And the path to getting it.
I did a little thinking about the travelling along that path by various administrations. Just so that you can keep informed of the progress and how far there is yet to go.
1. 1775 -An army led by Generals Montgomery and Arnold attacked and burned Montreal. Then Quebec where it was defeated, Montgomery was killed; the army scurried back home.
2. 1812. Jeffesrson has=d said, "Taking Canada was just a matter of marching. After three years of war and the burning down od the Whitehose, what remained of the American armyy went home to nurse its wounds.
3. 1838. "The Patrioot's War." A force invaded Ontario. It was decimated: its leader captured and hanged.
4. 1846. The US wanted to move the border north to "54.40 or fight" as its jingoistic slogan went, and to annex British Columbia. They thought better of that one, with recent setbacks still stinging and went to war with Mexico instead.
5. 1882. The "Trent affair." Britain sent an army to Canada to support the militias, and Lincoln wisely said, "We can only fight one war at a time."
6. 1866 and again in 1870, the Fenians got a bloody nose each time and went home to Mommy.
7. 1890. McKinley thought he could do it with tariffs that in the event, hurt the USA more than Canada and hardly merited a historical mention.
Since then, it was well known here that the American War Department harboured designs right up to the Second World War. Fortunately for America, no administrations felt inclined to follow through. Since then, one of the strongest nation-to-nation relationships in history has developed.
Trump wants to try again and destroy that relationship.
His nose is going to be bloodied and America will sacrifice all its hard won moral standing.
