That seems to be a very convoluted story. I think, the two most important reasons were. 1. That they were hoping for something different than they have been experiencing for a long time. Most of it in the last generation under Democratic Presidencies. 2. I believe that it was the younger voters who did. They have never known anything different and to them, Trump was just a normal politician with an over-the-top way of presenting himself but promising change. Even so, a considerable majority still voted Democratic.
