President Donald Trump has pardoned Austin native Ross William Ulbricht, the founder of the online drug marketplace Silk Road.

Trump announced the pardon Tuesday evening on his social media platform Truth Social, calling Ulbricht's sentence "ridiculous."

Trump said he granted the full pardon in honor of Ulbricht's mother "and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly." Trump pledged during a speech at the Libertarian National Convention in May 2024 to commute Ulbricht's sentence on the first day of his administration.

Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 and found guilty two years later on a variety of charges including drug trafficking, computer hacking and money laundering related to Silk Road. He quickly became a Libertarian hero following his initial arrest. The Libertarian Party — which has generally opposed to criminal drug policies and supported drug legalization — pushed for his release. Ulbricht has been held at the U.S. Penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona.

It is estimated that .8% of the fentanyl that enters the US from outside is from Canada while no figures of the reverse are available, (the US would not like to reveal them). Just a few days ago the biggest drug bust in Canadian history took place. Cocaine from a Mexican Cartel that crossed the Southern border and the border into Canada.
