I have edited Carville's op-ed into a shorter Cliff Notes version. If you have an NY Times subscription, read his entire piece at the link below. To be even more succinct, Carville recommends allowing Republicans to have enough rope to hang themselves.

The Republican Party is all too often effective at campaigning and winning elections, but there’s another fact about it that a lot of Americans forget: The Republican Party flat out sucks at governing.

[Instead] of prioritizing the problems he campaigned on — public safety, immigration and the border and, most of all, the economy — President Trump is hellbent on dismantling the federal government. To accomplish this, he has put his faith in the most incompetent cabinet in modern history...Which will result in one clear thing: disorder. There will probably be more enormous tax cuts for the wealthy and Medicaid cuts hitting a lot of other people, but there is nothing the American public despises more than disorder and a broken economy.

And there’s nothing Democrats can legitimately do to stop it, even if we wanted to.

With no clear leader to voice our opposition and no control in any branch of government, it’s time for Democrats to embark on the most daring political maneuver in the history of our party: roll over and play dead. Allow the Republicans to crumble beneath their own weight and make the American people miss us...I’m calling for a strategic political retreat.

Instead of gearing up to fight them — as we love to do — the most radical thing we can do is nothing at all. Let the Republicans disagree with themselves publicly. Do not offer a single vote. Do not insert yourself into the discourse. Do not throw a monkey wrench into the equation. Simply step away and let ’em flirt with a default. Just when they’ve pushed themselves to the brink and it appears they could collapse the global economy, come in and save the day. Be the competent party and not the chaos party. House Democrats know this.

The people did not vote for the Department of Education to be obliterated; they voted for lower prices for eggs and milk. Democrats, let the Republicans’ own undertow drag them away.

At this rate, the Trump honeymoon will be over, best case, by Memorial Day but more likely in the next 30 days. And in November 2025, we start turning the tide with what will be remembered as one of the most important elections in recent years: the Virginia governor’s race. From tax enforcers to rocket scientists, bank regulators and essential workers — the Trump administration is hellbent on drastically firing the federal work force, despite the fact that federal civilian employees account for just 3 percent of the federal budget. These workers are highly concentrated in Virginia, home to around 144,000 civilian federal employees.

I saw the interview where he said that the best thing to do is play possum. He also predicted that the Trump regime would collapse in 30 days. I'd love for that to be true, but I wouldn't predict that.

If he said it, he's walking back from predicting the Trump regime will collapse in a month. He's now saying Trump's poll numbers will collapse in thirty days---Memorial Day at the latest.

He said that the Trump regime would collapse in 30 days, not his polling #s.

Trump's avg approval rating is down a full point since the last time I checked, which was yesterday or the day before. It's at +0.8 and it's fallen 9 points since Feb 1.

He also entered his term with the lowest approval rating for a president since they've been tracking them.

    Donna,
In that video, Carville (who appears to be in a prone position) says "this administration, in less than 30 days ---in the midst of massive collapse, particularly a collapse in public opinion".

But no one is listening. We've been saying this for the past month. Nobody cares. Go die on your mountain.

That's been pb's take for years. He's posted that here for years.

However, the House just passed that "Big Beautiful Bill." They haven't done anything like that, that I can remember, in my lifetime.

Apparently, Trump figured out the Swamp while that "dithering and diminished" "feckless dementia-ridden" was napping through his four years.

I wonder how many HouseGOPs Elon threatened to primary?

Ole pb predicts that Trump's polls won't collapse. They'll probably eventually settle in 3 to 4 points under water.

    Donna,

Sadly, 538 sucks since Nate Silver left. RCP was more accurate in the 024 election.

Curt, Carville's given more than one interview where he's quipped about the Trump regime collapsing. I think I saw the 1st interview where he said that, and as I remember, he didn't qualify it. I was left wondering what he meant by "collapse".

His approval rating is already collapsing. He's lost 9 pts since Feb 1st. That will continue. Most Americans, good, caring people, are taking umbrage at the regime diverting hundreds of billions of $ from Medicaid to the pockets of billionaires. Apparently, there isn't one caring American in the MAGA House.

"His approval rating is already collapsing." Bahahahahahahahahahaha.

That will change as more and more Americans are personally affected by the cuts.

  13. by HatetheSwamp on February 26, 2025 7:35 am

    Donna,

I imagine that you are correct. Still, the number of people impacted directly will be small.

Trump's genius, so far, is that he's focusing on issues favored by 60 or 70 or 80% of the populace.

And, in time, the decrease in the budget deficit will necessarily result in lower interest rates making mortgages and ar loans cheaper... certainly by the 026 election.

Well if there is one thing the Ds excel at - it's rolling over and playing dead. I'm sure the regulars will remember I've said many times the Ds love NOT being in charge because then they can just sit back and whine about whoever is in the WH. And I'm sure you also remember I've said many times how funny it is that the Rs manage to get whatever they want when they ARE in charge and when they AREN'T in charge while the only thing the Ds manage to accompish when THEY are in charge is giving the Rs whatever THEY want.

    Funny how that works, no?

Again... third party is the ONLY answer. One that actually answers to the People.

  15. by HatetheSwamp on February 26, 2025 9:09 am

What happens in our history is that a party loses its fizz and a new party forms from its asked. A Bernie-ish party of the people would fit the bill.
