I had a hernia operation a couple of years ago. Fentanyl was used during the procedure during which I was not conscious. A robot operated on my, btw. Post-op I was sore for quite a while and told to avoid strenuous activity.

A few years ago I fell off a ladder and broke one of my lumbar vertebrae, the L-4. I was prescribed opioids in the hospital. I was stiff and sore for maybe a month after that.

But guess what, I didn't go to a doctor and complain about my pain and say that I needed more fentanyl or opioids. I definitely didn't look for Hispanic people on the street who might have sold me fentanyl or opioids.

Whenever I hear people bemoaning the "epidemic" of fentanyl or opioids, I am not sympathetic. Nobody is forced into addiction. Whatever happened to Nancy Reagan's "just say no"? Whatever happened to Republicans' insistence on personal responsibility?

    Curt,

Too bad you ain't Catholic. Your compassion makes Mother Theresa seem like a psychopath who pulled the wings off of flies.

    St. Curt.

    Has a ring to it!

HtS, I have compassion for the people of the world who want to escape poverty, violence and cruel regimes. I have compassion for people who trek thousands of miles for the chance to work and make a better life for themselves in America.

    That's not compassion.

Some people can quit cigarettes cold turkey, and some people have never been successful quitting cigarettes. One can become addicted to practically anything, and naturally some people are more successful quitting harmful habits than others. The human mind is extremely complex.

I'm glad that you didn't become addicted to fentanyl or opioids, Curt.

Doing drugs one time (especially while unconscious) does not turn one into a drug addict. The people who become addicted thru legal use of addictive drugs are the people with long term pain who are given the medication long enough to acquire a physical addiction. We've been over this before - drug abuse is not a moral issue (as Curt seems to still believe) - it is a mental and physical health issue.

Look, I can understand that some people have a lower tolerance for pain and discomfort than others. I get that some might ask their doctor for something to minimize the pain for a longer period of time than I might.

I also can understand that some people cannot resist the allure of cigarettes which are ubiquitous in tobacco shops, gas stations, grocery stores and vending machines. Not to mention cigarettes are legal. But if a person is seeking out immigrants on the street to procure fentanyl or opioids then they have a lot of the culpability for their own addiction.

I remember when I was younger that there was a lot of news coverage of heroin use in the inner cities by people of color. There was not a lot of sympathy for those addicts. They were arrested and tossed into jail.

Now the main abusers of fentanyl and opioids are young, Caucasian males often in rural areas. I don't hear people blaming them like they did non-white drug users in the past.

While we are on this topic...

Fentanyl Is Smuggled for U.S. Citizens By U.S. Citizens, Not Asylum Seekers

    Here are facts:

Fentanyl smuggling is ultimately funded by U.S. consumers who pay for illicit opioids: nearly 99 percent of whom are U.S. citizens.

In 2021, U.S. citizens were 86.3 percent of convicted fentanyl drug traffickers—ten times greater than convictions of illegal immigrants for the same offense.

Over 90 percent of fentanyl seizures occur at legal crossing points or interior vehicle checkpoints, not on illegal migration routes, so U.S. citizens (who are subject to less scrutiny) when crossing legally are the best smugglers.

The location of smuggling makes sense because hard drugs at ports of entry are about 97 percent less likely to be stopped than are people crossing illegally between them.

Btw, the reference below is not some lefty publication.

You still are not getting it. Using drugs over a long period of time can lead to a PHYSICAL addiction - not mental or moral. So it's easy to say "just don't buy drugs from strangers" but you don't get to that point until your body can no longer take the pain of NOT getting those drugs your body is demanding. Some doctors overprescribe (sometimes because drug companies give them perks for pushing their drugs) and sometimes pain is uncontrollable and the patient needs pain killers over a long period of time. There is no moral failure when these people get addicted - you would too whether you want to believe it or not. It's a simple matter of human physiology - drink a coke every day for a month and you will miss it the first day you don't. Human nature - nothing more.

