performance has left other countries in the dust and even broken some of its own records. The growth rate is high, the unemployment rate is at historic lows, household wealth is surging, and wages are rising faster than costs, especially for the working class. There are many ways to define a good economy. America is in tremendous shape according to just about any of them.

Right now America’s economic-growth rate is the envy of the world. From the end of 2019 to the end of 2023, U.S. GDP grew by 8.2 percent—nearly twice as fast as Canada’s, three times as fast as the European Union’s, and more than eight times as fast as the United Kingdom’s.

“It’s hard to think of a time when the U.S. economy has diverged so fundamentally from its peers,” Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, told me. Over the past year, some of the world’s biggest economies, including those of Japan and Germany, have fallen into recession, complete with mass layoffs and angry street protests. In the U.S., however, the post-pandemic recession never arrived. The economy just keeps growing.

***

But if Trump is elected, he's going to fuck up all the progress we've made as a country.

But Donna... Trump says the economy is horrible!

  2. by Donna on October 16, 2024 7:47 am

MAGAs LOVE horribleness. Nr. Horrible himself's entire canpaign is centered around the notion that America is horrible.

  3. by HatetheSwamp on October 16, 2024 8:11 am

Let me start off with two words. I support the Dingbat. I support Cackles Mckneepads. But,...

That is as may be, Donna. But, groceries are still getting waaaaaaaaaay more expensive and, if you're a y'ung'ne hoping to be able to afford a mortgage payment? Oy freakin friggin EFFINvey!

Two groups of people are going to settle this election:

    1. The small number of the genuinely uncommitted, and,
    2. The people who are leaning towards the Dingbat or OrangeTurdBad but may still change their mind.

Most of those people are more likely to be shopping at Wal-Mart than to be impressed by articles on the very pro-Cackles theatlantic.com.

    Agree?

Too many Americans don't understand that the inflation we've been experiencing is worldwide, and that the US has fared far better than any other country. I wish that Kamala and Tim would explain that during rallies, debates and interviews.

  5. by HatetheSwamp on October 16, 2024 8:35 am

Re: "Too many Americans don't understand..."

Do you "understand" how sanctimonious and condescending you come across? Have you been taking UNDERSTAND lessons from isle.

It's not that you realize that THEY don't understand. It's that you think YOU do.

When inflation here was still rising to its peak of 9% under the "dithering and diminished" Doddering Old Fool,... the "feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap"... was rubbing our people's noses in their suffering, saying, "This inflation is transitory." Which it wasn't.

    How friggin superior. How EFFINinsensitive!

pb noted, at the time, that that attitude was asking for trouble. Those days were the time for some good old-fashioned Bill Clinton, "I feel your pain."

But, no. Today's progressives are too sanctimonious to care enough to be sensitive to the concerns of the suffering...

    ...just like you.

  6. by Ponderer on October 16, 2024 8:58 am

You are wrong and you are a fuckingasshle, Bill.

Just because you are so stupid that you can't for the life of you understand the reality that Donna is talking about, it makes her sanctimonious and condescending?

And just whatthefuck is Trump going to do to make eggs cost less? Impose tariffs on supermarkets that charge too much? His pig-ignorant understanding of what tariffs do seems to be his answer to everything.

  7. by HatetheSwamp on October 16, 2024 9:06 am

    po,

I understand the economic realities better than you two do as you mindlessly absorb woke propaganda.

But, I'm still right on this point. Trump is a horrible candidate running a terrible campaign. But, he's not holier than thou.

In the end, because of that, he may pull this election out!

    ... and I, WE, ain't.

    Nuthin new there. Bahahahahahahahahahaha

"Too many Americans don't understand that the inflation we've been experiencing is worldwide, and that the US has fared far better than any other country." ~ Donna

That’s a simple fact, too many Americans really and truly don't understand the causes of inflation or how the economy really works. Hate thinks stating facts like that is sanctimonious, his favorite word by the way, and the funny part is that he doesn’t seem to understand how ironic it is for him of all people to call someone else sanctimonious !! LoL

Unfortunately, Trump is able to hone in on his followers ignorance regarding the economy and he is adept at reading and selectively exploiting their personality traits. I don’t know how (or if it’s even possible) to effectively combat these things.

The Us economy is doing well and its inflation that was transitory and worldwide is under control. Just one note on that, Donna, Canada is doing far netter than anyone on inflation. The latest is 1.6%: something others can only dream of. In fact, interest rates here have already had cuts totalling .5% and we expect another next month of a fill .5%.

Few laymen understand inflation, and almost none realise that the Russian war on Ukraine is still preventing it from being fully controlled. It is almost solely responsible for high energy costs.

Polls show that Americans believe Trump would be better for the economy than Harris, which is sad/funny.

  12. by HatetheSwamp on October 16, 2024 10:15 am

"The Us economy is doing well and its inflation that was transitory and worldwide is under control."

