In a thread last month I mentioned that a major source of stolen guns are parked cars. I suggested that there should be some sort of electronic, air tag-like solution to prevent people from leaving guns in their cars. Also the parent(s) of these brothers should be prosecuted.

(WaPo)A Christmas Eve argument between teen brothers over who was getting more gifts ended in tragedy in Florida: A 14-year-old boy shot and killed his sister, who had tried to defuse the fight — and then was shot by his older brother, the local sheriff said.

Before the shooting, the 14-year-old posed on Snapchat with the weapon “he used to kill his sister,” [Sheriff] Gualtieri said, adding that people who knew the brothers told police that the teens “carried guns all the time.” Gualtieri said that obtaining a gun is “really easy” and that people are either buying stolen ones “cheap on the street” or taking them from unlocked vehicles. Earlier this year, he said, both brothers were arrested for “numerous car burglaries” in their area.

The people leaving their cars unlocked with guns inside should be charged as well. The article says the system was too lenient on these two idiots - true - but it's also far too lenient on gun owners. These mass shootings are far too often either a parent buying the kid a gun he's obviously not ready to own or the kid taking the gun from the parents - or some other irresponsible gun owner (oxymoron - they're all irresponsible).

Earlier this year, he said, both brothers were arrested for “numerous car burglaries” in their area

People who knew the brothers told police that the teens “carried guns all the time." Authorities said both teens, especially Damarcus who has a history of violence against school staff and law enforcement, has been let off the hook too easily by the juvenile justice system.

Standing in the kitchen, Damarcus Coley, 14, pulled out a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun and aimed it at his brother, 15-year-old Darcus Coley, threatening to shoot him in the head, Gualtieri said.

At about 1:45 p.m., Damarcus yelled threats at Baldwin and then shot her in the chest, Gualtieri said. The round went through her left arm before puncturing her lungs. At the time, Baldwin was holding her 10-month-old baby, who was not injured, Gualtieri said.

After hearing the gunshot, Darcus ran outside, screaming about how Damarcus had shot their sister.

Eight seconds after the fatal shot rang out, Darcus fired a round at his brother with his own .45 caliber pistol, Gualtieri said. The 15-year-old threw his gun in a neighbor’s yard and ran to a relative’s home in Clearwater, where deputies later arrested him, Gualtieri said. Darcus made statements about self-harm and was taken to a mental health facility.

Obviously, there are four morons in this story. The two thugs (14 and 15 years old) that did the shoots with "assumed" illegal guns from prior crimes (see above). The one that started the thread, and the one who then was the first poster on the thread.

Admittingly, I looked into a couple more sources. No fault/no foul on curt. And both of you pulled out half facts in your responses to the murder. Both suspects were illegally packing pistols, using illegal guns, and they both had criminal records. People who knew the brothers told police that the teens “carried guns all the time." Authorities said both teens, especially Damarcus who has a history of violence against school staff and law enforcement, has been let off the hook too easily by the juvenile justice system.😱

In FL, like it is in EVERY OTHER STATE IN THE US, it's illegal for someone under 18 to purchase a gun (in some states 21 for a pistol). In addition, they both had criminal records, another no-go for guns. The two did not use their "parents" guns. They found them on their own and they each routinely carried their own.

If you want to blame someone, blame the juvenile justice system, and the schools. The innocent person in this equation was the only one killed. That's the sister. Hopefully, the other two will get charged as adults and do the time for the murder and attempted murder.

Below are the crime stats for largo. In a nutshell, it's pretty much ran by the gangs in the area. Lots of rapes, break-ins, assaults, blahblahblah...
Crime in Largo research summary. Based on the most recently available data released October 17, 2023, we found the following about crime in Largo:

with "assumed" illegal guns from prior crimes (see above). —-OD

Nobody said or assumed besides you they were illegal guns. Except for the fact they Almost certainly stole the guns which were not properly secured in a car. As I’ve said previously, stolen guns by definition are in the hands of criminals.

The Sheriff also pointed to that, and the neighbors said they routinely carried.
And the rest of that I agree with.

I also marvel at the ease in which they murdered each other. This was their family. Yes, they were "mad" but didn't have a blood feud like a rival gang or whatever. AND they were 14 and 15 years old.

  5. by Indy! on December 27, 2023 6:17 pm

Where do you think they got that from, OD? Maybe from the non-stop proliferation of guns, gun culture and the ease at which they and their friends can get guns in the USA as opposed to actual civilized countries?

  6. by oldedude on December 27, 2023 7:36 pm
Maybe from other stolen guns that were also illegal gangster guns they finally recovered?
You still believe that "guns" are the problem. Two women just got stabbed and are in hospital because of some asshole who wanted all whites dead. Justify that.

My view is that we should make murder illegal. That will fix the problem.

  7. by Ponderer on December 28, 2023 6:19 am

After all is said and done, the remedy is clear. We need a lot more guns in the hands of everybody. If all their neighbors had guns, they could have come over there and shot that brother before he could have shot his sister.

MORE GUNS!!! WE NEED MORE GUNS!!! THERE JUST AREN'T ENOUGH GUNS!!!

Funny I've never heard of a kid bringing a knife to school and killing and entire classroom of children or a guy taking a knife into a movie theater and wounding 30 people with it or a guy taking his knife into a Las Vegas hotel and killing 60 or so people watching a country music concert across the street.

That might be the 15 y/o's defense. He was acting to keep his brother from killing others.

You also didn't read anything I posted, did you (as usual). They were illegal guns, in the hands of under-aged felons (assuming they did break into cars).
What is YOUR thought on how to correct this problem. And making guns illegal is a stupid idea, BTW. No one with any sense at all thinks that can happen.

I still think that if we put an age limit on buying guns, not allow people with criminal felony or domestic violence convictions, or drug abusers buy them, that would be one way. The other is to make murder illegal.

That should give you a start. And since you and indy are the biggest whiners about this, maybe you can come up with something together,

The schools knew these two were bad to begin with, the justice system allowed them to continue without repercussions. My guess is the Tampa cops knew them by name and face.
