If you want a good indication as to how the major party presidential candidates are doing, pay attention to where they are campaigning. Candidates have access to the most reliable private polling. This is beyond the polling that we, the general public, see in media reports. Since Richard Nixon promised to campaign in all 50 states in his unsuccessful run for president in 1960, candidates have learned to focus on swing states and not waste their energy on the deep red or deep blue states.

When a candidate holds a public campaign event, it's for two possible reasons: either they were ahead in a state they need but have detected an erosion of support which they want to counteract, or it is a state in which they were behind but now see they have a shot at winning. In other words, there is much to be inferred if a candidate is playing offense or defense.

On a similar note, there is much to be gleaned as to where the campaigns are running ads. In very blue Oregon, I have yet to see presidential campaign ad appearing locally. I wouldn't be surprised if Ponderer, Donna and HtS have seen campaign ads in Arizona and Pennsylvania respectively.

Kamala Harris just appeared in Wisconsin and will be in Indiana today. Trump will be rallying in North Carolina.

In the last election Biden won 306 electoral college votes and Trump had 232.

Kamala Harris can win the election if she holds most of the states Biden won. This even if she loses Georgia (16 votes) and Arizona (11 votes) and a state(s) equaling no more than nine electoral votes.

For Trump to to get to the magic number of 270 he has to win every state he won in 2020 plus 38 more electoral votes from at least three state; namely Georgia (16), Arizona (11), Wisconsin (10), Michigan (16), Nevada (6) and Pennsylvania (20).

Watch what the campaigns do in those six states and possibly watch North Carolina (15) which Trump won in 2020 and New Hampshire (4) which Biden won.

Kammy has to hold the Blue Wall.

BTW, did you know, even 538 projected the Doddering Old Fool winning by 8.4%? He won by 4.5... a difference of 3.9%.

MAGAs really do despise the Swamp, and lie to pollsters.

    HtS,
I know that 538 suspended their projection for 2024. They are waiting for polls to clarify their forecast.

  4. by HatetheSwamp on July 24, 2024 11:50 am

    Curt,

Are you thinking that MAGAs will be more truthful with pollsters when the Biden Coup dust settles?

  5. by Indy! on July 24, 2024 12:47 pm
Candidates have access to the most reliable private polling. This is beyond the polling that we, the general public, see in media reports.

Don't bet the house on that one. Hillary's internals convinced her she didn't have to campaign in states she needed. Gore skipped two states that would have given him the presidency because he thought they were in the bag. I'm sure there are plenty more examples if it were worth the time.

  6. by Curt_Anderson on July 24, 2024 12:54 pm
    Indy,
I said the candidates' polls were more reliable and more comprehensive than what we see in the news media. I didn't say the candidate polls were perfect. The public polls we could see didn't have her losing in MI or PA.

  7. by Indy! on July 24, 2024 8:55 pm

Right - which means they were the same. If you've ever seen any internal stuff from the parties - believe me, it's the same 6th grade level stuff you see in every corporate headquarters.

  8. by Donna on July 25, 2024 7:27 am

I agree with Indy. I've never seen any evidence that their private polling is any more reliable than the polling the rest of the country sees.

  9. by Curt_Anderson on July 25, 2024 11:49 am
" I've never seen any evidence that their private polling is any more reliable than the polling the rest of the country sees." --Donna

I'll bite. How would you know about the reliability of private polling?

It stands to reason that when millions of dollars are at stake, politicians will hire the very best pollsters and pay for the most detailed polls. Also private polls probably tell politicians which cities and areas they are strong or weak in with granular detail. Public polls just generalize an entire state.

Also when we in the public see polls, they are already at least a couple of days old. See the link for example. These are state polls taken on the 22nd and 23rd. I am sure that private pollsters don't make their clients wait two days before seeing polling results. The campaigns probably also get early preliminary results while the poll is still being conducted.

Incidentally, Harris has a campaign event scheduled in Houston Texas. Nothing in the public polls indicate she has a chance in Texas. Maybe she knows something we don't know. Biden lost Texas to Trump by a 5.6% margin in 2020 (52.1% to 46.5%). Harris might be attempting for force Trump to play defense in Texas.
    realclearpolling.com

  10. by Indy! on July 25, 2024 11:53 am

The reason polls take a couple days from completion to the public is the pollsters use that time to go over the numbers to try and decipher what they mean and create their narratives for the public.

We can flip your other one around, Curt. Prove to us their getting their info earlier and it's somehow better info. You're talking about private internal polling vs Gallup and others who have been doing it for eons.

  11. by Curt_Anderson on July 25, 2024 12:14 pm
    Indy,
First off, explain to us why you didn't get to Kimberly Cheadle.

Second, when is early information not better than information that is already a few days old? That goes for stock market tips, sports betting, marketing campaigns or anything else where it's important to react to changing situations.

