WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a move political analysts say was an olive branch to the LGBTQ community, President Donald Trump hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House.
"I love baseball teams — even the ones that are very gay," Trump said in remarks to the press during the Dodgers' visit. "It really was something to see the first openly gay Major League Baseball team win the World Series, wasn't it, folks? Never thought it would happen. It takes strong wrists to swing a baseball bat. I didn't think the Dodgers could do it. And now the best team in baseball is gay. The gayest team of all time, some people are saying. I don't know. The Giants are still up there. A lot of gay in San Francisco."
The Dodgers agreed that the invitation was a move in the right direction for greater acceptance of the team's lifestyle. "We just want to be treated like everyone else," said Manager Dave Roberts. "It's not easy being the public face of the LGBTQ community. Between us and the Dallas Cowboys, it's easy to feel like a small minority in pro sports. After this, maybe other really gay sports organizations will feel more welcome in Trump's America."
