NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's administration said it had canceled grants and contracts totaling $400 million to Columbia University because of what it described as antisemitic harassment on and near the school's New York City campus.
Friday's announcement was made in a joint statement, opens new tab by the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the General Services Administration.

The announced cuts were likely to face legal challenges, with civil rights groups saying they lacked due process and could be an unconstitutional punishment for protected speech.

Columbia has been at the center of a pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel student protest movement that swept across campuses over the last year.

"Cancelling these taxpayer funds is our strongest signal yet that the Federal Government is not going to be party to an educational institution like Columbia that does not protect Jewish students and staff," Leo Terrell, who leads the Justice Department's antisemitism task force, said in a statement.

In December, a chilling Instagram post included an illustration of the Barnard campus’ famous statue of Greek goddess Athena lobbing a Molotov cocktail at the Milstein Center — the school’s academic hub and the very same building where the bomb threat was made. “Barnard first, Columbia next,” the text accompanying the Instagram post read in part. Columbia confirmed that students were removed from campus and arrested this week as part of this week's disruption at Barnard College. Many of those protesting were not students of the elite women’s college but joined in the melee from nearby Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary. During the protest, nine agitators were arrested by police. Many of the protestors were not from Banard College, which is all women's school. "These students have been suspended and restricted from campus as we swiftly work through the discipline process," Columbia University said in a statement.
