A former prisoner’s story of mistreatment at the hands of Ron DeSantis made headlines. But The New York Times found no evidence to back it up.
Nearly a year ago, as Ron DeSantis’s political stock was rising, a former Guantánamo Bay detainee came forward with a stunning claim: Before he was Florida’s governor, as a young Navy lawyer, Mr. DeSantis had taken part in a forced feeding of a hunger striker at the notorious American prison, and laughed as he did so.
The detainee, Mansoor Adayfi, said he was tied to a chair, crying and screaming as tubes were shoved down his throat and cases of the dietary supplement Ensure were pumped into his stomach.
As the ordeal drew to an end, Mr. Adayfi added, he was approached by Mr. DeSantis and, “he said, ‘You should eat.’ I threw up in his face. Literally on his face.”

by oldedude on September 24, 2023 12:31 pm OMFG! A scumbag at Gitmo lied! That's impossible!
snicker. sheepdung. snicker.
by Curt_Anderson on September 24, 2023 1:35 pm Wait...you're trusting the New York Times report?
by oldedude on September 24, 2023 7:55 pm No, I'm saying that some GITMO azzhole lied! and that's (not) a surprise. That's what they're taught in their training in case they "go gitmo." These are the biggest assholes in the world. They spread their (literal) shit everywhere in their rooms and call it "abusive." then throw piss on the guards just because they know they can do it without retaliation. Most of these assholes are carrying STDs. They are the same assholes that share in the human sex trafficking.
The guy we were looking for putting a 13mm (1/2") drill bit that he used on childrens' brains ended up. He should have been thrown out of the aircraft on the way over at 40,000'. Let the fukking sharks have him. Alive.
These are not human beings. (read line again).
They are a bunch of sociopaths all in one wing of a prison.
by oldedude on September 24, 2023 9:38 pm I also don't really understand why you, of all people, would bring up there was NO EVIDENCE of wrongdoing? Did you come back to the curt we used to know? WTFO? really?
by Curt_Anderson on September 24, 2023 10:17 pm I had heard the accusations about Gitmo and DeSantis. Since I have no intention of voting for DeSantis, I didn't pay much attention to it. I don't recall, but the accusation might have been posted here. Now, in the interest of fairness, it's good to report the debunking of the story.
Now I wonder what enemy of DeSantis pushed this story. It's not accident that it was reported. I remember Trump pushing the story that DeSantis, as a teacher, partied with his high school students. Not sure that's true or not.
by oldedude on September 25, 2023 5:36 am This reminds me of another presidential candidate. Except that one was charged with colluding with Russia, had the buy-in of the IC & DOJ. Everyone on the other side knew it was BS but was part and party to the lie. Now those same people are still knowingly using that lie as their basis for still hating the candidate. Oh. It was paid for by the opposition candidate.
I think it's interesting the NYT (after buying off on the above-mentioned lie), actually looked into this. Or maybe they knew it all along and since DeSantis' campaign is in the crapper is now not useful to them. So they make it sound like they were the folks that came out as "the good guys" to rebuild their less than stellar reputation.
by Curt_Anderson on September 25, 2023 8:38 am OD,
Actually, the New York Times never reported the story. The accusations were featured in articles first in The Miami Herald and then The Washington Post. Both reports noted that the claims were not verified.
by oldedude on September 25, 2023 11:47 am Right. Again, you still think these things are happenstance. They just materialize out of thin air. Of course, you're still a belieber in the trumpster collusion story. So there's that. I stand by what I said.