  12. by Indy! on July 25, 2024 1:34 pm

First off: No idea what that means. OD seems to think I said something about Cheadle too. Is there a link to this post of mine that I've obviously forgotten about altogether (or - probably - never posted at all)?

Second: When that information has not been deciphered as to it's meaning yet.

  13. by Curt_Anderson on July 25, 2024 2:02 pm
    Indy,
I was joking about your alleged inaction regarding Cheadle. I have no idea why OD holds you responsible.

  14. by Indy! on July 25, 2024 2:05 pm

OD just likes being mad - even if there is nothing to be mad about.

  16. by Curt_Anderson on July 25, 2024 4:58 pm
Because things you pay for are of higher quality than things given away free, Donna. The politicians are not paying private pollsters if their reliability is no better than public polling.

  17. by Indy! on July 25, 2024 5:19 pm

You're the one that said they get it a couple days early - maybe that's what they're paying for. After all... time is moneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey.

If you want a good indication as to how the major party presidential candidates are doing, pay attention to where they are campaigning. —-Me, the first sentence of this thread.

Trump campaigned in a rural area of North Carolina yesterday, again. NC was supposed to be a red state.

  19. by HatetheSwamp on August 22, 2024 9:01 am

Hard to tell with Trump. He goes everyEFFINwhere.

Remember 016? Hillary never bothered to campaign in Wisconsin... because it's blue.

She lost Wisconsin, et.al.! Keehee hoo ha!

  20. by Curt_Anderson on August 22, 2024 9:19 am
    HtS,
Remember 2020? Trump won North Carolina last time. Trump lost the election by more than 70 electoral college votes. That means he needs to win a few state he didn't four years ago plus hold onto what won. If he's in NC he's playing defense.

Coach Walz said last night "we are down by a field goal, but we are on offense marching down the field. Let's go!"

  21. by HatetheSwamp on August 22, 2024 9:43 am

He also said that it's the fourth quarter... and, referring to himself, we have a great team.

  22. by Curt_Anderson on August 22, 2024 9:50 am
Not referring to himself but perhaps including himself although not explicitly. "The team" is more than the two people who appear on the ballots.

  23. by HatetheSwamp on August 22, 2024 9:55 am

At the top of the show today, Clay, or Buck, said, of the speech, "I was embarrassed for him."

  24. by Indy! on August 22, 2024 12:42 pm

I'm betting everyone on Fox was "embarrassed" for the Ds even though the real embarrassment is anyone still supporting the guy who shits his pants.

  25. by Curt_Anderson on August 25, 2024 2:41 pm
Starting this week Trump is campaigning in Wisconsin and Michigan states he must have to reach 270. Harris and Walz are on offense and campaigning in the state of Georgia, a state they do not need, but Trump does. JD Vance has been relegated to campaigning in Kentucky.

Also CNN is reporting that the Trump campaign is launching a new strategy and a stepped up schedule.

    What does that tell you?

    cnn.com

  26. by oldedude on August 25, 2024 3:04 pm
It tells me he's shifting, which is done in every campaign. And he needs to. He needs NOT to mention her name at all (and not be passive-aggressive about it). He needs to say simply. "Here's where we are at with..... I was correcting the same issues last time. We did this for you (jobs, energy, costs of living, safety, security, immigration, etc). We'll do it again. For you! Done.

That's one of the things kammy and KK have been told by her fellow dims. "You need to shift your campaign and do something else." She's not listening. She's had 3+ years to unfuck the border. She's done absolutely ZERO.

She should have ideas about how to start fighting cost of living in a real way. That bullshit she gave out was plain stupid. It's the same thing the Russians tried and it was an epic failure there. It will be here. Unless she wants us to be a completely socialist state (which has never worked in its history). That would make it illegal to have your own company. All businesses would be owned (in real life) by the government. That would mean that indy would not have his own business. He would have to conform to what the government tells him to do. po would be in what's called the "brown market" the same as people selling veggies on the street. Like the one in "hunger games," which is actually a pretty good purposeful representation.

BTW- does she have her platform on her website yet? I find that really interesting. If I were running, I'd have what I stand for on my site. Unless "I'm lying to the American people about what I'm really going to do. peddojoe got away with it, why can't I?"

  27. by Indy! on August 25, 2024 7:17 pm

There are plenty of socialist countries in the world (as if anyone was actually talking about making America socialist 🙄). Typical crybaby GOP crap like... "THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR PENIS GUNS!!!!!!"

  28. by oldedude on August 25, 2024 8:02 pm
    Name them.

  29. by oldedude on August 25, 2024 8:07 pm
So we're looking for a 1st world, socialist country. NOT a welfare state. Africa? really? Any country there you'd call a 1st world country? el Salvadore, Colombia?

I honestly don't think you can define a Socialist economy without, for once, using a reference.

  30. by Indy! on August 25, 2024 8:22 pm

Ummm... Old Dud? There's a link - use it.

