[Being a tariff bully] could backfire in the long run, further destabilizing an already tenuous global order and even pushing would-be partner countries closer to Beijing.
“People in Latin America are extremely worried,” said Jorge Heine, the former Chilean ambassador to China. For South America “the message is that it’s not a good idea to be very closely interlinked with the United States, because you might pay a heavy price,” continued Heine, who is now a professor at Boston University. “And as a result of that, China’s prospects for stronger ties have been enhanced.”
People avoid doing business with people who threaten them and who they don’t trust. America is a big market, but we are not the only market .

A curious take on, the glass is half full.
Sadly, for you, Curt, the size of US economy will most likely compel the nations of South America to maintain close ties with us. Our money still spends... and, there's lots of it.
But, by all means, keep a good thought.

The ultimate end goal of the MIC is the big payoff with China. So it works fine for them.
by Curt_Anderson on January 28, 2025 12:25 pm Indy,
I am not sure I get what you mean. The Military Industrial Complex will get the war (big payoff) they seek with China? That as a result of Trump's antagonizing our allies?
Contrary to Trump and HtS's brand of thinking, acting like an unpredictable lunatic making threats might work in "Lethal Weapon" movie, but in real life people avoid dealing with people like that.

To quote "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap:" God save the Queen, man! Asufutimaehaehfutbw!, and, of course, "End of quote. Repeat the line."
If the world survived the Former Truck Driver, my guess is that it'll do fine under Trump.

What do you think the Greenland/Denmark thing is about, Curt? The MAGAt Cults crazed obsession that everyone out to get them.
by Curt_Anderson on January 28, 2025 12:53 pm I get that Indy, I just didn't know what you meant by the "big payoff with China".
by meagain on January 28, 2025 1:10 pm Greenland is interesting.
First, it has great mineral potential and particularly rare earths. There is one mineral or ore - I don't remember what it is, that is found in Greenland and nowhere else in quantity.
Now, I think it is more a military matter. Bases to give early response to Russia.
That is also something that nobody even mentions. The Northwest passage through the Arctic and its commercial and military implications. It would shorten the route from the East Coast to, say, Tokyo, by three thousand miles. The passage goes entirely through waters that Canada claims since it passes through some very large Canadian Islands and is within Canada's territorial waters. Russia is trying to claim vast areas of the Arctic, including what is most likely Canada's. America claims that the passage would be subject to the Law of the Sea agreements and international waters. Probably correctly but it would still give Canada some degree of control.
All tied up with oil potential and fishing rights. Russia gets 20% of its fish from the Arctic now.
That is a brief outline of a complex situation that will be a flash point in the not too distant future. It is on everybody's back burner for now since the Arctic is not easily navigated yet. But it will be in 30 years or so. Sooner if other countries follow Trump's lead and end the fight on climate change.
I don't know whether that could all be part of the scheme. I sort of doubt that Trump even knows where the Passage is but one or two of his cabal who might have a bit of education and brain could be pushing it. And, as far as I know, I am the only one who is suspecting or mentioning it.
by Curt_Anderson on January 28, 2025 1:30 pm Meagain,
Interesting thought about the Northwest Passage.

China is the long game. Greenland has some sort of mineral that Leon Musk wants. Used to make batteries or something with the cars. Canada we want for the hockey.

Trump is teaching American children that it's okay to grab women's pussies without permission and invade sovereign nations, even if they're allies, in order to steal their natural resources. What a role model for our children!
A lot of MAGAs want to terminate our Constitution and democratic republic, fire all federal government workers, and replace it all with a corporate CEO. I think that Trump would like that, too, if he were the CEO. He's already on record saying that he wants to terminate parts of our Constitution. And they're already sending out letters to federal government employees offering to pay them their full salaries through the end of September if they resign right now.

Really? How about a link to that one.

Donna,
No doubt. I'm asking you to inform me. Please.
by oldedude on January 29, 2025 11:22 pm Is that like cliton that it's okay for a male in the position of power to demand quid pro quo sex to keep your job? Or that a blow job isn't sex? I guess you forgot about those.
by Indy! on January 30, 2025 9:07 am
The GOP claimed children were asking their parents about blow jobs when Clinton got one from Monica. But now that it's Trump - talking about grabbing pussy in PUBLIC - suddenly the kids are clueless?
Typical hypocritical MAGAts - always want things both ways.
