The COVID-19 pandemic is contributing to a significant decline in democratic values across the globe as many countries have taken aggressive and authoritarian steps to attempt to curb the virus.

If you haven't been living under a rock for the past two years, that's probably not much of a surprise. Still, a new report from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, a global nonprofit based in Sweden, offers a comprehensive look at the worrying trend of democratic erosion—a trend that has been helped along by the pandemic even though its roots go deeper...

A number of democratic countries—the report specifically mentions the United States in this section—have implemented COVID measures "that were disproportionate, illegal, indefinite or unconnected to the nature of the emergency," according to the IIDEA report. Those include travel restrictions and the use of "emergency powers that sometimes sidelined parliaments."

The last two years have indeed been littered with examples of previously unheard-of government powers on display in the U.S. That includes everything from statewide lockdowns in which governors decreed which businesses were "essential" to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with the backing of both the Trump and Biden administrations, making it nearly impossible for property owners to evict deadbeat tenants. It took until this month for the U.S. to reopen its border with Canada for supposedly "nonessential" travel, even though there was probably no good justification for closing the border in the first place.

And you big bro luvin Blue MAGA progressives have belittled those of us who have been trying to remind you that this country has a Bill of Rights!

It stuns me how quickly the US would become Nazi Germany if progressives had their way.

One reason the GOP will win big in 022 is that many Americans are becoming libertarian as a reaction to authoritarian Dem solutions and the GOP is the most practical solution.

Which of our Bill Of Rights are being violated, Bill?

Being that elderly people have been by far the demographic that's been hit the hardest by COVID to the degree that vaccine efficacy rates for them have been shown to be significantly lower than for younger people, I'm interested in why you would want to place your ideas on freedom above their lives.

Btw the Nazis exterminated 6 million people. COVID protocols have saved countless lives.

Sheeeeeeeeeesh, Donna, that was a pretty verbose post. Bahahahahahahaha! But, did you actually say anything? Bahahahahahahaha, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

One Bill of Rights right that has been absolutely trampled is the Free Exercise of Religion right.

And, yikes! Freedom of assembly? Oy vey! Do you not know this?

I'm not placing anyone's freedoms over anyone's life? I'm merely observing that this is a land of freedom, something that you and your ilk oppose...as the article has demonstrated.

You're a drama queen. No one is trampling on your freedom to practice your religion. When you say stupid things like that, you trivialize real religious persecution.

As you know, few rights come without restrictions, especially during emergencies, and there's plenty of legal precedent.

    Donna,

What deranged universe do you live in!!!!!?

The Supreme Court issued two rulings shooting down blue state restrictions on church attendance during the pandemic.

You really don't seem to care about anyone's rights but your own, do you!!!!!

  5. by Donna on November 26, 2021 8:20 am
That's because the Supreme Court has been taken over by Christian nutcases.

  6. by HatetheSwamp on November 26, 2021 10:22 am

Donna, that stinks of Christophobia. And, be that as it may, cases of religious oppression in violation of the First Amendment made it to the Supreme Court. In spite of the myth you hold on to... authoritarians have infringed on First Amendment religious freedom.

I know that in the past, I accused isle of being unamerican and there was only a little tip of my tongue in my cheek when I wrote that. I'm not entirely joking in accusing you, too, of not embracing the spirit of the American endeavor.

You take our freedoms very lightly, unless they're freedoms that benefit you personally.

    You fascists blow me away.

    Let freedom ring!!!!!

False. I'm not afraid of Jesus, but I find pampered Christian snowflakes like yourself who've never experienced a whit of persecution annoying.

The first step in the kind of authoritarianism Hate fears started when the restaurant owners told their employees that they had to wash their hands .

    HtS,
I am guessing that you didn't realize that the report you cited looked at measures of democracy and authoritarianism only through the end of 2020. In other words, the January 6th insurrection was not covered nor was any day of the Biden presidency. The authoritarian tendencies mentioned in the report happened under Trump's watch.

The Global State of Democracy Indices provide quantitative data on democratic quality for the same countries, based on 28 indicators of democracy up until the end of 2020.

Significantly, the United States, the bastion of global democracy, fell victim to authoritarian tendencies itself, and was knocked down a significant number of steps on the democratic scale.

Electoral integrity is increasingly being questioned, often without evidence, even in established democracies. The former US President Donald Trump’s baseless allegations during the 2020 US presidential election have had spillover effects, including in Brazil, Mexico, Myanmar and Peru, among others.

Disputes about electoral outcomes are on the rise, including in established democracies. A historic turning point came in 2020–2021 when former President Donald Trump questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election results in the United States. Baseless allegations of electoral fraud and related disinformation undermined fundamental trust in the electoral process, which culminated in the storming of the US Capitol building in January 2021.

The report, which draws on expert surveys as well as empirical evidence including 116 democratic indicators from 1975 to late 2020 from 165 countries, classifies each country as democratic (including “backsliding”), “hybrid,” or authoritarian according to a range of democratic indicators.
