In Ronald Reagan’s second term, the gap between population median age and the president's age was the biggest in the last 75 years with a 44.7 years gap. Reagan was 76 when he left office.
Joe Biden is the oldest U.S. president ever, but the gap is three years smaller than it was with Reagan. The current median US age is 38.3 years.
The Washington Post chart doesn't go back that far, but in 1840 the median US age was 17.8. William Henry Harrison was elected in 1840 and died at age 68 a month after his inauguration. That was more than a 50 year gap.
When America's Founders set the minimum presidential age at 35, life expectancy was less than 40 years.
