Uvalde school shooting video obtained by Austin American-Statesman showing police response

After this school shooting occurred, I asked my police officer son what he thought of the Uvalde police response. In his typical understatement he tweeted back to me, "Not great".

In the video in the link below the Uvalde cops exhibit an unprofessional timidity and at times appear to saunter aimlessly in the school hallway. One guy pauses to use a hand sanitizer while they can hear the sounds of gun shots. That entire police force should be fired for their disgraceful response.

Curt- this is really bad. As you all know, I usually really try to be on the side of the LEA's. Can't do it here. At all. My view is that "It'll never to us" was huge in this case.

I am surmising that Pete Arredondo instituted some sort of warped dependent culture in which the cops were reliant upon him for instructions before they acted. My wife and I were discussing over dinner tonight that being a cop is job where you need sometimes to act with certain amount of autonomy. One cop apparently witnessed the shooter carrying an AR-15 into the school but waited for instructions from the chief. Similar story with the cops milling about in the hallway while shots were being fired. WTF?!

Arredondo had one job: he was hired to be the chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police department. He wasn't chief of the entire town of Uvalde, just the schools. Uvalde has a population of 16,000. It's unconscionable that Arredondo didn't have quick response plan of action that every cop under him knew.

This is what happens when units are conditioned under a dictatorial leader. It happens both in policing and military. Honestly, this is one reason the Russians were getting their butts kicked by a bunch of rag-tag forces, much like the British in the colonial uprising here. We also saw it in Afghanistan after obama instituted the new ROE. No one could shoot back without a lawyer "approving" the return fire order. And people were charged, some ended up in prison for 20 years protecting themselves.

I think you're correct is the need to act with a certain amount of autonomy. They officer who saw the guy with the AR should have taken the shot, or at least identified themself as Police and acted on the azzhole's response. I for one, could have articulated that to my God in a rightful shoot, much less a jury or the IA dopes. I hope your son has the wherewithal to make decisions like that, and he stays alive to raise his family and grand kids.
