The amendment, which required a two-thirds vote, passed along party lines with 140 votes for and 21 against. It was proposed by the ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition led by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The amendment codifies a law fast-tracked through parliament in March that bans public events held by LGBTQ+ communities, including the popular Pride event in Budapest that draws thousands annually.

Hungary’s government has campaigned against LGBTQ+ communities in recent years, and argues its “child protection” policies, which forbid the availability to minors of any material that mentions homosexuality, are needed to protect children from what it calls “woke ideology" and “gender madness.”

The new amendment also states that the constitution recognizes two sexes, male and female, an expansion of an earlier amendment that prohibits same-sex adoption by stating that a mother is a woman and a father is a man.

The declaration provides a constitutional basis for denying the gender identities of transgender people, as well as ignoring the existence of intersex individuals who are born with sexual characteristics that do not align with binary conceptions of male and female.

In a statement on Monday, government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács wrote that the change is “not an attack on individual self-expression, but a clarification that legal norms are based on biological reality.”

I think it's Donna who's big on claiming that trans rights are acknowledged across the world, apart from the will of fascistic and disgusting Christian theocrat mommies and daddies in the US.

But, it seems to ole pb that, internationally, woke hegemony is dying a slow death.

I am very skeptical about gender ideology. It is based largely on pseudo-science and Orwellian doublespeak. However, the best way to push back is through an open dialogue in a democratic system based on the rule of law. We should all be wary of allowing an autocrat to impose morality on us.

So, I appeal to all rational, reasonable, moderates and liberals. There's a lot of crazy stuff that people on the far left flank are pushing for. I realize we all want to be nice, and there's a temptation to say, "Gee what's the harm in letting people use whatever restroom they want or play on whatever team they like." But when 80 percent of Americans oppose allowing men to play in women's sports, this stuff will lose us elections. Kamala is for they/them,
Trump is for you. After one or two more elections like 2024, we may look a lot like Hungary, where an autocrat will lead us to a very dark place that will take generations to escape from.

Remember the book "What's the Matter with Kansas"? People are voting based on culture, even if it's against their own financial self-interest. Even if you're not a low-information voter, it can be hard to understand the details and nuances of complicated policy matters. It's a lot easier to look on your social media feed and vote against the people saying crazy things.

Democrats have got to stake out positions that make sense to most people. We're the only party that is still majority sane. We have to win elections. There's too much at stake.

The Democrats are dead, Robert. Go on twitter and talk to people aged 18-35. They have zero interest in voting Democrat and changing the "message" (the ONLY thing the Ds care about) is not going to change their minds. We have two choices...

    1) The Acceleration Theory (which is very much already in play with Trump and Leon)

    2) A new, viable third party that does not take any corporate money at all and only creates policy to help average Americans.

Take your pick OR continue dealing with presidents like Trump and Bush 43.

Let me guess, you believe in unicorns, too.

On Planet Earth, that's never going to happen. The last new, viable third party that won power were the Republicans, and in less than one election cycle they became the champions of corporate America.

I suspect it might be easier for Democrats to figure out a way to get 18-35 year-olds to vote. A recession may be a good way to motivate people. So might a solar flare that wipes out telecommunications and social media. A very slim possibility, but still more likely than a Ralph Nader riding a unicorn to the White House.

And, yes, people on the fringes always dream about heightening the contradictions, but that's a thought experiment that rarely produces positive outcomes.

Yeah, I agree, we're probably fucked. I'd rather push back with methods that actually work on occasion.

  4. by Indy! on April 15, 2025 8:07 pm

Voting Democrat does not work. And yeah, it's fun to make unicorn jokes, but the reality is "progressives" have been REgressing for 40 years voting for the same type of corporate criminals the GOP elects. So keep making fun of the idea. The only other option is the Acceleration Theory - what we are experiencing now (on a very small scale) with Trump. It's only going to get worse.

So far as getting the young on board? David Hogg said something very telling on some show I was watching. When he was at the Democrat victory party (fail) for Kamala Harris (I believe that's what the occasion was), he looked around the room and he was the only guy under 35 in the entire place. The Ds are dead, my friend. They have been for quite awhile. That's what happens when Obama doesn't do what he promised, and the party didn't do an autopsy after Hillary's spectacular loss and how the even more spectacular second loss to Trump has not changed a single thing on the Democrat side. They're done. It's over. Sooooo... unicorns? That's what you're going to need to win the next general.

Oh, and just so we're clear - I did not vote for Nader. 😉
