He also pointed to what the mission deemed to be "problematic" inadequacies in regulating campaign financing, particularly as they relate to political action committees (PACs) and super PACs.
The issue is that politicians receiving the money, are expected to change the law,, thus screwing themselves. And I agree, it's an issue. The other issue the campaign laws need to be thrown out and rewritten. They actually have lawyers that specialize in campaign financing because it's so difficult and problematic to work with. So yes, voters on both sides of the isle are concerned and that's where it stops.
Another "regular issue" observed by the mission was mass disenfranchisement concerning those living in U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico,
The Puerto Ricans themselves are split on if they want to remain a territory or separate.
"Simply the fact that a very large number of people, almost one-third of the electorate, lost trust in the entire electoral process, is a really, really dark, worrying, warning sign," Meszerics said.
I can agree with that. The electorate has watched the lawfare happen here. The illegal use of warrants, wire taps, and the FISA/FISC. The present administration has been caught lying to the courts via the "Department of "Justice" and the FBI. So there's that. I'm not disagreeing with you.
Meszerics hailed the steps taken by U.S. authorities in response to what he said were active threats to the process, including physical security measures and efforts to counter disinformation. Yet the actual language from the campaigns presented a problem.
Security measures. There has been "talk" about a "Federal ID card" which Americans are deathly afraid of. This is thought of along the lines of putting chips in everyone. Are there issues? Yes. Two states can take up to 20 days to report election results. That's just stupid to me. In this age, you can check signatures electronically (what FL, and many other states use), so the technology is out there. Some states are behind on new gen drivers licenses. A couple are two generations behind. The result is their DLs cannot be used to board an aircraft, trains, or other things because they can be counterfeited so easily.
SPEECH: We are caught at this point arguing between "disinformation" and censorship. Neither side can agree on what is what. I agree, it presents problems, but the First Amendment guarantees right of free speech, especially in political matters. Obviously, you can't yell fire in a theater, but that's different than talking freely about politics.
I also found it very interesting they didn't call out the dims calling half the country Nazis, fascists, etc. I would have thought that as a citizen of Hungary, and the plight of the "Arrow Cross Party, and the Nazi Alliances, Meszerics would have been far more sensitive about both of those.
So me. All in all a very Euro view of the US. The items it brought forth are sincerely things most Americans understand exist. Are we working on them? Yes. In most cases. Some are simply how are government is set up. Some are because we disagree on the definitions. Welcome to our Republic
