As of tonight, the Lakers are in fifth place and Dallas is eighth place in the Western Conference. Let's see where those teams are at the end of the regular season and how they do in the playoffs.

NEW YORK -- In a blockbuster trade that figures to impact the Western Conference balance of power for years to come, the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz agreed to a three-team deal that will swap Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.

L.A. will receive Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris from the Mavericks, sources said. Dallas will receive Davis, Max Christie and the Lakers' 2029 first round pick.

The Jazz will receive Jalen Hood-Schifino, the Clippers' 2025 second round pick and the Mavs' 2025 second round pick.

Speaking of the NBA, I'm hearing that attendance and viewership is way down. The main complaint I heard is that the game has devolved into dueling 3-pt shot attempts. If that's true, (idk, I'm not a fan,) maybe, as players concentrate on and improve their long-shooting skills, it works out better mathematically to tune offenses more toward a 3-pt shot game.

Lakers and Mavs basically trading problems. Feels like a hail Mary play by the Lakers to win one last championship with Lebron. Might be worth checking in on the NBA just to see how frustrated Lebron gets with Doncic not taking care of himself or playing hard all the time.

So far as Donna's comment - that's what already happened. The Warriors' dynasty with Steph and Klay changed the game to a 3pt shot contest which made the regular season boring af. Everybody already changed their offense to a 3pt game and now the pendulum is swinging back with more teams drafting/signing big men for more of an inside game. There are other problems too - the "maintenance" thing with players just randomly taking games off hurts ticket sales and viewership, too many regular season games, too dependent on old stars like Lebron... IMHO, Adam Silver is too lax with addressing some of these problems.

The good news? The postseason is still interesting (sometimes).

Dallas is currently losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers by 49 points in the middle of the fourth quarter. Oof! Apparently, the trade has not improved team morale

Doncic was the guy Mark Cuban loved and was determined to build the team around. He's been called the "best player in the league" by some. So it's a bit surprising Cuban is giving up on him while he still has plenty of tread on the tires - he's only 25 and finished 3rd in MVP voting last year. Gotta believe the Lakers' incentive is looking past the Lebron era which has to end sooner or later (they might have to unceremoniously dump him if he doesn't retire soon). They have to be pissed about taking on Lebron's kid who - by almost every estimation out there - is not good enough to play in the NBA.

Good news? Patrick Mahomes is apparently pissed his Mave dumped Doncic. 😃

My Heat needs to dump Jimmy Butler by Feb.6

Speaking of the Heat, the Blazers suddenly are hot. It's like a switch turned on. They beat the Heat, Milwaukee and five other teams in the last eight games. Their sole loss was to OKC. They've been beating teams by double digits recently. It's been balanced scoring without a single player being the star every game.

Doncic is obviously good, but it's odd how pudgy and unathletic he looks. He's been injured for a few games. Maybe that's why Dallas shipped him off.

Mark Cuban used to be the majority owner of the team but now only holds a minor stake. Cuban says he wasn't consulted and didn't know about the deal beforehand.

I looked into it and apparently Cuban owns 27% of the team and still oversees basketball operations. They list him as "alternate governor". I find it very hard to believe he didn't know the team was trading his boy. More likely he's saying that to cya his brand.

Interesting that he's been selling the team shares to Miriam Adelson apparently - widow of Sheldon Adelson who tried to hoodwink Mark Davis into giving up part of the team for the Las Vegas deal. Wondering if she had been planning on moving the team to Vegas to fulfill her hubby's failed dream of putting a major league team of their own in Vegas. Kind of funny if so, because Davis basically took Adelson for the ride of his life and ended up with everything - the team, the stadium and the new market while Adelson got play BIGTIME in public. Wondering if Miriam is having the same issue because when they talk about NBA expansion - Vegas is the first city always mentioned. They're ripe for filling out the top 4 major leagues now, but unfortunately there won't be any room for the Mavs if she was planning on moving them there.

BTW, when it comes to ownership shares - having the most shares doesn't necessarily mean you control the team. Mark Davis owns about the same 27% or so of the Raiders now (recent share sales to Tom Brady and others make it hard to judge) - but he still has controlling interest in the team and will never lose it unless he wants to give it up. That's how Al Davis set things up when he was the "managing general partner" of all the shareholders. Everybody (about 8 partners) started with controlling shares, but only Al's shares were controlling shares into perpetuity. So when the other partners died off and their shares were either sold or inherited by the kids - they automatically became non-controlling shares. So only Mark Davis (actually his mother Carol) has controlling interest shares.
