You are right, I haven't heard of them. They seem like serious musicians who probably were the most talented kids in their school orchestras and youth symphonies.

    Interesting.

But I can't exclude the possibility that there is at least one rock and roll band that no one has ever heard that's greater.

.... until you hear the back story and see what they've done. The Waterboys are basically one guy - Mike Scott - who puts together new bands for almost every album and tour and the quality of the music never drops. The band World Party is an offshoot of the Waterboys - Scott and WP's Kurt Wallinger were in the Waterboys together and they were writing so much great music, Scott told Kurt he should break off and form his own band. World Party has also put out 4 or 5 great albums too (Wallinger suffered a brain aneurism that required years in recovery).

But check out their catalog and the (unbelievable) list of past members in the band at the wiki link below. Every album is amazing, but This is the Sea still stands as their best - it really should be considered one of the greatest albums of the 80s.

    Donna speaking...

The Waterboys sound great in that vid. I had heard of them, but I wasn't familiar with any of their music.

There are plenty of great bands that didn't hit as big as they deserved. The first artist that comes to mind for me is the 70s/80s band called Crack The Sky.

You're back? If I knew you were going to be here I would have posted a 70s band for you. Like these guys - not as good as the Waterboys - but right in there with Crack the Sky and the others who should have been bigger. A nice mellow one...

I had also heard of the 70s band Artful Dodger but I wasn't familiar with any of their songs.

Over the past five or so years, I've been turning to blues stations to hear new rock as well as rock that isn't brand new, but rock I missed because all the rock stations are stuck on oldies. I've been hearing a lot of great new or newish blues rock on blues outlets. This is rock that shares many of the same musical elements we hear in "classic" rock bands like The Doors and early Zeppelin. Buddy Guy is a particularly talented blues rock guitarist who's almost never played on rock stations.

He's never played on rock stations. I think we might only have one rock station left down here - The Beach - which plays 80s and 90s. The only time I listen to it is when I forget to bring my iPod with me in the car. It's basically one song... 10 commercials... two songs... five minutes of mindless discussion about nothing and 15 commercials... one song...

Ever heard Richard Orange? He only made one album which was supposedly his take on what the Beatles would sound like if they had never broken up...
