Republican senators told tech billionaire Elon Musk at a closed-door meeting Wednesday that his aggressive moves to shrink the federal government will need a vote on Capitol Hill, sending a clear message that he needs to respect Congress’s power of the purse.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who largely supports Musk’s mission, told him DOGE’s efforts to cut spending and reduce the federal workforce reductions won’t pass muster with the courts unless Congress codifies them by passing a spending rescission* package.

“Then, what we have to do is get to 51 senators or 50 senators” to vote “to cut the spending,” he added. “We talked a lot about, how do we make these things permanent? Rescission was a big part of the discussion.”

David French is a columnist at The New York Times and a fiscal conservative.
Jessica Riedl is a fellow at the Manhattan Institute and an expert about the federal budget and about America’s fiscal realities.

French: So, what is your best estimate about the DOGE savings right now?

Riedl: Perhaps $2 billion, which they claim is $55 billion. Even that $2 billion may not ultimately happen because technically speaking, DOGE cannot impound and unilaterally reduce federal spending. Any spending cuts legally have to be reprogrammed elsewhere unless Congress goes in and reduces the spending levels. So right now I would say DOGE has saved $2 billion, which, to put it in context, is one-thirty-fifth of 1 percent of the federal budget, otherwise known as budget dust.

And? This is something everyone knows and understands. On every vote it's not a given. Welcome to politics. For Paul, your earlier post was a help. The fact they are looking over things is a very positive thing for him. Like him or not, he's careful about money and spending. There are several others that are looking at what they're doing also. I don't see what the issue is.

Isn't THIS how the government is SUPPOSED TO WORK?

Instead of spending without any transparency? Or lying to the courts about how criminal lawfare is being done? Don't both of those represent the dictatorship from the last administration?

The issue is that Musk and his DOGEites have made hyperbolic claims about massive amounts of money being saved as they wield an axe to departments as if they are the final word.

As it happens some of these DOGE cuts have negatively impacted various groups including farmers in red states. Republican members of Congress have been getting an earful from their constituents at townhalls and elsewhere.

So when it comes down to approving the individual DOGE administered cuts, some members of Congress may not want to cross their own constituents by cutting or curtailing the popular programs that DOGE targets.

You're really, really new at politics, aren't you?

This is required by the constitution. Anyone that has actually taken a junior high social studies class would know that. That's why I'm a tad shocked at the thread. They're already preparing for the interviews and votes in the house. It has to go through committee, then through the house (because they do money). Then it'll go through the senate committee, and then through senate per se. That's actually the long and short of it.

So after all that, the one-thirty-fifth of 1 percent of the federal budget that DOGE is taking credit for eliminating, it will be whittled down into an even tinier amount.

    Good to know.

As of now, yes. Don't forget about the $18MIL/month going to that program that was shut down that's been going on for over a year.

I think it really odd how you support your government wasteful spending, yet you want to get in someone's personal religion? That just makes no sense to me. Do you care about how your local money is spent?

AND they haven't even hit DOD yet and some of the others. Let's see, I mentioned earlier that trumpster had been in what, a couple of months now? Have you ever tried to get a passport? Sorry. Of course not. You wouldn't want to travel anywhere else. Anyway, figure on 4 months IF your application is cleared. So if you don't smoke weed, and you haven't been arrested, and you're not charged with beating your wife, and you pass the background in to you not being someone who wants to overthrow the government, or support pedos, MAYBE you'll get one in four months.

So just cool your fucking jets on this. It's still more legal stuff pedojoe did in four years. Of course he was busy with all the other corruption, graft, bribery, and other stuff he was into (he was done showering with his daughter by then. She was too old).

    Curt,

Your love for expanding our more than $36,000,000,000,000 fascinates me. You're a hoot!

"That feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap" is gone so You're good Germaning Swamp dysfunction and corruption? Youdaman!

Tell me how firing huge numbers of the people who work to get you your passport helps this. The delay suggests that more staff is needed, not less.

If Musk and Trump had more than half a brain between them, they would investigate government departments to discover what is the source of inefficiencies and then remedy that.
