Trump campaigned on tariffs being a “beautiful word” and an economic winner that will create US jobs, lower prices and help balance the budget. If that is true that tariffs are a panacea, why is Lutnick signaling that Trump is backpedaling on tariffs? Reportedly, Trump said he had “friendly” phone call with Justin Trudeau this morning.

Trump Weighs Tariff Deal With Canada, Mexico, Lutnick: Trump Mulling Mexico, Canada Tariff Compromise
The Trump administration could announce a pathway for tariff relief on Mexican and Canadian goods covered by North America’s free trade agreement as soon as Wednesday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said.

“Both the Mexicans and the Canadians were on the phone with me all day today trying to show that they’ll do better, and the president’s listening, because you know he’s very, very fair and very reasonable,” Lutnick said Tuesday in an interview with Fox Business.

The White House granted a one-month delay for tariffs on automakers whose cars comply with USMCA, which was negotiated during President Donald Trump's first term.

As I said, if tariffs are so great, why would any business need an “exemption”?

  3. by HatetheSwamp on March 5, 2025 2:59 pm

    Curt,

What you're going to have to do is find someone who thinks that tariffs are great
    to get your answer?

"What you're going to have to do is find someone who thinks that tariffs are great to get your answer" --HtS

You mean like these two guys? So if tariffs create opportunities for domestic businesses and bring back manufacturing to America, why is Trump pausing tariffs for automakers?

"IF you're trying to bring back manufacturing into the US, then you make Chinese goods more expensive, which puts the US products easier to buy for Americans." #9 see link

People are not looking at the tariffs in the other countries. They're only looking at one side or the equation.

If you include energy, we're getting screwed by the Canadians.

  6. by Curt_Anderson on March 5, 2025 5:34 pm
    OD,
How were we getting screwed by Canada on oil and energy?

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) eliminated tariffs on most energy products between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This included crude oil, gasoline, and refined products. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) replaced the very similar NAFTA in 2020 by Trump.

USMCA supports energy trade between the three countries by eliminating tariffs on oil and other energy products.

That is not an escalation, it is tit for tat. Who initiated the trade war with 25% tariffs on our neighbors? Trump. It was totally predictable that this would happen. In fact you, others and I discussed retaliatory tariffs last September.

    More Trump blinking...

White House reportedly considering some agricultural exemptions from tariffs on Mexico, Canada: Bloomberg News
The Trump administration is thinking of carving out certain agricultural products from tariffs imposed on Mexico and Canada, Bloomberg News reports.

“Everything is on the table,” Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told Bloomberg News. She said that specific exemptions and carveouts “perhaps for potash and fertilizer, et cetera – to be determined,” Bloomberg reported.

You should think about your post, OD. The Canadian government has targeted a number of imports with the object of hitting here it hurts, not a blanket tariff on everything as Trump's is. It's like a boxer facing a thug whose style is wild haymakers. It also is mostly aimed to hit Red States.

Also, the USa is so screwed on energy that it has to settle for a 20% discount from world prices for the 5.5 billion barrels a day of oil it gets (4 billion for your domestic use and 1.5 billion that you sell on at a profit.

You are screwed on the electricity by getting at cheaper prices than you could not possibly equal if you created your own substitutes. It is mostly hydropower, which is a fraction of the cost of the nuclear power you would need to replace it.

    More Trump blinking…
Tariff reversal: President Trump wrote on social media that he was suspending tariffs on most imports from Mexico until April 2. Mr. Trump announced the exemption, on goods covered by a trade pact he signed in his first term, after a call with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. The reversal came just two days after he imposed tariffs of 25 percent on goods coming into the United States from Mexico and Canada, sparking a trade fight with two of the country’s closest economic partners.

Even Trump’s most gullible supporters should understand by now that tariffs are not the great thing that Trump promised.

  12. by HatetheSwamp on March 6, 2025 9:41 am

It'd be fun, Curt, if you could lure tuk22 back to ask him what he thinks about tariffs.

He's the closest thing we might have to a "gullible" Trump supporter.

