News outlets say presidential debates are essential. Wrong, they are a waste of time.

NBC, CNN and Fox News Join 9 Other Outlets Urging Trump and Biden to Commit to Election Debates
"There is simply no substitute for the candidates debating with each other, and before the American people, their visions for the future of our nation," the statement reads.

Presidential debates don't reveal anything about how a candidate will perform in office. Especially when both candidates have already been in office so we already know how they will conduct themselves. We won't learn anything new about "their visions for the future of our nation".

Going back to the Kennedy-Nixon debates, can you name anything substantive that you learned about a candidate in any debate? All that people remember are embarrassing flubs and well-rehearsed quips. It's an exercise of style over substance.

There is a reason why normal job interviews don't include a debate between job applicants. Debating with the rules as set up by the debating commission is not a skill set required for any job. The job of president, like any job, does not forbid a person from using any and all resources and information they want to accomplish the job. Unlike the debates, there isn't a one or two minute time limit for a president to respond to a question. A president can consult with advisors about any issue.

Vice presidential debates are more of a waste of time.

I want to see Joe juiced up again, like he was for the State of the Union, in full roid rage. Line that up against Trump? It'll be memorable.

    Guaranteed.

And from a logical standpoint, since nothing ever changes in the world, and there's nothing new coming around, I might agree with you. I mean things like no 10/7. No direct threat from Iran. No threat of "Death to America" is now publicly being spoken in the media (of course, those are "protected" words, because it's radical Islam saying it).

DPRK hasn't activated it's military unilaterally for the first time in decades. So there's no reason to have candidates put their views out there.

I will agree with you on one thing though. The talk overs, and all that is a waste of time.

Also Lead. I also look at body language, posture and other things while the candidates "do their thing." It's also really good to see what tells they have. That way you can look for them later.

    OD,

If Curt's honest, he'll admit that he knows a debate will be a disaster for "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap."

If he's, the brainless blithering fool, he loses. See link. Or, he's the hyped up psycho of the State of the Union, America's scared to death.

    "Asufutimaehaehfutbw"

You can actually Google the word. The "dithering and diminished" Doddering Old Fool is a linguistic genius... Our own Shakespeare.

    Asufutimaehaehfutbw?

I think that should be our next national holiday. Asufutimaehaehfutbw Day. Make it November 20, the Former Truck Driver's birthday.

Imagine the cost to Hallmark to print a Asufutimaehaehfutbw Day card!

    Joe's sooooooo much fun!

People judged Joe Biden the winner the last time he debated Donald Trump. See link. By the way, four years ago there were three debates scheduled. Trump didn’t show up for the second one. He also did not debate his Republican primary rivals. I suspect Trump enjoys debating as much as he does testifying under oath.

HtS, you’ve done this before. You have lowered expectations for Joe Biden to the point where all he needs to do is show up to be a win for him.

    Curt,

Joe isn't as sharp as he was four years ago. Asufutimaehaehfutbw!!!!!

If you really think that the "dithering and diminished" Doddering Old Fool will hand Trump his head in a debate, you'd be all in favor, I'm sure.

But, if it happens, we'll get the juiced up, roid rage version... which was perfectly fine for a speech in which he could toss raw meat to the radicals in the base. But, on an occasion that would require making a positive impression on moderate and independent voters, oy... as po'd say, freakin friggin EFFINvey!

The debates were always a bit of a show, but once the media took them over from the League of Women Voters it turned into "reality" TV.

    I'll agree with that also.

I agree we never hear about “visions” for the country. Remember Hillary wouldn’t even tell us her platform much less any future visions.

  13. by Curt_Anderson on April 16, 2024 10:55 am
    Indy,
I don't remember that. Was the question even asked? I have a hard time imagining a moderator asking Hillary to say what her (the Democrats' platform actually) platform is..."and you have 60 seconds to respond".

The televised presidential debates aren't like the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 in which the two rivals spoke for hours at a time.

I do remember the Republicans didn't even have a platform in 2020.

  14. by Indy! on April 16, 2024 12:50 pm

Bet you don't remember that you couldn't list anything off Hillary's platform back then either. I put that question to every Hillary supporter...

"Taking abortion off the board - name one of Hillary's policy proposals."

You and everybody else came up with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. And Hillary never discussed them either - outside of "Universal healthcare will NEVER happen!!!" (insert evil Hillary cackle here).

You can't come up with any now either.

(Curt googles Hillary platform in... 3, 2, 1...)
