Canada’s former finance minister Chrystia Freeland has said Ottawa should retaliate to any US tariffs by adding huge levies on Tesla vehicles to punish Elon Musk, one of Donald Trump’s “billionaire buddies”.
Freeland, who is running to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister, called for a swift, punitive reaction by Ottawa if the US president follows through on his threat to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting this weekend.
“Canada must threaten to impose a 100 per cent tariff on all Tesla vehicles and a 100 per cent tariff on US wine, beer and spirits if unfair tariffs are imposed on Canadians,” Freeland said on Friday.
Freeland, who was part of the Canadian team that negotiated the US-Mexico-Canada trade deal signed by Trump during his first presidency, said releasing a targeted list of potential retaliatory tariffs on $200bn worth of American imports would show where “we can hit Trump where it hurts”.
“By targeting products from Republican states that voted for Trump and products made by his billionaire buddies, Canada can exert unavoidable political pressure on the White House,” she said.

Paywall. Other than that I like the idea. Of course the orange ass monkey and Fox "news" will convince the MAGAts that it was Biden's ultra-lib-ur-roll policies and DEI that made their products too expensive to buy in other countries.

The US's GNP is 11 times greater than Canada's.

Why would Canada NOT retaliate that way? I hope they don't chicken out.

Exclusive: Trump set to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada starting on March 1, sources say
Donna,
"Why would Canada NOT retaliate that way? I hope they don't chicken out."
Why would Canada not retaliate? Oy! As your "dithering and diminished" "feckless dementia-ridden" Doddering Old Fool would say, "C'mon. Gimme a break, man"
Why would Canada NOT declare military war against the US? Why wouldn't Mexico? Or Colombia?
BECAUSE THE US WOULD, as po'd say, EFFINdestroy THEM!
The US's GDP is 11 times larger than Canada's... 9 times larger than Mexico's.
If Canada or Mexico or both fight a tariff war against Trump, their economies will be, again, citing po, freakin friggin EFFINdecimated!
Here's my old analogy: Canada, Mexico and Trump are playing poker and Trump is dealt a Royal Flush every hand. That's the truth. Like it or not.
The reports I'm reading suggest that Trump's giving Canada and Mexico a month's notice. I'm guessing that quiet negotiations are taking place to avoid the tariffs...
... and that they won't be imposed, or, Canada and Mexico will bend the knee within days. reuters.com

So it's March 1st now. That's because they retaliated. Americans should do the same.
ALWAYS stand up to bullies. It's the only way to defeat them.
Trump's approval rating us already underwater, and it will continue to go further underwater.
When it finally sinks into the MAGA psyche that their hero is making things WORSE for them, they will rebel too.

Could it be that your woke SwampMedia inaccurately reported the story?

Your story that the tariffs will start any day other than March 1.

You are an idiot. !774+. 1866+, 1812. Three attempts made by the USA to destroy Canada. Each time, Americans were sent back with their tails between their legs.
There is not the slightest chance that Canada will ever back down. It is made of sterner stuff than tens of millions of obese Americans. In fact, what is happening so far is that Canada is now more united than it has been in half a century because of President Bonespurs.
I sometimes respond on Facebook to an idiot on a forum with thousands of brain-dead Americans. As I told him the other day, the Whitehouse is about two minutes away from Canada by missile.
It is pretty silly to even talk of he possibility of America invading Canada for a lot of reasons. More than a million Americans are working in Canada and the reverse.
by Ponderer on February 1, 2025 3:51 pm
And the US is divided. I fully support Mexico's and Canada's response to Trump's threats.

Let's do a math tutorial. If your numbers are correct, then the US GDP is five times of Mexico and Canada combined. That closes the gap. Trudeau and Sheinbaum, the leaders of those two countries, are conferring right now. They almost certainly will target Trump's pals like Elon Musk and exporting red states with tariffs. I am guessing it will be higher than 25%. All that lessens the GDP gap. So certain US manufacturers and farmers will be impacted.
On top of that, it's consumers, here and abroad, who foot the bill for tariffs on imported items. If you are unhappy with prices now at Walmart and the grocery store, watch what happens if this trade war drags on.
The other factors is that Mexicans and Canadians, who haven't done anything wrong, will feel it's their patriotic duty to stand up to Trump. It may hurt, but they have the advantage of righteous indignation.

Curt,
Let me be clear... AGAIN! I'm a libertarian-ish GOP. I hate tariffs.
I'm simply laughing at y'nes, who are rushing to line up with Project 2025, because Trump wants tariffs.
And, bruh! Five times is still five times. No one's going to win over these tariffs, as far as I can tell.
But, Trump is holding the Royal Flush. Mexico and the Canucks will lose worse.
