I predict that JD Vance will win the debate in the eyes of those who use National Speech and Debate Association criteria to score debates. Incidentally, multiple reports are saying that debates are where Vance is the most comfortable (as opposed to ordering doughnuts, apparently).

For everybody else, that's the vast majority of Americans, I predict that Walz will come across better and more likeable than Vance, and people will be more comfortable with the idea of a VP Walz.

I also predict no matter happens tomorrow night, it won't cause any upheaval in the polls.

CBS News, host of Tuesday’s vice-presidential matchup between Senator JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz, is using technology to try something new.

A QR code — the checkerboard-like, black-and-white box that can be scanned by a smartphone — will appear onscreen for long stretches of the CBS telecast. Viewers who scan the code will be directed to the CBS News website, where a squad of about 20 CBS journalists will post fact-checks of the candidates’ remarks in real time.

The code will appear only on CBS; viewers who tune in on a different channel will not see it. (Nearly every major network will simulcast the debate, starting at 9 p.m. Eastern.)

Fox has been reporting that the Walz team is engaged in unprecedented and herculean efforts to downplay expectations. But, Curt and po already know that. Bahaha.

Also,... I suspect that CBS won't be as brazen as ABC in its bias.

And, finally, I couldn't care less.

  3. by Curt_Anderson on September 30, 2024 4:36 pm
    HtS,
It's hardly unprecedented to downplay expectations. It's the smart move to remind viewers that Vance is a Yale educated, experienced debater.

ABC moderators fact-checked the most egregious falsehoods, which of course were uttered by Trump. That's why you think they were biased.

CBS's approach of real-time fact checking online is a good idea.

  4. by HatetheSwamp on September 30, 2024 4:41 pm

    I said unprecedented and herculean.

Still, your Good Germaning is world class.

  5. by Curt_Anderson on September 30, 2024 4:44 pm
Apparently, you have low standards and expectations for "herculean" efforts, HtS.

  6. by HatetheSwamp on October 1, 2024 3:16 am

Thing is, Curt. You watch Fox. You know I'm right.

  7. by Donna on October 1, 2024 6:50 am

I think it'll go sorta like the debate where someone Trump dubbed as "stupid" and "mentally ill" ate him for lunch.

  8. by HatetheSwamp on October 1, 2024 7:25 am

"I think it'll go sorta like the debate where someone Trump dubbed as "stupid" and "mentally ill" ate him for lunch."

By cheating in a rigged debate.

  9. by Indy! on October 1, 2024 7:29 am

I don't "feel comfortable" with Vance anywhere near the US gov't. He's a backwoods hillbilly cosplaying as a vp candidate.

  10. by Curt_Anderson on October 1, 2024 11:43 am
The Trump campaign appears to be trying to manage expectations ahead of tonight’s vice presidential debate between Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, but Donald Trump doesn’t seem to be on message, calling Kamala Harris’s running mate “a moron”.

Earlier, during a campaign call with reporters, senior Trump adviser Jason Miller said: “Walz is very good in debates. I want to repeat that: Tim Walz is very good in debates. Really good. He’s been a politician for nearly 20 years. He’ll be very well-prepared for tomorrow night.”

It will be embarrassing if Trump-Vance lose their debates to a "mentally disabled" person and to a "moron".

We'll never know what went on behind the scenes to enhance TT's performance.

  12. by Curt_Anderson on October 1, 2024 11:56 am
    HtS,
What, pray tell, is the debate performance enhancer that Walz might avail himself of that is not available to Vance?

  13. by HatetheSwamp on October 1, 2024 12:24 pm

ABC moderators rigged their debate. CBS might be as crooked.

  14. by Ponderer on October 1, 2024 1:46 pm

I guess whether or not the debate was rigged will all hinge on whether Trump does well or tanks himself like last time.