A few months ago, a friend of 60 years standing went through Maid (Medically assisted death) because his pain had become intolerable and opioids were no longer sufficient.

I don't know whether he had become addicted or not but it is very clear that fentanyl or similar are necessary. They kept him alive enough to still be fully involved with his family and friends.

Me- I'm generally not supportive of MAID, and I do understand there are times it is very appropriate for that individual. So my empathy goes out to them. I hope it was peaceful.

I've been under hydrocodone and oxy for about 1.5 years because my sacrum is fused together with arthritis and pinching the nerves that come out of that bone. Like curt, I didn't ask for any of the drugs. I've also been under a plethora of drugs to allow me to walk 10'. So I understand what indy was talking about, and agree with him. What I found out was that for some reason, the chinese weren't going to import hydro- for months, so I was put on Oxy because that was the replacement which I knew I was allergenic to. I got tired of the weeping legs, and water blisters all over my body. So I quit cold turkey (NOT recommended for anyone). I had many of the withdrawal symptoms (this was about 2 weeks ago to put it into perspective to you all). Look it up. It's not pleasant but you do what you need to do.

My withdrawal case was mild apparently, although y'all may not think so reading my posts. I know curt doesn't care about any other human being (especially those looking for a better life and are kidnapped and raped for the rest of their lives). I replaced that drug with Naproxen.

Working in the counter-drug world, Here's what the docs know about the drugs.

Those who want to feel "loved" go to heroin/fentanyl. It drops the serotonin into the brain that you get the same high from being in love or just having orgasms. So curt, you may want to rethink your issues as a "choice." If someone who has been beaten and raped by a parental figure would have a choice, I'd think they'd rather be EFFING Loved by someone (usually their own family), rather than getting it out of an EFFIN needle.

Meth/coke. The idea is to find that first high you had when you used. You'll never find it and most of them die chasing that monster. And they smell like garbage that's been left in the bag in FL for two weeks. Tweeks? The reason they call them tweekers is because after using the meth for awhile, they literally lose control of their nerves. So they twitch. And they smell like garbage, and they're skinny and have sex for the days that they're high. Tweekers usually binge.

8balls- I'd like to know who invented this... They're an interesting person. The meth hits your brain like an EFFIN' rocket, then the heroin carries the high for awhile.

That's the broad spectrum. Hookers? usually heroin. That makes sense. You can usually tell by the big slices of skin and meat that are missing out of their bodies from the cellular response of the body to the drug if it's injected or snorted.

sorry to hear about your pain, od. I have arthritis everywhere so I have an idea of what you are going through. I don't have that much pain, though. I take the occasional Tynelol 2 which is inadequate but makes it tolerable. I can't walk without a walker and need help to navigate steps.

But it gets me lots of sympathy and family fussing so there are compensations. Also, sitting all day gives me more time to write, research, and watch programmes I never had time for.

  12. by Donna on October 15, 2024 9:26 am

I'm sorry you're going through so much pain, olde dude. My wife deals with pain every day too - disc problems in her mid and lower spine. She's taken all kinds of drugs to relieve the pain in addition to undergoing a procedure that was performed on the nerves in her spine.

Just found the video below. It's a report on drones that are being used to smuggle drugs into the US. It's rampant. Some drones can fly at altitudes of 20,000 ft now. Air Force and Navy pilots see them frequently.

Sorry to hear about your medical issues, OD, Meagain and Donna. We all can be categorized as senior citizens. We earned our pains and health issues. The primary abusers of drugs and users of illegal fentanyl and opioids are young men. I still think these youths are too soft and pain adverse if they “needed” pain pills in the first place.

  14. by Indy! on October 15, 2024 12:49 pm

The young people abusing drugs are generally not trying to kill pain, Curt. They're trying to party.

  15. by Curt_Anderson on October 15, 2024 12:52 pm
    Indy,
If you are correct, wouldn’t that be a “moral failing” that you mentioned?

  16. by Indy! on October 15, 2024 12:59 pm

No, it would be kids being kids. They're not worried about "moral failings" at that stage of life.
