And I can't say that I disagree with his reasoning. Every time I hear that Bernie voted against some sweetly named bill, I always know that he had a very good reason to do so. This case is no different. JFC, talk about PORK!

Here's Bernie's statement on voting NO on the bill:

NEWS: Sanders Statement on Voting “No” on Tax Deal
August 1, 2024

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today released the following statement after voting no on the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, which would deliver tens of billions of dollars in tax breaks to some of the country’s largest and most profitable corporations:

I strongly support restoring the expanded Child Tax Credit from the American Rescue Plan that reduced childhood poverty in America by over 40 percent.

I cannot, in good conscience, however, vote for the tax package that is being voted upon today.

At a time of massive wealth and income inequality, we should not be giving tens of billions of dollars in tax breaks to some of the largest and most profitable corporations in America.

Incredibly, this legislation would hand out a $2 billion retroactive tax break each to Lockheed Martin and Raytheon – some of the most profitable defense contractors in the world.

Further, at a time when Artificial Intelligence and automation threatens to displace millions of American workers, this legislation could provide billions of dollars in tax breaks to companies like Amazon, Google, Verizon, and Facebook to replace workers with machines or robots.

Three years ago, as part of the American Rescue Plan, Congress passed an expanded Child Tax Credit that put $300 a month per child directly into the bank accounts of tens of millions of families. This provision alone lifted nearly 4 million children out of poverty.

The tax bill on the floor today is only one-tenth the size of the Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan and would only last for three years. When all is said and done, this bill would provide at least $3 in corporate tax breaks for every $1 in tax cuts for working families with children. That is not a good deal.

It seems to me that this bill that gives wealthy corporations $3 in tax cuts to every $1 in tax credits given to "American families and workers" was somewhat erroneously named.

How about The American Corporation Tax Relief with Mere Dregs for American Families and Workers Act...?

But then this is how American politics works.

"No one gets anything from the government without corporations and the wealthy getting several times as much"

That's the Third Commandment of American Profitism. Our only truly state sanctioned and supported religion.

Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan bill Thursday on to expand the child tax credit and provide some tax breaks for businesses, all but sinking it for the rest of the year.

The vote was 48-44, with the vast majority of GOP senators voting against it. Democrats voted in favor, with the exception of two independents who caucus with Democrats: Sens. Bernie Sanders and Joe Manchin. And just three Republicans voted for it: Sens. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla.

    ***

It was a Trojan Horse-type bill that helped working families at tax time, but in the long run would financially hurt the many of those same families.

Congress would be able to do wonders for working class Americans if corporate money were removed from the legislative process.

I might be in favor of it if the money were specifically to provide things like healthcare, daycare, etc FOR CHILDREN OF THE EMPLOYEES (and also provide it during the working hours+ of the employees. Many of the parents are doing shiftwork). To just throw them money, yeahhhhhhhh....no.

My guess is that the MAGA Republicans only had a problem with the whole "Tax Relief for American Families and Workers" part of the bill.

The only reason we have presidential elections every 4 years is so corporate America can get an obscene "tax break" (really a "tax SHIFT" - moving taxes off corporate America and onto regular Americans). So don't be surprised if we start hearing calls from Fox and the other corporate whores for 2 year presidential terms so they can get twice as many "tax breaks".
