So neither of the MAGA Hats, olde dude and Hate, seem to think there's anything amiss with Trump's notion about how tariffs work. They think he's a brilliant strategist who thinks on a level far above that of all the mere economic experts in the country. To such stupid people, I suppose someone like Trump would look like a genius.

Well let's just take a simple look at Trump's idea of how tariffs work and what it would be like if "China pays the tariffs", shall we...?

China has a gee-gaw that they want to sell to us for $100.00, so they offer it up to a US importer. The importer pays the $100.00 for it and sells it to the wholesale companies who sell it to the stores with the regular markup. Everything is just as it always is.

Meanwhile, China is apparently supposed to pay the 125% tariff to the US government. So, they take that $100.00 they just got from the importer plus have to add another twenty-five bucks to it and give it to the US government, which distributes this amazing windfall to the soon to be wealthy American people.

My question is... why would the Chinese ever do that?

What would be the point of selling us as much as a chop stick if it essentially means giving it away for nothing, plus paying another 25% on top of it for the privilege?

Yet the Orange Genius seems to think, in his boundless pig-ignorance, that they'll have no alternative but to do this. He declares that China is just going to dump all this money on us at their own expense plus more besides all to make nothing while making this country wildly rich. He keeps saying this no matter how many times he is corrected about how tariffs work.

Why are there so many people in this country who can't easily and totally grok the blitheringly incompetent nincompoopery and unbridled insanity of this man? Why are so many Americans, like olde dude and Hate, ravenously swallowing the flaming horseshit that he constantly stuffs down their ever-gullible throats?

Is there lead in everyone's water...?

There have been times when I and other non-MAGAs here brutally attacked Biden (Israel/Palestine policy, refusal to step down), but the two Trump apoligists here never attack Trump other than to say once in a while that they have reservations about this or that policy. There's never a full-throated rebuke. I hear more condemnation of Trump's policies on Fox News.

The theory behind tariffs is to get people to NOT buy China products by making them MORE EXPENSIVE. That's the perfect world scenario - we get Americans to buy more American made products. But even if that happens, Americans still pay more for the product.

    Example...

    American manufacturer makes widgets.
China manufacturer makes the same exact widgets (they stole the idea from American manufacturer)

American manufacturer must hire more expensive American workers.
China uses what is basically slave labor - $1 a day workers.

American manufacturer has to sell widgets for $15 to make a profit.
China manufacturer can sell them for $10 to make a profit - undercutting all American sales.

Trump puts $100% tariff on China widgets

American manufacturer still sells widgets for $15 and makes a profit.
China manufacturer NOW has to sell widgets for $20 to make a profit (100% tariff mark-up).

American manufacturer now has the upper hand on widget sales. But who is paying for the tariff? Either way you look at it - the American consumer.

    BEFORE tariffs...

    American widgets: $15
    Chinese widgets: $10

Americans paid $10 for cheapest widget.

    AFTER tariffs...

    American widgets: $15
    Chinese widgets: $20

Americans now pay $15 for cheapest widget - a 50% mark-up from their previous price.

Either way - Americans pay MORE for products.

The perfect example of this is sugar. We've put tariffs on Brazilian sugar and other countries to keep American sugar manufacturers (read: the Fanjul family) in business. What does that mean to you and me? It means EVERYTHING we buy that has sugar in it (which is almost everything you buy from the supermarket) costs us more than it should. We are subsidizing a billion dollar industry.

Most people don't seem to understand tariffs. They are a hindrance to trade and a drag on economies. Modern prosperity states from the end of mercantilism and the freeing of trade.

Tariffs are useful and fair when they are used to protect certain vital industries or commodities and that is recognised and permitted under WTO rules. The best current example of that is with autos.

Trump put a blanket 100% tariff on autos made in China and Canada stupidly followed suit. Europe put tariffs ranging from 12% ( I think) for Teslas to 35% according to the degree of subsidization by China.

Europe's tariffs were WTO compliant and did what they were supposed to do. Those of America and Canada were not compliant - broke International rules that have served well since 1948 with the GATT agreement that was followed by GATT.

Of course, the USA has ignored the WTO a number of times as it does not accept that rules apply to America. It has been doing so and defying WTO rulings for decades - long before Trump with respect to Canada's Softwood lumber.

There have been times when I and other non-MAGAs here brutally attacked Biden (Israel/Palestine policy, refusal to step down), but the two Trump (sic) apoligists here never attack Trump other than to say once in a while that they have reservations about this or that policy. There's never a full-throated rebuke. I hear more condemnation of Trump's policies on Fox News.

