Stephen Colbert has blasted CBS, claiming that the network has barred him from airing his interview with Texas State Rep. James Talarico. He was also allegedly told that he couldn't even mention not having Talarico on. Of course, that didn't stop him.

"Because my network clearly doesn't want us to talk about this, let's talk about this," Colbert quipped.

The Late Show host spent around eight minutes giving audiences a peek behind the curtain, explaining that CBS' lawyers told them "in no uncertain terms" that Talarico could not be on the broadcast. CBS' mandate was apparently due to FCC chair Brendan Carr stating that he's considering eliminating the talk show exemption to the equal time rule. Under this rule, if a program on radio or broadcast television interviews a candidate during an election, they have to do the same with all their opponents as well.

Carr has claimed that removing the talk show exemption would be an attempt to reduce partisanship in broadcast. However, Colbert noted that the FCC chair has said he's not interested in applying the same pressure to radio shows which are traditionally right-leaning.

"I think you are motivated by partisan purposes yourself. Sir, ya smelt it 'cause ya dealt it. You are Dutch ovening America's airwaves," said Colbert. "Let's just call this what it is. Donald Trump's administration wants to silence anyone who says anything bad about Trump on TV, because all Trump does is watch TV. He's like a toddler with too much screen time."

Colbert also pointed out that, significantly, Carr hasn't actually eliminated the exemption yet, merely stated that he's thinking of doing it.

"He hasn't done away with it yet, but my network is unilaterally enforcing it as if he had," said Colbert. "I want to assure you, this decision is for purely financial reasons."

Fortunately, you can still watch Colbert's interview with Talarico, just not on broadcast television. The segment has been uploaded to the Late Show's YouTube page, though Colbert was banned from linking directly to it. As of writing, the video's top comment states, "The FCC not wanting me to watch this made me want to watch this."

I'm not a legal expert who clerked at the Supreme Court, nor am I currently a prof at an Ivy League law school...

... however, it appears to pb that CBS might very well have had to offer air time to Talarico's opponents in the Dem Primary and whoever it is who wins the GOP Primary.

But, as I say, you're the legal expert.

"... however, it appears to pb that CBS might very well have had to offer air time to Talarico's opponents in the Dem Primary and whoever it is who wins the GOP Primary." -pedophile's bitch

Not as the law now exists, they don't. Talk shows have been exempted from that law, and if you watched Colbert explain it, you would know that CBS reacted this way because FCC Chair Carr said he was looking into changing the law to include talk shows that set CBS's lawyers' on fire.

Talarico mentions that this is all because Trump and his regime are terrified that Texas is going to flip. So the administrations motives are pretty blatant.

  4. by HatetheSwamp on February 17, 2026 7:43 am

"Not as the law now exists, they don't."

See, now this is why it's to our advantage to have a former Supreme Court clerk and current Ivy League law school prof as one of our posters.

"... and if you watched Colbert explain it, you would know that CBS reacted this way because FCC Chair Carr said he was looking into changing the law to include talk shows that set CBS's lawyers' on fire."

C'mon. Gimme a break, man! I didn't clerk at the Supreme Court and I don't teach in a law school but even I know that bureaucrats can't make or change laws. Only Congress can do that.

That video is exactly why the Ds are a pack of LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSERS. 10 minutes of a religious guy telling us his version of religion is better than the rightwing version (okay - granted) - but religion in politics... yours, mine, ours, theirs... is still RELIGION IN POLITICS. Save it for the chapel - EVERYONE. So 2/3s of the video was religion - him telling us his version of what Jesus wanted and how great his magic man is... then a couple more bones to the few remaining Ds in the country "it's top vs. bottom!!!" (APPLAUSE SIGN LIGHTS) and as always - absolutely no policy whatsoever.

15 minutes of my life down the drain. It's why I'm never voting D again.

  8. by Donna on February 17, 2026 10:27 am

? Trump is scared to death of Talarico.

  9. by Indy! on February 17, 2026 10:40 am

That was an edgy interview for Colbert. CBS wouldn't let him broadcast it. If that doesn't tell you how deep the Ds are in the weeds - nothing will. It's the same question it's always been... where is the policy? If it's Epstein Class vs us poor folks - where is the policy to address that?

  10. by HatetheSwamp on February 17, 2026 10:50 am

How could Talarico possibly be a threat to the OrangeTurd?

