Again, "do the right thing for the right reason" has completely gone awry.
The corrupt former Pennsylvania judge convicted of funneling juveniles to for-profit detention facilities in exchange for $2.1 million in kickbacks had his lengthy prison sentence commuted Thursday by President Biden.
Former Luzerne County Judge Michael Conahan, the jurist at the center of the so-called “Kids-for-Cash” scandal, was among 1,499 commutations the 82-year-old lame-duck president granted in the largest presidential act of clemency on a single day in modern history, according to the White House.
“I am shocked and I am hurt,” Sandy Fonzo, whose son committed suicide after he was locked up as part of the scheme orchestrated by Conahan and former judge Mark Ciavarella, said in a statement.
More than 2,500 children between 2003 and 2008 were potentially given disproportionate sentences by Conahan and Ciavarella in order to populate the private detention centers paying them the kickbacks, investigators believe.
Thousands of juvenile sentences were vacated by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in the wake of the scandal.

I agree - shameful.
IMO there should be zero executively ordered pardons or commutations.

Agree with Donna. There should be some sort of system to address wrongful convictions and penalties - but it needs to have checks and balances. It can't be one person selling pardons which is what we have now. Guaranteed that "judge" just passed some of that cash he made off imprisoning innocent kids to the Biden Crime Family.

The number of wrongful convictions is staggering. Long ago, the Law department of an American university analysed all the death sentences in America for the first half of the twentieth century and found that 400 innocent persons had been executed. I would expect the ratio for lesser crimes to be even higher given the less rigorous process and lesser consequence.
The whole justice system needs overhauling and the bar for conviction raised.
I suspect the rates in other countries would be similar.
I read that somewhere 50 years or more ago and ever since I have been critical of the justice system.

To meagain's point. The great majority of people convicted for J6 riot activities have been abused by "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap's" DOJ and should be pardoned before the sun sets on Inauguration Day.
by oldedude on December 13, 2024 7:55 pm Agreed. Many of those are going away before the lawyers are arrested and disbarred.
by Curt_Anderson on December 13, 2024 8:25 pm Have you guys considered that Biden commuted that guy for two reasons?
1. To own MAGA.
2. To distract people from his pardon of Hunter.
by oldedude on December 14, 2024 2:38 am I don't really care. With joes' abuse of justice which is a theme in the pedojoe administration I just consider the source. This a*hole was paid more to extend the time the kids spent in the center. Basically, 5,000 kids a year were given extended sentences. I don't think there's any excuse at all. I do agree with indy. Someone paid joe to commute the sentence. This is the justice system you want. You're making excuses for it and supporting both the system and the people. It has the ethics of the Sauds or Colombians. And reminds me of the "Indian Schools" in the US, Canada, and Australia.

olde dude: I agree with you 100%.

Everyone is outraged by that pardon, including PA governor Josh Shapiro.

by oldedude on December 15, 2024 8:22 pm So you don't have enough but "whatthefuckabouisms."
So now you're saying that everyone with corruption charges should be allowed to go free also. After all that incessant whining about public corruption.
Dimora spent more than a decade behind bars for corruption.
The act by Biden, known as clemency, is the largest in U.S. presidential history. It came for people who were convicted of non-violent crimes and released under the The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
The CARES Act allowed those released to be placed in home confinement. That happened for Dimora in June of 2023. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Dimora is living with family in Streetsboro. He was to remain on home confinement until 2030.
Dimora and Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo were was arrested in 2010 for giving out county contracts to contractors in exchange for money, gifts and vacation trips. Russo died in 2022 after he was released from prison.
Dimora was originally sentenced to 28 years in prison in 2012.

First thing I said was no pardons without some sort of checks and balances system in place.