This is much like you supporting Hamas and the murdering of women, children, and infants. There have been times when you and other TPSers here brutally attacked trumpster (Israel/Palestine policy and just plain TPS), but the TPS apologists here never attack the murdering terrorists other than to say once in a while that they have reservations about this or that policy. You continually support them first and foremost. There's never a full-throated rebuke. I hear more condemnation of TPS policies on Rachael Maddow or curt's holy trinity.

  5. by Donna on April 10, 2025 4:11 pm

I don't support Hamas. However, you support the mass murder of tens of thousanda of Palestinian women and children. If Netanyahu massacred every living Palestian, you'd be fine with that.

Si bend over as far as you can bend your broken down old body, wrap your lips around your dick as tightly as you have your lips wrapped around Trump's dick,

  6. by oldedude on April 10, 2025 5:33 pm
Not true at all. You're lying. I actually started a thread of how to handle the Palestinian uprising. You didn't respond to. I support them. Remember, I'm the one radical "Islam" tried to kill my family and I, and did kill several friends of mine. And YOU support them. You keep making excuses for them. I'm a realist. I know how your assholes recruit. They DO recruit children to use to carry their fucking blast vests, something you still maintain as bullshit because all Palestinians are innocent. That shows your complete lack of knowledge in the area.

Pull your head out of your arse for just a second. You're nothing but a wannabe in your own miserable, shallow, hateful and meaningless "life." And I'm not looking to murder people. You have finally come unhinged enough to be a threat to yourself and others. You're the next serial killer because you are so psychotic you actually think your fantasies are real. You need help. Seriously. This isn't the first time you've mentioned that murdering people is a good thing. And you doubled down on murdering innocent people. You really need a 72hour hold and treat. And strapped to the bed for the safety of everyone.

    PALISTI...

He hasn't addressed the topic of this thread once in it. He obviously not only seems to see nothing amiss with Trump's notion about how tariffs work. He clearly demonstrates that he sees nothing amiss or noteworthy about the disastrous, blithering pig-ignorance and nihilistic psychosis of the president of the United States. No big whoop in olde dude's book.

He hasn't addressed the topic of this thread once in it. He obviously not only seems to see nothing amiss with Trump's notion about how tariffs work.

I know that lying is one of the major plays in the libtard "book of tricks," so I'll start with you lying about this. I had some severe reservations regarding Tariffs. And I'm sure you wouldn't remember. Must have been a psychotic episode you were going through at the time, when you switch everything in your brain because none of us can agree with you on anything. I also had severe issues with how DOGE was doing their job. Both of these were far more than 1. you wanting to burn down city property. 2. Walz's wife loving the smell of burning tires. And 3. Your complete love of Hamas and the murdering of the Jews. The one thing I know is that you don't have any capability (along with many others) to check your psychosis somewhere and not believe your fantasies that aren't real. At all.

  9. by HatetheSwamp on April 11, 2025 5:29 am

...you don't have any capability (along with many others) to check your psychosis somewhere and not believe your fantasies that aren't real.

A foundational teaching of ancient Hebrew and Christian writings is, as Saul of Tarsus wrote, "...godly grief produces a repentance that leads to (change of thinking)."

That's po's bottom-line intellectual and psychological stumbling block.

po is self-satisfied and self-righteous. po, not so much lies, as searches for lies to believe, then passes them on. AND, po and Donna hate, as is their case with Jews. Hate, apparently, is their core.

    Tragic.

  10. by oldedude on April 11, 2025 7:34 am
He clearly demonstrates that he sees nothing amiss or noteworthy about the disastrous, blithering pig-ignorance and nihilistic psychosis of the president of the United States.

I'm waiting for YOU to explain it, since your doctorate seems to be in "economics." And I know you won't or can't do that. You only whine like a little bitch. That's the most productive you can get. You never have a productive post or thread😕.

And it's your blithering pig-ignorance and nihilistic psychosis about what is happening.

  11. by HatetheSwamp on April 11, 2025 7:59 am

"I'm waiting for YOU to explain it, since your doctorate seems to be in "economics.""

Baha. Is po an Ivy League law school professor, a fellow at Penn's Wharton Business school, or on the faculty at Johns Hopkins medical school... or all three!!!!!?

    po claims every possible expertise.

  12. by meagain on April 11, 2025 9:55 am
In all the snide comments about Ponderer, I see none that pertains to the topic. Just more of the attempt to excuse Ithe sraeli Genocide in Gaza.

  13. by oldedude on April 11, 2025 6:56 pm
She supports of the genocide of israelis. Period. You can't escape that.

  14. by Ponderer on April 12, 2025 8:22 am

They want to change the subject, meagain. Because defending Trump in this only makes them look stupider.

Back to the topic, here's what I'd love to see happen...