  12. by Indy! on February 17, 2026 5:53 pm

There was absolutely no reason not to air that video. Just more of Stephen Colbert's fake "progressive" nonsense. He tells Trump jokes, collects millions for it and thinks that makes him a man of the People or something. He's no different than Bill Maher. Those types of "comedians" are allowed on TV by the Epstein Class because they pose absolutely no danger to the oligarchy in any way at all. The truth is they work for them.

  13. by HatetheSwamp on February 18, 2026 3:28 am

Based on the way CBS has clarified the situation, it seems to me that Colbert is nuthin more than a racist who refused to provide equal time to Talarico's BIPOC opponent Jasmine Crockett... whom Talarico will almost certain face in a runoff.

  14. by oldedude on February 18, 2026 7:11 am
It seems the biggest issue is the FCC is interfering with what late-night is doing. The counter issue is the FCC (and most other "agencies" are losing power under trumpster (for better or worse). I think for the agencies the kingdom building eras are gone, as trumpster promised in his second election.

This "should" be good news for Colbert and the rest of late night "entertainment." They're not news shows. There is no requirement for comedians to "fair minded." No big deal according to Article 3 and the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. Any future federal net neutrality rules would require clear congressional authorization, which is unlikely in the near term.[1]

The US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled on Jan 1, 2026, that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) did not have legal authority when it reinstated net neutrality rules (May 2024).[2]

So I'm really not sure why CBS would have their panties in a wad, unless it's just to censor Colbert. Either that or the owners thought it best for ratings. Not really sure about that, as CBS does more sales in their plethora of series' than Colbert alone.

I say let him do his thing.

  18. by Indy! on February 18, 2026 11:10 am

You know why you losers keep saying "I hate everyone"? It's not because I hate everyone - in fact, I don't hate any of you - it's because in this world you're not allowed to disagree or be displeased with anything that's popular on your side. I'm an independent for a reason - because the Rs are working for the oligarchy and the Ds are helping them. They are the same thing in reality - the same team, only one side kinda, sorta pretending they're not. So when I point out what a total fraud Colbert is with this poseur lightweight "progressive" who does more preaching than politicking? It burns the Ds gristle. Donna - a classic, old school, let's go "protest" in the streets to make nothing happen sees me EXPOSING one of her heroes - she gets mad. Just like when I expose OD's failed army or Brown Short's deep, undying, never wavering affection for Kamala and sticking his nose in Trump's ass. You guys are the ones who got us in this position we're in right now - not me. So if you're mad? Be mad at yourselves - not me.

    Peace out. 😘

I have thoroughly and completely not watched any of Bennie Johnson's video in its entirety that pedophile's bitch linked to.

So, all I have to go on is the fact that pedophile's bitch thinks he's right, but that's all I need to know to be confident that Bennie Johnson and CBS are lying.

If this comes down to a he said/they said thing, then I believe Colbert. Absolutely. He's an actual Christian, not a MAGA Hat "Christian". So, it's entirely and extremely likely that he isn't lying.

  23. by Ponderer on February 18, 2026 5:05 pm

    You're right. I can't be. And I'm not.

    But you certainly can be.

Scott Jennings gots nothing. He's also lying. And he was projecting flaming racism to boot! Such a MAGA Hat! Asserting that two white guys conspired to hurt a black woman. What textbook MAGA Hat bullshit. Colbert would likely be fine with doing an interview with Crockett. Although, Trump might well want to stop that interview too.

pedophile's bitch, you keep getting willfully suckered by these MAGA Hat propagandists who know that anything they tell you, you will believe. They need show you no proof, no evidence, no nothing because you will swallow anything they pour down your ravenously gullible gullet. The rest of the country isn't so gullible.

I believe Colbert. I explained why. Until some actual evidence is presented to the contrary, there is no rational reason to believe that Colbert and Talarico are lying and every reason that the White House is lying, playing one side against the other to cover Trump's voluminous and terrified ass in this.

  24. by Ponderer on February 18, 2026 5:06 pm

So... pedophile's bitch... Are the only things that you are going to present as your "evidence" going to be nothing but MAGA Hats saying that Colbert and Talarico lied? You really don't have to bother if that's all you're going to have.

  25. by Indy! on February 18, 2026 5:46 pm

  29. by HatetheSwamp on February 19, 2026 3:10 am

    po,

    From AI:

CBS issued a statement on Tuesday, February 17, asserting that the show "was not prohibited" from airing the interview. Instead, they claim they provided "legal guidance" that broadcasting the segment could trigger the FCC’s equal-time rule, which would require CBS to offer equivalent airtime to Talarico’s political opponents.