  15. by Curt_Anderson on October 1, 2024 2:10 pm
    HtS,
Yass, yass, ABC was so mean in how they rigged the debate by tricking Trump into talking about Haitians, cats and dogs. Do think CBS will trick Vance into making a fool of himself too?

  16. by Ponderer on October 1, 2024 2:40 pm

I meant Vance. Trump is too chickenshit to debate Kamala again.

  17. by HatetheSwamp on October 1, 2024 2:50 pm

    po,

Kammy can agree to that Fox debate any time she wants to whip Trump Orange@$$ again.

  18. by Curt_Anderson on October 1, 2024 3:29 pm
    HtS,
Harris has not ruled out a FOX debate. But it doesn't matter since Trump hasn't agreed to a FOX debate. He might, Trump said, if the FOX moderators were Sean Hannity, Jesse Watters or Laura Ingraham, but FOX hasn't offered that possibility.

I don't "feel comfortable" with Vance anywhere near the US gov't. He's a backwoods hillbilly cosplaying as a vp candidate.
So you reject Lincoln. I'll kind of agree with that. He didn't have the spine to also run a war. The only reason he won it was to have the manufacturing capability. He damn sure couldn't pick a leader.

  20. by meagain on October 1, 2024 7:25 pm
I just watched about 15 minutes before boredom set in. I go along with Curt's prediction that Vancw will win in the eyes of the people.

Walz talks too fast and seems to operating on nervous energy. He is more accurate than Vance but Vance talks about common sense and the ignorant are great believers in Common sense, putting it far ahead of experts. It takes more than the old trope about a plumber or a doctor. Immigration favours Vance. People are easily persuaded of the problems there: housing etc. Even though immigration has little to do with it.

I could be wrong based on that small sample.

And it's comical for you to pretend like you know more about winning wars than someone who actually won a war. When we need someone with parking lot janitorial expertise - we'll give you a call. 😉

  22. by Indy! on October 1, 2024 8:47 pm
Daily Show is hinting strongly that Walz was the one who came off as weird. I only saw a little and almost no actual "debating" - but Walz did look at times like he was about 10 minutes away from Biden's slack-jawed, grandpa should be in bed look from the first debate. 🥱

  23. by Ponderer on October 1, 2024 9:32 pm

    Walz won.

  24. by Indy! on October 1, 2024 9:39 pm

Don't kill the messenger, Pondy. I'm just reporting the facts and besides - nobody cares about the veeps. 🙂

  25. by Curt_Anderson on October 1, 2024 9:39 pm
Vance came across as polished and smooth but also phony. He brought up his "beautiful children" three times by my count. I'd like a fact check on that: are his kids really beautiful? His delivery was often good, but his words were like the gobbledegook you might hear from used car salesman.

Vance was evasive in his answers. He couldn't say if Trump won or lost the last election. Sometimes his lies were laughable, like Trump saved Obamacare or Trump peacefully transferred power.

Vance argued that Kamala Harris has been vice president for almost four years so why didn't she do what she is proposing on the campaign trail before. I wonder how many people think that the VP is all powerful. He even referred to the "Harris administration". I just don't think it's effective to pretend that Harris had absolute power for the last four years.

Walz was clearly not comfortable in the debate setting. I suspect that people can relate to that. But he was more plain spoken and had the more pithy rejoinders.

Bottom line, my prediction stands: this debate won't move the needle one way or the other.

  26. by Curt_Anderson on October 1, 2024 10:08 pm
    This is probably right.

CBS flash poll: The debate was a draw
The vast majority of debate watchers also described Tuesday night as “generally positive.”

Voters who watched the VP debate rendered a split decision in a flash poll conducted by CBS News and YouGov.

Roughly equal shares of debate-watchers scored JD Vance (42 percent) and Tim Walz (41 percent) the winner, the poll showed. The remaining 17 percent called it a tie.

  27. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 4:07 am

The moderators were almost as biased as ABC's. Did you notice they attempted to fact-check Vance over Springfield and JD called them on breaking the rules.

