Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Wednesday confirmed that a Jan. 5 text message to Mark Meadows disclosed as coming from a GOP member of Congress came from him.
Jordan texted: “On January 6, 2021, Vice President Mike Pence, as President of the Senate, should call out all the electoral votes that he believes are unconstitutional as no electoral votes at all".
This legally dubious argument that Pence could unilaterally invalidate or refuse to count any state’s electoral votes was rejected by Pence himself, despite Trump pressuring him to do so.
The original and fuller argument that Jordan was forwarding was from Joseph Schmitz, a former Defense Department inspector general in the George W. Bush administration.
Joseph Schmitz is the son of John Schmitz and the brother of Mary Kay Letourneau.
John George Schmitz (August 12, 1930 – January 10, 2001) was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives and California State Senate from Orange County, California. He was also a member of the John Birch Society. In 1972 he was the candidate for President of the United States of the American Independent Party, later known as the American Party.
Schmitz was notable for his extreme right-wing sympathies.
Mary Katherine Letourneau (née Schmitz; January 30, 1962 – July 6, 2020) was an American teacher who pleaded guilty in 1997 to two counts of felony second-degree rape of a child. The child was Vili Fualaau, who was 12 years old[1][2] when sexual relations first occurred and had been her sixth-grade student at a Burien, Washington elementary school.
