From The Washington Post:

The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa., as the suspected shooter at former president Donald Trump’s rally. The FBI, which called the attack an assassination attempt, said it was trying to determine his motive and asked the public to come forward with anything they know about Crooks. The shooter was killed. Crooks was a registered Republican, according to the state’s voter status records.

This doesn't sound like a politically motivated assassination attempt. Sounds more like an unbalanced loser who was able to get a gun. More John Hinckley, less John Wilkes Booth.

I'm somewhat relieved, because I figured the shooting would put us on the brink of a second Civil War. Maybe it still will. A lot of people seem to want that.

He also donated to the Progressive Turnout Project through the ActBlue donation platform in January 2021, the month President Joe Biden was inaugurated, according to campaign finance records. I'm with you though. Neither of those are definitive for sure. Still a waiting game.

It appears to be an M4 at about 125 metres, from an oblique, downward angle. Not an impossible sniper's shot, but it would take a bit of practice to do (anyone graduating from any US armed service basic training should be able to make the shot).

I'm changing my mind based on facts. I think there was a failure on the security. It doesn't matter the "probability" of any high point being used. ALL areas of buildings and natural elevated points must be covered. I see that as the major issue of this fiasco. The question is going to be "why" those positions weren't covered.

    And then there's this...
‘OITNB’ Actress Lea DeLaria Calls on Biden to Assassinate Trump: “This Is a War”

DeLaria posted a provocative message in the wake of the Supreme Court's immunity ruling: "Trump is Hitler, and this is 1940. Take him the f*** out."

Orange Is the New Black actress Lea DeLaria uploaded an intense Instagram speech calling on President Joe Biden to take advantage of the Supreme Court’s newly defined executive immunity rules and assassinate Donald Trump.

This isn’t the first time DeLaria has posted something provocative on Instagram regarding Trump that raised eyebrows. After the 2016 election, DeLaria posted that she wanted to “pick up a baseball bat and take out every fucking Republican and Independent I see.”

Back in the 90s, Bill Clinton held a campaign rally at an area in downtown Santa Ana, CA where all the government buildings are. I worked in one of those buildings. Security was so tight that we weren't allowed to stand near windows. The guy who shot Trump was outside and only a little over a football field away - a severe security failure.

  3. by oldedude on July 14, 2024 7:37 am
And it wasn't like it was "Downtown." It's an industrial/ county fair area. So the buildings should have been a no brainier to cover.

I think that the lesson that this episode of our nation's history has taught everyone is: The importance of practice.

  5. by oldedude on July 14, 2024 8:43 am
Or death by cop. Unfortunately, he got gob smacked so to speak. I would have hoped for a spinal shot that he'll never recover from. And we lost all the talking points from what he could tell us by murdering three people.

  6. by Ponderer on July 14, 2024 8:46 am

So who do you think was behind it, od? It's been nearly 24-hours now. You usually have everything figured out in every detail by now.

My money is on the Lincoln Project.

I wonder who trained this asshole. I assume that was the "question" you were asking. It could be anything from the local biden coalition, burnie bros that were going to put conservatives in "re-education" camps, Antifada of America, the Palestinian movement of poor little rich white kids that haven't got anything better to do, Russia, China, Iran, or any of their surrogates in the terrorism world. Asshole lived at mommy and daddy's house, so the financial trail is harder, but I'm sure those subpoenas have already been done. So the choice is pretty much the entire left that think murdering the opposition is a good thing for the US.

You noticed that I specifically asked if you were in PA yesterday. I don't think you're any kind of a shot, but I thought I would ask if you were a hanger-on just to help their cause (read a willful idiot). There are three people on this site, maybe four that wouldn't shock me if they at least knew of the assassination attempt. These are the ones the whined a lot about the poor people of Gaza that "every" life is sacred (except the ones you don't like). They would murder someone and prove we're nothing better than Saudi Arabia, or the Congo.

"I wonder who trained this asshole." --OD

The gun was registered to his father, so presumably his father.

About ten years ago my nephew, who was then a sergeant with a Special Forces unit, asked if I wanted to shoot targets with his AR-15. I said "sure". I had never used one before (or since). He set up some targets about 100 yards away. We were in the prone position. He shot first and hit his target.