If the Trump Tariffs actually do go into effect and an American importer purchases items from a tariffed country as they normally would, say from China, they should then just go about their business as they always have and sell the product to wholesalers at the normal price. They don't send anything in for the tariff. The country exporting to us never pays the tariff to the importer. The importer adds the tariff amount in to the new price they get from wholesalers, and on down the line to us.

When the Trump "government" then comes back to the importer and demands to know why they didn't get their 144% or whatever tariff from China, the importer just says, "Well... because China didn't give it to me! Go after them for it! You always said they would be paying it. So talk to THEM about it!"

  15. by HatetheSwamp on April 12, 2025 8:32 am

    po,

Are you suggesting US businesses engage in civil disobedience?

  16. by Ponderer on April 13, 2025 7:13 am

See what I mean, meagain? They don't actually address the topic because they know what a treacherously psychotic sociopath Trump is being with this tariff bullshit. All they want to do is obfuscate with tons of non sequitur nonsense and/or distract with stupidly asinine questions intended to change the subject.

  17. by Ponderer on April 13, 2025 7:14 am

It's just their way of supporting, defending, excusing and shilling for Trump.

  18. by HatetheSwamp on April 13, 2025 7:39 am

Actually, po, mine was a serious question.

  19. by meagain on April 13, 2025 1:08 pm
I don't know that Ponderer was suggesting civil disobedience. I do know that Trump is practising civil disobedience. Ignoring the law and the Constitution. However, if Trump continues unchecked by legal authorities, then they should practise civil disobedience if America is to be saved from destruction.

  20. by oldedude on April 13, 2025 1:23 pm
Ignoring the law and the Constitution.
Exactly what laws is he ignoring?

I need the charge, federal statute, and how. Otherwise, you're just blowing hot air. I've also asked this from donna and po. Neither can answer this. Maybe you can.

You are a silly twit, OD. there have been a dozen or more posts about the unconstitutionality of his actions. I posted a while ago about tariffs being a power of Congress that he has usurped and Curt just spelled it out. Chapter and verse so the dim bulb inside your head might light up and let you absorb facts.

You are a silly twit, OD. there have been a dozen or more posts about the unconstitutionality of his actions. I posted a while ago about tariffs being a power of Congress that he has usurped and Curt just spelled it out.

    Delegation of Congressional Authority
The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power to set tariffs. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states that Congress has the power to “lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises,” and to regulate commerce with foreign countries. For most of the country’s history, Congress set tariff rates through legislative revisions to the U.S. tariff schedule. However, beginning in the 1930s, Congress began delegating considerable portions of its tariff authority to the president, subject to certain conditions and restrictions.

Key Statutes Purportedly Giving the President Authority to Impose Across-the-Board Tariffs
There are many different statutes under which the president can impose tariffs. The following statutes are the most cited sources of authority for a president authority to impose across-the-board tariffs on all imports coming into the U.S.

wrongagain. You are right now at 0%. Try and improve your game. This is just getting too EFFEEEEENNNNN easy.

And quite frankly, po. Yet again, your asking one of those "do you still beat your wife" questions. I'm just going with the flow. Of course, that includes proving you have a "very colorful" imagination and lots of fantasies.

  24. by meagain on April 14, 2025 7:51 am
Posting those is of no consequence, OD, if you can't think deeply enough to understand them. Congress has not delegated the powers and the President can only impose tariffs without that delegation in an acute emergency that must be examined after imposition to check whether they were justified.

  25. by oldedude on April 14, 2025 8:27 am
Wrongagain- So we also should have arrested pedojoe. And obomber. And cliton. etc. You're just fucking wrong. And won't/ can't admit it. I gave you the citation. End of story.

  26. by Ponderer on April 14, 2025 8:44 am

meagain, don't be angry with olde dude. He doesn't know any better. As a devout Trump supporter and conservative in good standing, he is incapable of understanding the very concept of an "equitable comparison". He doesn't know what one is, so he is abysmally incapable of making anything but the most laughable excuses for one. He's not able to comprehend how ludicrous he is being.

He erroneously believes that Obama and Clinton violated the constitution somehow while no Republicans in Congress did a damned thing about it, even when they had the full power to.

And he completely and absolutely ignores the heinous atrocities against the Constitution of the United States perpetrated against the rule of law that Trump and the Trump Party commit on a near daily basis.

olde dude is a moron. It's not his fault that he was born this way. It's just unfortunate how such moronic and stupid people like him, and Hate, can disrupt and even destroy this country when enough of them are controlled by a treasonous megalomaniac.

  27. by HatetheSwamp on April 14, 2025 8:51 am

"meagain, don't be angry with olde dude. He doesn't know any better. As a devout Trump supporter..."

    po,

Why do you have to lie... and, precisely, in the way the KKK and Nazis lie!!!!!?