It was three against one. That polls show Vance with an ever so slight win is a mega victory for him. He was in the lion's den and came out unscratched.

As pb repeats here, the only thing that matters is what moderate and independent common sense voters think. They vote based on feelings. Because of the moderators, when the dust settles, pb predicts they'll give this'ne to the gut who stood up to the SwampMedia bullies.

  28. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 4:19 am

Here's the video of Vance calling out the CBS cheating moderators, calmly and respectfully...

The JD Vance who wrote Hillbilly Elegy appeared last night. Agree with him or disagree... Of the four candidates, he's the only one with enough brain to be President.

  29. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 4:43 am

And,... and I love this... BIG BROTHER CUT VANCE'S MIKE!!!!!

That moment is a perfect picture of the politics of the Swamp!

All of that, and voters still give Vance a slight edge!!!! Keehee ha, ahhhhhhhhhhh!

  30. by Ponderer on October 2, 2024 6:55 am

"Did you notice they attempted to fact-check Vance over Springfield and JD called them on breaking the rules." -Hate

Yeah. I loved that part. And good for those journalists for refusing to not be journalists. And Vance whined and bitched like a left-out puppy.

"B... BUT...! BUT, I thought I was supposed to be allowed to lie my ass off and not be called out on it!!! WAAAAHHHH! WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!" -JD Vance

Indy!, I don't know what debate you or Jon were watching. But Walz was the only one who had and explained actual plans and facts. There wasn't anything weird about his debate performance at all that I saw. I thought he had excellent responses for everything Vance lied about on the stage.

Vance was polished and is a pro at this kinda stuff. But he just didn't have any relevant or accurate facts to present in Trump's favor.

But still, I gotta say that it was the most like a human being Vance has seemed since this all started.

His declaring that Trump helped save Obamacare was the side-splitting highlight of the night I thought. What a laugh.

That, and when asked if he and Trump would preserve pre-existing conditions in their concept of a health care plan, he said that there are laws in place to keep that from going away. "YEAH!!! IT'S CALLED THE ACA!!!" I screamed at the TV.

But Vance still not allowing himself to say that Trump lost the last election was the topper. Oh man! He only proved utterly and conclusively what an obsequious lap dog of Trump's he is. He'd have happily broken the law and done what Trump wanted Pence to do on January 6th. Without hesitation or a second thought.

Lawrence O'Donnell commented last night that JD Vance will go down in history as the only vice-presidential candidate who didn't know who won the previous election.

"He brought up his "beautiful children" three times by my count." -Curt

Yeah. It was startlingly evident when he would shift into tear-jerker gear like that. Like there was a little voice in his head saying, "Oooo! Now you gotta play on their emotions and make yourself look human!". And how he kept trying to pump his middle-class background and compete with Kamala on that regard, like it had anything to do with the fuckingasshole he became and is today.

"BIG BROTHER CUT VANCE'S MIKE!!!!!" -Hate

Both mics were cut at the same time, Bill.

But please, don't let me interfere with your wailing and gnashing of teeth.

    po,

You are our second ranked expert on Fox News, behind only Curt.

You know better than anyone, except Curt, that all of the right-wing media is having multiple orgasms over the debate, not only because of Vance but pbDem Joe Klein is comparing Tampon Timmy's performance to Joe Biden’s.

TT's most quoted line from the debate? "I'm a knucklehead." So EFFINtrue!

Pondy - just fyi, the debate I was watching was a rerun of the Vikings Packers game. And it wasn’t Jon Stewart last night it was the other white dude (don’t know his name). 🙂

  36. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 7:40 am

And, Indy, that's the point. Trump blipped up ever so slightly on Polymarket overnight. But, few watched. No one cares.

Still, to suggest that the debate wasn't the slaughter of Tampon Man is idiocy.