I took aim and realized that I had involuntary sway back and forth no matter how still I tried to be. I mentally timed my sway and when I knew the target would be in sight, I fired: bullseye. Our targets were two small toy trucks which we both obliterated, so after one shot apiece, we were done.

Of course my target wasn't moving. But anybody with a modicum of skill could get lucky.

One could make a predictable list of the usual conspiracy theories, or one can say what's most probable, which is that he was a kid with an AK-47 tyoe weapon who acted on his own.

  10. by oldedude on July 14, 2024 10:02 am
It wasn't an AK (which I wouldn't have taken that shot with). It was an M4. US gun. Smaller bullet, also faster. The M4 was legally purchased by asshole's dad. So there's that out of the picture (straw purchase, illegal purchase, etc). He coulda taught himself but not with that gun. If he's a deer hunter, he never would have used that if he wanted to harvest meat from the animal.

  11. by Indy! on July 14, 2024 12:22 pm
What has Indy told you in the past? It's always the "gun experts" who leave their weapons lying around for someone else to find them and shoot up the place. Unfortunately, this time the gun was found by someone who wasn't a very good shot.

  12. by ROB3RT on July 14, 2024 12:40 pm
Reporters at the Washington Post talked to one of the shooter's former high school classmates. This jumped out...

Her sophomore year, (Sarah) D’Angelo recalled, she took honors American history with Crooks. Their final project was about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Their teacher instructed them to determine what they think happened — including how many gunmen there were, and where they hid to fire the fatal shots.

You guys know Hinkley was a CIA experiment, right?

  14. by oldedude on July 14, 2024 4:19 pm
Unfortunately, the guy that grabbed the gun, caught one back. in the forehead.

And I need to revise, it was a 360metre shot. That's considered pretty close range. With a scope and a moving target, it wasn't that bad. Of course you couldn't hit it, but I've got an 8 year old granddaughter that probably could. So you get beat by a little girl.

  15. by Indy! on July 14, 2024 8:45 pm

Getting beat by a female is a bad thing? Cuz I remember you once telling us you got beat in a shooting contest by some girl. Do you really want to use that one?

  16. by oldedude on July 14, 2024 8:50 pm
At least mine went to a sniper course for six months. It was her profession. So it's sort of like when we talk about politics. I've been trained. You're.... well... "not." and it's like you getting beat by my 8 year old granddaughter on politics...

  17. by Indy! on July 14, 2024 8:56 pm

I've honestly only shot guns once or twice and I beat everyone who was with me both times. I know you think pulling a trigger is the equivalent of brain surgery, but I have no doubt I could beat you with any weapon you choose - especially politics.

  18. by oldedude on July 14, 2024 9:01 pm
Curt- You can tell he's a good instructor. The sway and the breath are key. I've found so many people that are left eye dominate (I recognize it because I'm right handed/ left eye). So you had a good instructor. The M4 was built for ease to shoot. PITA to take apart and put back together (lots of small parts, springs and such). They've fixed that now with a totally new gun. Better ammo, better gun, more diverse.

Donna- These guys also leave their "manifesto" somewhere. That's pretty much what I'm waiting for. The parts of the one from Nashville really put a lot together about the shooter. That's why the "claimed Republican" and the donation is interesting to me. The manifesto will fill in lots of blanks. I also want to know about the bombs in his car and house.

  19. by Donna on July 15, 2024 6:45 am

When I was 20, I was a registered Republican, but only because my parents were. I wasn't interested at all in politics then. But after a few years, I knew enough about politics to see that the Republican Party wasn't a good fit for me and I switched to independent where I remained for several decades to come.

  20. by Indy! on July 15, 2024 11:49 am
So you're not even a D and you're trying to shame others for not voting D (compounded by the fact you also didn't vote D yourself). What comes after "hypocrite"? Megahypocrite? Ultrahypocrite?

  21. by oldedude on July 15, 2024 11:56 am
Donna- Absolutely a good possibility. Again, I'm open to anything. I may not "like" it, but if it helps put the facts together, I'll take it.
