"as billionaire plans deep spending cuts"????????????????

You MAGAs are going to allow your Lord & Master to appoint this sociopathic rich-ass mutherfucker to make life even more difficult on working class Americans????????????????????

***

In the home stretch of the 2024 election, voters who’ve been weighing both campaigns’ proposals to tackle living costs are now hearing a new pitch from the Republican side: accept some short-term economic pain to rein in government spending.

That message has emerged from former President Donald Trump’s wealthiest backer, Elon Musk, who says that the GOP nominee’s plans to put the U.S. on firmer fiscal footing would likely entail “temporary hardship” for ordinary Americans.

At a virtual town hall event on October 25 held on Musk’s social media platform, X, the multibillionaire Tesla and SpaceX executive said he was “praying for a victory” for Trump, so he could begin working in a high-level cabinet role to axe federal spending.

“We have to reduce spending to live within our means,” Musk said. “And, you know, that necessarily involves some temporary hardship, but it will ensure long-term prosperity,” he said.

["live within "our" means? HA! Trump and his rich co-conspirators should probably hire body guards now if they haven't already. I know that Trump already has them. - Donna]

Many economists agree that Trump’s economic and fiscal proposals could spark an economic calamity, though it is not clear whether they have considered, or given credence, to Musk’s calls for austerity.

In a joint letter released last week, 23 Nobel Prize-winning economists warned Trump’s plans for tariffs, tax cuts and an immigration crackdown — including detaining and deporting millions of people — would “lead to higher prices, larger deficits, and greater inequality.” More than anything, they wrote, Trump would undermine the rule of law and political certainty, “the most important determinants of economic success.”

There are no MAGAs currently posting on SS.

I've been telling Curt since the 022 election that he should rustle up some genuine Trump followers for the pleasure of our practitioners of deranged TrumpHate. He refuses to hear me.

Chats would be tons more fun here if he did.

What we really need to do is raise the income tax to 90% at the top level like it was back in the day. That is - if Leon and FatAss are serious about cutting deficits. I guarantee Trump has never spent a single moment caring - much less worrying - about the national debt or deficit.

But, Donna. Do you honestly think many $billions of pork can't be cut from federal spending?

Throughout our lifetime, there has been literally trillions of dollars that our government has spent on corporate welfare. Trump threw a couple trillion away when he gave billionaires a tax cut, which he's promised to do again.

It sounds good to say that government should "reduce spending to live within our means", but it's not a great idea when you think about it.

Other than perhaps a few hermits and off-the-grid subsistence farmers, people do not "live within their means". We cannot afford to. We borrow money to buy a car since a car opens up the number of job possibilities we can get. A good job makes paying off the car loan easier. We might get a loan to buy an electric, hybrid or other fuel efficient car because we will save on gasoline in the future.

Former renters borrow money to buy a house, because it would take a lifetime to save the money to buy the house with cash. Homeowners borrow money to replace a leaky roof or fix structural issues because it's better to repair than let the house be destroyed by inattention. These are all investments we make in ourselves.

Likewise, when America fixes roads, bridges and other infrastructure items it prevents further damage and loss of life. The same goes for social welfare programs including care for the elderly, schools for kids, correctional institutions, military etc. because it addresses concerns before they become insurmountable problems. There are countless things that American does now and pays for later because it is an investment in ourselves.

Absolutely. We can save half a trillion or so EVERY YEAR simply by cutting the military and the rest of the... ahem... "security state" down to a reasonable size (start by halving it to save that half trillion).