  37. by Indy! on October 2, 2024 7:41 am

    Peebs… ”Vance was in the Lion’s den…”

    First off - 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😉😂😉😉😂😂😂😉😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😉😂

secondly - So Tim Walz… the guy you’re still trying to hang the moniker “Tampon Tim” on… is the “lion” in your version of the debate? 😂

  38. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 7:55 am

No, Indy. The CBS moderators and CBS itself. That's the Lion. They didn't lay a claw on him.

  39. by Ponderer on October 2, 2024 7:56 am

"all of the right-wing media is having multiple orgasms over the debate" -Hate

    Absolutely meaningless.

They had multiple orgasms over Trump's debate performance when in all objectively, he was a catastrophe on that stage. Cult members will cheer on their leaders for anything. Vance could have dropped his drawers and taken a giant dump on that stage and you'd all be praising his brilliant and spontaneous ingenuity.

He lied his theocratic ass off last night, Bill. Not that that matters a damn to you MAGA Hats.

  40. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 8:08 am

    Bull%#!t. You're not a liar. You're an EFFIiar.

    po,

Are you so much a prisoner of the preferences and prejudices that you bring with you to every moment of your life that you can't see that JD was impressive last night?

Just curious. Name three lies Vance told.

  41. by Ponderer on October 2, 2024 8:37 am

"Name three lies Vance told." -Hate

    • Harris did not let in 20-25 million undocumented immigrants.

    • Trump did not "salvage" the Affordable Care Act.

    • “The statute [Walz] signed into law, it says that a doctor who presides over an abortion where the baby survives — the doctor is under no obligation to provide life-saving care to a baby who survives a botched late-term abortion.”

    • He said he has never supported a national abortion ban. He most definitely has.

    • “Iran, which launched this attack, has received over $100 billion in unfrozen assets thanks to the Kamala Harris administration.

    • "We are a rich and prosperous enough country where every American, whether they’re rich or poor, ought to be able to turn on their heat in the middle of a cold winter night. That’s gotten more difficult thanks to Kamala Harris’ energy policies,"

    • “You’ve got housing that is totally unaffordable because we brought in millions of illegal immigrants to compete with Americans for scarce homes.”

    • “We’re the cleanest economy in the entire world,"

    • “What President Trump has said is that there were problems in 2020, and my belief is that we should fight about those issues, debate those issues peacefully in the public square. And that’s all I’ve said, and that’s all that Donald Trump has said,"

Oh! Please forgive me. You only asked for three. My bad.

  42. by Indy! on October 2, 2024 8:45 am
So you and Vance are whining about a “lion’s den” that had a lion with no claws. Yep - I called it again… Vance is a pussy.

  43. by Ponderer on October 2, 2024 8:47 am

Indy!, the Republican party is a party of whining, cry-baby, sore loser pussies.

  44. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 8:58 am

Your lying about Vance doesn't make him a liar. It makes YOU a liar.

How about some real world links.

  45. by Indy! on October 2, 2024 10:39 am

Peebs definition of "real world" - the Fox bubble.

  46. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 11:21 am

Anything not in Curt's Holy Trinity and po's metaphorical Rachel.

I don't think that any woke SwampDem here knows any media beyond them, though.

  47. by Ponderer on October 2, 2024 11:28 am

Please feel free, Bill, to post any contradictions you can find anywhere to any of the quotes I attributed to him.....

  48. by HatetheSwamp on October 2, 2024 11:43 am

It don't work that way. You got busted. Live it.

  49. by Ponderer on October 2, 2024 12:29 pm

That's not the only way you don't work. A major portion of your brain doesn't either.

  50. by Indy! on October 2, 2024 7:04 pm

Somebody claimed Vance said "100s of thousands of Haitians" "invaded" Springfield(?) It was 20K people and the city invited them to come because the industrial based city was dying like a lot of rust belt cities that lost their factories or coal mines or whatever they made their money on thanks to progress.