Other than that, you got, as po'd say, nothin... h€ck, EFFINnuthin.

    HtS,
See comment #4 above. We have our gullible Trump voters here already.

curt- to answer your question. Trump placed tariffs on USMCA products. For Mexico, because they've shown they are actually working on the issues that trumpster placed on the new tariffs. he took out certain tariffs that he placed on them.

“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement,” Trump wrote, referring to the United States-Mexico-Canada free-trade agreement that he signed during his first term in office.

“I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum,” Trump wrote. “Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!”

Canada? As of 2 hours ago (1:30 EST), nothing was said about Canada although it's being "looked at." I don't think that's a "blink." I think he got what he wanted. Kind of like he did with Ukraine...

    OD,
While campaigning Trump declared “tariff” to be his “favorite word” and “the most beautiful word in the dictionary.” He regularly said he would use tariffs to raise federal revenue and increase jobs and manufacturing in the United States.

So what gives now? Doesn't Trump want to raise federal revenue and increase jobs and manufacturing in the United States?

  16. by HatetheSwamp on March 6, 2025 10:53 am

    Curt,

Clearly, Trump has your head spinning. I don't even want to try to imagine the state of your mind by January 029. Were I to offer you advice it'd be to go off to a quiet place and spend an afternoon meditating on what's now Selena Zito's ancient wisdom:

Trump supporters take Trump seriously but not literally, progressives take him literally but not seriously.

It's po's schtick to claim that people who disagree with po are stoopid. But, I'm beginning to think that it's only MAGAs and the unwoke who are smart enuff to grasp Trump.

  17. by Curt_Anderson on March 6, 2025 11:15 am
    HtS,
You are kidding yourself if you don’t think people voted for Trump because they believed tariffs would literally be some sort of magical solution to all economic ills. Or that Trump voters took his promises and claims literally.

For example, you and HtS haven’t even questioned any of Trump’s preposterous claims in his speech this week. I believe you or OD said it was “inspiring”.

  18. by HatetheSwamp on March 6, 2025 11:51 am

    Cite the preposterous claims.

Ole pb thought that on the level of the performance, Trump was brilliant. The speech itself didn't impress pb.

But, for pb 90% of the story of the evening was the buffoonish behavior of the congressional Ds.

But, by all means let's discuss the content of the speech. Start a thread.

Ontario has just imposed a 25% tax on electricity. It affects only a bit more than a million Americans but three States. New York, Michigan and Wisconsin. IMO it was a stupid move and but our Premier is a fool and was a Trump supporter until this.

I have emailed him saying that he should butt out snd attend to Ontario's business instead of playing Captain Canada. It's federal business to decide what should be done.

  20. by oldedude on March 6, 2025 12:40 pm
So what gives now? Doesn't Trump want to raise federal revenue and increase jobs and manufacturing in the United States?

First, it wasn't a fight. I was simply just trying to answer a question you had, and I didn't have the answer right then.

For the rest of it. trumpster wanted the countries to do something. He warned them, they told him to piss off. He warned them again. They did the same thing. He put limited tariffs on two of the three countries. They're falling into compliance. End of story. You don't have to go out to left field on this one.

  21. by meagain on March 6, 2025 3:10 pm
I doubt I have ever come across such a bonehead as you.

" He put limited tariffs on two of the three countries. They're falling into compliance."

Falling into compliance? Canada is going ahead with the full range of tariffs it promised in spite of Trump's delay of them. And all the Provinces are taking actions that are within their jurisdictional power. Non-tariff actions that are already hurting America.

  22. by oldedude on March 6, 2025 9:04 pm
Trumpster didn't delay canada's. Little justin hasn't done much to correct his end of the issue. So his isn't going away. mexico on the other hand has done substantial work on the border, and he's relaxing that until April.

  23. by oldedude on March 6, 2025 9:07 pm
Sorry, 38 minutes ago that changed...

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday postponed 25% tariffs on many imports from Mexico and some imports from Canada for a month amid widespread fears of the economic fallout from a broader trade war.
