A New York Times obituary is an honor he would have liked.
I don't want to overstate our friendship but we have been friendly acquaintances for 50 years. I met his parents, know his wife and his daughter who was a classmate and friend of my daughter. I first met him when I tended a bar next door to the Shakespeare theatres. Later we'd have breakfasts together with our then-infant daughters.
When my daughter was in middle school, she said to him, "I heard you are in a soap opera". In mock seriousness I said, "Tara, please, it's daytime television drama! Denis had a good laugh over that.