That notwithstanding, voters give Trump higher grades on the economy than the Dingbat.

Again, "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap's" administration's lack of sensitivity to the plight of the people suffering from inflation is their political problem today,... not the current rate of inflation.

And, pb called that from the very beginning.

All the "dithering and diminished" Doddering Old Fool needed to say at the time, was, convincingly, "I feel your pain."

Next to the Afghanistan withdrawal fiasco, that has been his biggest mistake.

Many people are ignoramuses when it comes to the economy. I was reading today about a restaurateur who blames Biden for the cost of eggs. Bird flu killed chickens reducing the supply of eggs . Reduced supply=higher prices. Likewise gasoline was cheaper in 2020 when people were staying home and working remotely. Low demand=lower prices.

It is strange that people would trust Trump more with the economy despite the long term records that show Democrats have historically been better stewards of the economy. It is the same in Canada where people believe the Conservatives are better and I tire of posting evidence to prove the opposite. People will believe what they want to believe and no evidence will shake them: particularly as it is the GOP and the Conservatives that tell them and family loyalties are with the ones that have always told the best and biggest lies.

  16. by HatetheSwamp on October 17, 2024 8:16 am

"Many people are ignoramuses when it comes to the economy."

    Classic woke sanctimony and condescension.

"It is strange that people would trust Trump more with the economy despite the long term records that show Democrats have historically been better stewards of the economy."

    Meagain,

We really do need a link on that. Eisenhower and Reagan absolutely rocked the economy. Carter and Biden killed it... unless you can provide data.

  18. by Ponderer on October 17, 2024 8:34 am

"Eisenhower and Reagan absolutely rocked the economy. Carter and Biden killed it..." -Hate

That's possibly the stupidest thing you have ever said in here. Absolutely and totally idiotic. Shear and utter bullshit.

And to say that the pedojoe "economy" is good? WTFO? Because of stupid, woke assertions, it took us about ONE YEAR to climb to 9%. he sold off oil reserves to drive prices up (which tied up all goods and services) so that only the rich could afford shit. for the dim, wokesters on this site, I'm happy to hear that none of you have any financial issues at all and you can scorn the workers that give you that food. It goes along with your romantic infatuation with slavery. Those little black and brown people weren't really "abused" like trumpster says. It's just a figment of MAGA's imagination!

I think (other than meagain) I'm the only one that's actually lived in other countries. I sincerely think making that comparison is a stupid assertion.

  20. by islander on October 17, 2024 9:05 am

Biden inherited from Trump a disastrous failing economy. That's a fact.

Biden turned the economy around and the next president will inherit the strongest economy in the world. That's another fact.

This is another reason why Trump and his MAGA followers don't like facts

  21. by Donna on October 17, 2024 9:13 am

The inflation the US has experienced was and still is worldwide, and the US has recovered from it better than any other nation - full stop. Obfuscating America's success doesn't change that fact.

  22. by Ponderer on October 17, 2024 9:15 am

"And to say that the pedojoe "economy" is good? WTFO?" -olde dude

Biden's economy had to start with the chaotic, disastrous economy that Trump left him with. And no one thought that he'd be able to pull much of anything off in repairing the damage Trump did. But he surprised everyone! Even me. He far surpassed the minimum that I expected of him.

Thanks to Biden and his policies, America was able to ride out a world-wide economic disaster that the world-wide pandemic caused and come out of it with the strongest economy in the entire world.

Yeah, inflation got pretty bad. It was FAR worse in every other country

You know, I'm kinda weary of how MAGA Hat Republicans like Hate and olde dude expect absolute perfection from a Democratic administration, yet are perfectly happy to blithely ignore and brainlessly excuse every destructive action, incompetent mistake, and pig-ignorantly stupid endeavor that any GOP administration ever commits.

Hypocrisy like theirs can be very exhausting to keep up with.

  23. by HatetheSwamp on October 17, 2024 9:27 am

"The inflation the US has experienced was and still is worldwide, and the US has recovered from it better than any other nation - full stop. Obfuscating America's success doesn't change that fact."

I, essentially, agree. Except for the obfuscation part which is sanctimonious and condescending.

I said at the time, that Joe and his gang dug their own grave by not saying that we feel your pain.

Joe asked for this. He got it.

  24. by Donna on October 17, 2024 9:38 am

So many things I say seem sanctimonious and condescending to you because of your fragile ego. Sounds like a daddy issue.

  25. by HatetheSwamp on October 17, 2024 9:48 am

    Yeah.

I'm stoopid. And, deeply emotionally flawed.

    But, you? Youdabomb!

I hear that, in 025 dictionaries, for the entry for "Practically Perfect in every way," they're going to replace the sketch of Mary Poppins and insert a photo of you!

    Keehee ha!
