C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (usually shortened to "A3" ) is visible without binoculars. Ponderer and I saw it last night. It'll be visible at least for the rest of this week, but it'll get a little dimmer each night as it moves farther from Earth.
I've seen six comets, and this one is the best I've ever seen. I first spotted it last night w/o binoculars, and then I looked at it again through binoculars. Tonight we're going to drive a short way to where we can get a better view of it, and we're going to bring along our telescope.
To find it, look west right after sunset. You might have to wait a while for it to get dark enough to see it. It's about midway between Venus (which is easy to spot; it's the very bright star-like object in the WSW) and the sun. You'll see a fainter star-like object with a verticle tail, which is A3.

Thanks for the heads-up, Donna - I'm going to look for it. 👍

Enjoy!
Btw, I answered a topic you directed at me a few weeks ago about UAP, but it fell off the first page as this one probably will by this time tomorrow. All anyone wants to discuss on this forum is politics.
Ironically, though, the topic of UAP has become political in recent years, but it's also non-partisan. In fact, the term "non-human intelligence" is mentioned in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act over twenty times, and the context isn't AI - it has to do with UFOs.

They're warming us up for the big reveal. The advent of camera phones demands it.

Here's a link to last year's Congressional UAP hearing which features sworn testimonies from Navy pilots David Fravor (who also appeared on 60 Minutes with another Navy pilot who was an eyewitness to a UAP encounter) and Ryan Graves, and intelligence officer David Grusch.

Can't see it. Hard to tell, but I think we have a thin cloud layer covering the stars. I could see Venus earlier in the last bits of daylight - now I can't see it when it's dark.

Yeah, the sky has to be cloudless and with little to no haze. Wait about 45 minutes after official sundown to view it.
Ponderer and I drove to a spot a few miles from home last night that had a better view of the western horizon. Comet A3 was spectacular! Easily the best comet out of the 6 I've seen. Its tail is incredibly long. I could see its tail better when I used my peripheral vision, which is more sensituve to light. The tail looked to be about the length of 4 full moon diameters. Our telescope really brought out the definition of its nucleus.
Last night, it was slightly higher than Venus and about 3 hand widths to its right, and it will continue to track higher and more to the left until it fades out.

4X the size of the moon? The moon was full last night and very big here.
by Donna on October 15, 2024 1:06 pm
I use the Moon diameter to convey the size of things seen in the sky.
by Indy! on October 15, 2024 2:24 pm
Yes, but that sounds HUGE. The moon was about the size of a round breath mint last night - Venus was smaller than a pinhead.
by Donna on October 15, 2024 2:27 pm
Right. The tail was very long.

Looks cool. Cloud cover again tonight - can't see it.
by Donna on October 16, 2024 7:35 am
That sucks.
That's one reason why I like living in the sun belt.

South Florida is normally very clear. We don't have the pollution most of America experiences because we're in the NE tradewinds not the westerlies.
by meagain on October 16, 2024 11:05 am There is a supermoon tonight. Not as exciting as a comet, though. The moon will be 30% brighter and appear 15% bigger.
