Trump signs order shifting US back toward plastic straws
The order, which takes effect immediately, reverses a measure signed by former President Joe Biden, who had called plastic pollution a "crisis".
Trump's directive orders government agencies to stop buying paper straws and calls for a strategy to eliminate them nationwide.
"These things don't work, I've had them many times, and on occasion, they break, they explode. If something's hot, they don't last very long, like a matter of minutes, sometimes a matter of seconds. It's a ridiculous situation," Trump said.
A number of [woke] US cities and states - including Seattle, Washington; California; Oregon; and New Jersey - have adopted rules that limit the use of plastic straws or require that businesses provide them only after being asked by customers.
Some studies have shown that paper straws, however, contain significant amounts of "forever chemicals" such as polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.
PFAS can stay in the environment for decades, contaminate water supplies and cause a variety of health issues.
Just a note of commentary from ole pb: pb rarely uses a straw even in a restaurant. Ole pb loves the planet.

It seems silly to zero in on plastic straws of all things. Granted, humanity has a huge microplastics problem. Every person has it in their bodies in large quantities. I wonder if that's the reason so many people are suffering from various forms of autoimmune disease. It seems to me that other sources of plastic waste are a bigger problem than straws, though.
My company sells plastic and paper straws. The paper straws we sell are of much better quality than the ones we used back in the day. They're multi-ply and they don't collapse or disintegrate when you use them. Most people buy the plastic ones, though.

Zero in?
Oh, maybe you haven't heard about the USAID flap? Trans athletes? The border? DEI? Religious freedom?
C'mon. Gimme a break, man!

Interestingly, Evie and I just chatted about this. Apparently, one of the great dangers of microplastics is an increased likelihood of dementia. Think the Doddering Old Fool.
Anyway, we just decided that, at our age, it's probably too late to care.

If you had children, or empathy, you'd care about the toxic environment you and the rest of us old folks are leaving them.
And btw, I was chastising the campaign against plastic straws by environmentalists. Although it would be better if they weren't used at all, there are much more pervasive uses of plastic than straws. I thought that that was clear by the context.
by meagain on February 11, 2025 7:44 am HtSposts a vivid proof of his ignorance again. Plastic straws are a serious issue as a contributor to the massive build-up of plastic in the ocean: large islands of it. They are also not biodegradable so it never goes away: just keeps increasing the dangers.
It is also a major cause of the CO2 emissions problem. Calculations are that the annual usage of plastic straws produces emissions equalling those of19 million cars in the USA alone.
Those apar fro the health hazards Donna mentioned. They are banned in many more enlightened countries like Canada.
by oldedude on February 11, 2025 8:51 am It's more about the plastic bags and can holders (the opaque pull off kind) that most people are too lazy to cut up and recycle, mostly from Central America, Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. The new can carriers are much more efficient (see Citation), but there not in general use yet. uline.com

Donna, meagain,...
I was clear, I don't use plastic straws. But, if you continue to believe that Big Brother is your answer, y'nes'll continue to lose,... badly!
Trump’s forcing no one to use plastic straws, eh?

olde dude, Uline ROCKS! I get my packaging and other parts from them for my Hummy Wands.
I've sold 289 of them to date. This last December was way down from the previous December. Mostly I think thanks to the Chinese pirates that are selling crappy knockoffs of my design for way cheaper. Assholes even use my text and images from my Etsy ad.

Straws are for lazy people. You can't lift the glass to your mouth to take a sip? 🙄 That said, the Homeless Hairdo bringing this... ahem... "issue" up so early in his (already disastrous) second term tells me he's not even in charge. It's all Leon.
The answer to getting rid of straws would be a campaign to shame restaurants into stop offering them. I highly doubt anyone would stop coming to your restaurant if you didn't have straws. Or use the metal straws that are available now..
I was interested in what OD said - wasn't familiar with the term so I looked into it. Sounds like just more plastic to me...
The Cons of Utilizing HDPE:
It is high flammability, sensitivity to stress cracking, inability to be biodegradable, inability to be composted, lack of resistance to oxidizing acids, lack of resistance to chlorinated hydrocarbons, and its high thermal expansion.
by Indy! on February 11, 2025 9:13 am Uline - btw - is a big waste product polluter. They've been sending me their phonebook-sized catalog for years even though I've never ordered a single thing from them.
