Gang,

There was a time that ole pb got nearly 100% of his news from NPR's MORNING EDITION and the PBS NewsHour.

The woke, white electric limousine lovin progressive Swampcult destroyed what may have been the greatest news source in human history and turned into a Holy Trinity for Curt's ilk to fan the flames of the preferences and prejudices that they take with them to every moment of their lives.

An, as po'd say it, EFFINtragedy.

Editor Uri Berliner 'eagerly' voted against Trump, but criticized NPR's lack of viewpoint diversity

"So on May 3, 2021, I presented the findings at an all-hands editorial staff meeting. When I suggested we had a diversity problem with a score of 87 Democrats and zero Republicans, the response wasn’t hostile. It was worse," he wrote in The Free Press. "It was met with profound indifference. I got a few messages from surprised, curious colleagues. But the messages were of the ‘oh wow, that’s weird’ variety, as if the lopsided tally was a random anomaly rather than a critical failure of our diversity North Star."

Berliner, who's been at NPR for 25 years, "eagerly" voted against Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, but wrote he found NPR's advocacy-style coverage of his presidency wrongheaded. He said he'd had regular conversations with news leaders about the homogeneous political culture, to no avail.

Berliner noted that polling showed NPR's audience had become significantly less diverse over the years as well, going from slightly left-leaning overall in 2011 to overwhelmingly so by 2023.

"Only 11 percent described themselves as very or somewhat conservative, 21 percent as middle of the road, and 67 percent of listeners said they were very or somewhat liberal," he said of the most recent survey.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don’t have an audience that reflects America," he added. "That wouldn’t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it’s devastating both for its journalism and its business model."

Back on the old forum, pb argued with tuk over the best definition of the Swamp. And, pb was bang on. The Swamp ain't just DC politicians and bureaucrats, it's also the entrenched dysfunctional and corrupt press.

This proves the point.

Please. NPR listeners are a dying breed just like the Fox crowd - old people who still think the old rules apply. The reason NPR's numbers are slipping is not because they have a bunch of Ds on staff - it's because nobody under 50 listens to radio anymore. NPR listeners are basically the Hillary crowd - people like Curt who think they're liberal, but are actually what were once called "Reagan Democrats" - conservatives pretending to be liberals because they think it makes them cool.

Not surprised at all. What it takes to be good reporter is the opposite of what it takes to be a good Republican. Reporters need to reject falsehoods and adhere to facts. Republicans reject facts and adhere to falsehoods.

I have no doubt, Curt, that that's what you genuinely think about journalism... and Republicans.

But, isle is bang on. NPR's audience is shrinking.

This morning I listened to the Ashland NPR affiliate here Las Vegas through my smart phone. Are online listeners counted? If so are they counted accurately?

  5. by HatetheSwamp on April 10, 2024 2:04 pm

    Yeah.

I only listen to radio on the Audacy and iHeartRadio apps. How that's measured, I don't know.

  6. by Indy! on April 10, 2024 8:33 pm

The way internet listeners are counted is a clunky, inaccurate process that deals with how many hits (clicks) a station gets at any given time. Like most web advertising... it's a scam.

when I worked for an advertising agency years ago it was always important for us to know A radio stations audience size for particular hour. That determined the price of the commercials we ran on the station. The way we measure that was through a measuring service called Arbitron, they since have become Nielsen audio. At any rate, the stations had to pay Arbitron to measure their audience size which they did through surveys. I asked why the local NPR affiliate didn’t show up in the ratings. It was explained to me that only stations that paid to be rated showed up. NPR locally did not pay, Hence they were not measured. NPR has a different revenue model As it is listener supported rather than through advertising.

I don't know how NPR and PBS measure their audience.

No one is disputing Berliner's stats. That part must be common knowledge.

Interestingly, his concern is the same as pb's... even if the politics are different.

Berliner cares about truth and the transmitting of truth. Not preaching nor evangelizing cloaked as journalism.

For Berliner, your Holy Trinity and po's metaphorical Rachel can go to blazes.

    Amen.

  9. by Indy! on April 11, 2024 11:06 am

Follow the logic, Curt... NPR doesn't have advertisers (in the traditional sense), so they don't care if Arbitron included them, Arbitron wasn't getting paid by NPR to survey their audience so they didn't, advertisers couldn't advertise on NPR so they didn't need the numbers. See how that works fine for everybody? 😉 Arbitron is actually now called Nielson Audio - owned by the same company that does the TV ratings.

True story - the first real job I had in advertising was working for the largest independent distributor in the country (before all manufacturers went direct to consumer). We did so much radio and TV advertising that one ad rep for a top radio station in Miami quit her job and formed her own radio network covering all of Florida just to get our business after we rejected her station for advertising because they didn't hit enough of our audience.

    Indy,
Follow the logic?! I already said the same thing you did in that paragraph.

Why are you so worried, peebs? NPR has the same chance of making a comeback as Rush Limbaugh. Broadcast radio is dead.
