What would you do? Another ethical question concerning pardons.

In another thread on this page, we've had a lively discussion about the pros and cons of Joe Biden pardoning his son, Hunter. Now let's discuss another situation.
Say you are the president, would you pardon the father of your son-in-law if the older man was convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering after hiring a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, arranging to record a sexual encounter between the two, then sending the tape to his sister?
Would you later nominate the pardoned man to be ambassador to France?
BONUS QUESTION: Would such a pardon set a bad example for future presidents who might feel they have permission to pardon their family members?
These are the philosophical questions that try men's souls.

Question: Do I get all my information from your Holy Trinity and po's metaphorical Rachel?
by Curt_Anderson on December 4, 2024 10:58 am Trinity implies three. Which three do you mean?
Apparently my opening post poses quite the thought provoking moral dilemmas that even a former theological student cannot answer.

GOP has no morals so of course anything is fine with them. They'd nominate and re-elect a guy who tried to overthrow the gov't when he didn't get his crybaby way and then pretend like they were really voting for the vp candidate in the lamest attempt ever to cover their Brown Shorts MAGAt tracks.

I am surprised that given the presence of a religious scholar on the forum, the religious aspect has not been brought up. In the Christian and Judaic faiths, the power of pardon is an act of grace. Forgiveness and a fresh start. Absolute monarchies had the power of execution and of pardon to offset it.
Thomas Hobbes favoured it provided there was repentance. Repentance enters the question here as most of Trump's pardons are not for repenters but for those who believe they were justified in their crimes.
I don't see it as an issue of rule of law. The power is in the Constitution and it is not something that favours government over the people. It is law. In Trump's case, it is an abuse of the power.

by Curt_Anderson on December 4, 2024 2:05 pm HtS,
So why are you mentioning them and/or Rachel Maddow? They are not cited or mentioned in this thread.
by HatetheSwamp on December 4, 2024 2:31 pm
Your go-tos in sourcing deranged TrumpHate are your Holy Trinity, po's are the metaphorical Rachel.
There's a differing quality in those two loci, though both are pernicious. The Rachel is more fun to laugh at...
by oldedude on December 4, 2024 2:49 pm Lead- This is another po question. "Do you still beat your wife?" That's why I didn't get in to it. It's not an "ethical" question. Like I told Isle. In curts question, I wouldn't have done the pardon. Mostly because of what example he used and knowing what the trap was.

Outside of the board Brown Shorts, who's in favor of tRump pardoning the j6 terrorists?
by oldedude on December 4, 2024 8:29 pm More than half of them are getting released anyway because of constitutional and legal violations, so it may not be worth it.