  31. by oldedude on August 26, 2024 7:31 am
Nope. This is a geography test. What FIRST WORLD countries are socialist states.
I don't think you know any. So I'm expecting to catch you in yet another lie!

  32. by meagain on August 26, 2024 8:39 am
Could this be another indicator? The GOP is gearing up to deny the election results if they are unfavourable.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/the-courts-could-decide-this-presidential-election-and-both-campaigns-are-gearing-up-for-an-ugly-legal-fight/ar-AA1prn1e?ocid=nl_article_link

  33. by Donna on August 26, 2024 8:48 am

Of course they are because they're sore losers. They're everything that good parents teach their children not to be.

  34. by Indy! on August 26, 2024 9:35 am

Trump has been working on that strategy since 2016. The problem - especially this late in the game - is no legit legal teams want to work for him because he makes a terrible (often self-incriminating) client who has a history of not paying his bills.

  35. by Indy! on August 26, 2024 9:36 am

Oh... and OD? Not going to chase the goal posts as you move them all over the field. You asked for a socialist country - I gave you a list. You lose. Take your loss like a man for once in your life.

  36. by oldedude on August 26, 2024 9:44 am
There are plenty of socialist countries in the world (as if anyone was actually talking about making America socialist 🙄). Typical crybaby GOP crap like... "THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR PENIS GUNS!!!!!!"

So I beat you fair and square. There are NO first world socialist countries in the world. You're counting all the shithole countries you'd support because they're murdering Christians.

AND you still can't define a "socialist country" and what makes that different from us.
    thankyu thankyuverymuch... you said there

  37. by Donna on August 26, 2024 10:07 am

    Who's murdering Christians, od?

  38. by Indy! on August 26, 2024 10:52 am

And where do you see the words "first world" in my original statement? You lost. Again.

You should be getting used to it by now. 😌

  39. by meagain on August 26, 2024 1:10 pm
The Uk has a socialist government, od. Germany has alternated socialist and right-leaning governments for several decades as has France and Scandinavian countries.

Of course, it is all left and right-leaning, in practice. They are not true socialist states any more than the USA is a totally Right leaning

But then again, the USA is not really a First World Country and won't be until it gives up the barbaric customs of a gun culture and a culture that demeans women.

  40. by Indy! on August 26, 2024 3:26 pm

Nobody is even trying to make America socialist. That's just another one of the lies Fox repeats incessantly because they know their low-IQ audience will believe anything if they repeat it enough.

  41. by oldedude on August 26, 2024 4:40 pm
You STILL didn't answer my question. Ergo, I'm just gonna claim that win now. You can't do it, so....

  42. by Indy! on August 26, 2024 8:31 pm

I didn't answer it because it doesn't apply to the conversation. It's the same as you asking me why I don't refer to Obama as "Obummer" or whatever silly name it is you call him.

  43. by oldedude on August 27, 2024 6:39 am
"Obomber" is a term the sheeple gave him because of his use of drones and cruise missiles to take out specific targets instead of using SOF to gather intelligence. The fact you didn't know that isn't surprising considering your lack of "knowledge" of any sort of reality in the real world.

  44. by Indy! on August 27, 2024 11:00 am

I don't keep up on every little bit of military minutia like you, OD because I am not a sadist obsessed with blowing up other human beings. Call me crazy.

  45. by oldedude on August 27, 2024 11:09 am
Actually, for a third grader, you're pretty caught up on your world. The rest of your knowledge sucks, but as far as a narcissistic 8 year old, you're not doing bad. If you're older than that, I pity anyone who has to have contact with you.

  46. by Indy! on August 27, 2024 1:29 pm

Wow. Nice breakdown. But I have a question - what's it feel like at the end of every day when we shut down and you have to go home with your butt still hurting from the ass kicking you took from a "third grader"? 🤔

  47. by oldedude on August 27, 2024 5:59 pm
I don't keep up on every little bit of military minutia like you, OD because I am not a sadist obsessed with blowing up other human beings.
you haven't kept up with anything since about 1954 (before you were born). The fact is that you only know what you've been told. From losers that were too cowardly to serve so they made up stories so you became a coward. And the saga continues.

And if it were your uncles, they didn't think you could handle the truth about what they did... even cooks and admin have their stories. They ALL did their jobs. I don't care what they did. You're way too delicate to be a cook. You would have committed suicide if you had been a medic or a medical technician. You couldn't handle the that. You listened to other cowards. IF you actually have family that served, I recognize them. And I'm sure they think the same of you as I do. You're a coward that ran for no reason.

  48. by Indy! on August 27, 2024 6:15 pm

Ran where? Oh - I see... you mean I ran from all the stupid wars over making Raytheon richer. Yes, that's true. I had an IQ far too high to fall for the military's bullshit about "spreading democracy" while they're taking over oil fields and using dangerous chemicals and weapons on our own troops. Didn't you once claim you caught a touch of Agent Orange while beating off to reading all those Jane magazines, queenie?
