Nobody will confuse Afghanistan with a liberal democracy. Their government and policies more closely resemble medieval Europe than modern Europe.
After Biden finally pulled the plug on our futile attempt to modernize Afghanistan, there was much moaning and groaning about "betraying" those Afghanis who assisted the United States military over the previous two decades.
However, a year later, I can't find any reports or other evidence that the Taliban is ruthlessly mass executing interpreters, drivers and others. It's not is if we don't any idea what's happening there. We managed know when Ayman al-Zawahiri would be sunning himself on his Kabul balcony. Western journalists come and go to Afghanistan.
We all do know of somebody who cooperated with the United States during the war years and is apparently alive and well. Hamid Karzai was installed as president of Afghanistan by the United States and western powers. Given his past; Karzai also led the Pashtun tribes in and around Kandahar in an uprising against the Taliban, you might think he'd the first person to be condemned by the Taliban. Nevertheless, he is now living in Kabul. He is not in jail or on trial.
Seriously, can anybody link to reports that the supposed hundreds of Afghan interpreters who were "left behind" have been summarily executed or imprisoned? Or were the fears unfounded?