    So there, dude.

  30. by Ponderer on February 19, 2026 4:37 am

Yeah, you already said all that. And it's just as much nonsense as it was the first time. Because you got nothing.

Rather than watch a video of even more people lying about what happened with no further proof, why don't you just stop trying to waste everyone's time and tell us what the new blockbuster evidence is that they supposedly provided in it that we haven't heard already?

If you can't provide it, it is therefore a foregone conclusion that you gots nothing.

  31. by Ponderer on February 19, 2026 4:58 am

Both Colbert and Talarico are real Christians. We know how easy it was for pedophile's bitch to wipe his ass with the teachings Jesus Christ, but he is absolutely wrong about how easy he thinks it is for real Christians to do that.

That's possibly the MAGA right's biggest failure. They always seem to think that everyone else is as corrupt, duplicitous, deceitful, disloyal, hypocritical, narcissistic, and immoral as they are.

  32. by HatetheSwamp on February 19, 2026 5:22 am

"Yeah, you already said all that. And it's just as much nonsense as it was the first time. Because you got nothing."

    Yeah. Me and AI.

I'm, at the same time, impressed and overwhelmed by your True Believer, Leap of Faith-ism. And, I don't get why you, in your subjectivity, have chosen to leap into this myth. It seems reasonable to believe the CBS version of the events. The CBS version of events comports with the long-standing FCC reality as well as the OrangeTurd reality...

And, you have to know that Chuckyou Schumer wants Crockett to lose the Primary. It's apparent that, if the Dems have any shot of taking the Texas Senate seat in 026, they need a white, preferably male, candidate.

In this case, what you're choosing to believe in comes straight from the preferences and prejudices that you bring with you to every moment of your life.

So, po, based on what, in the real world, causes you to believe in Colbert!!!!!?

  33. by Ponderer on February 19, 2026 6:00 am

"It seems reasonable to believe the CBS version of the events." -pedophile's bitch

I can see how it would. To you. You never find anything too unreasonable or too illogical to believe if it supports, defends, excuses, or champions Trump and his Reich's agenda somehow. At the drop of a hat. It barely even touches the inside of your mouth; you instantly swallow it with such fervor.

Were all of CBS's executives in on the call or the meeting between Colbert and the CBS lawyers to know exactly what was said to Colbert?

CBS is in bed with Trump now. All bets are off. There is no reason to imagine that CBS/Paramount are not now marching in lockstep with whatever Trump wants of them and saying whatever they need to in order to move The Trump Reich's agenda along.

  34. by HatetheSwamp on February 19, 2026 6:13 am

But po, but po. CBS just paid out $16,000,000 in 60 MINUTES lawsuit. Their side of the story fits that reality. And, Jasmine Crockett is telling the same story.

And, please, again. Splain why you believe the Colbert story.

  35. by myce on February 19, 2026 6:23 am

One way or another, the D's are turning the humiliating cuckoldry of CBS around and making it work for them, and they are going to take that seat.

  36. by Ponderer on February 19, 2026 6:25 am

I've already explained it. Colbert and Talarico are Christians. Men with a sense of honor and duty that I have never seen either of them stray from. Basically, I trust them.

You think that it's reasonable to trust the CBS story...? There is nothing more reasonable than expecting such fascist, anti-freedom of speech behavior from Trump and his fascist goons.

CBS/Paramount is a major corporation with the morals of a three-card monte dealer. Whatever serves their bottom line is what they will do. And if lying about what they told Colbert while fellating Donald Trump is best for their bottom line, then so be it. Couldn't be a more reasonable scenario.

And $16 million is probably the annual budget for Post-it notes for a corporate giant like that. I'm sure that Trump chose that amount carefully. He didn't want it to be such a large amount that CBS would think it worth fighting.

  37. by HatetheSwamp on February 19, 2026 6:34 am

    myce,

Every even numbered year, progressives and Dems bubble with optimism that this is the year that state-wide seats in Texas flip Dem. So far, that's yet to happen. But, keep a good thought.

I ain't HatetheSwamp for no reason. I'm convinced that this stunt is the brainchild of the Dem establishment, especially, Colbert's close personal friend, Chuck Schumer. DC Dems are scared to death that the BIPOC woman will grab the nomination. It's this sort of manipulation of the vote, from both sides, that makes me HatetheSwamp.

    You're welcome to join me.

OR... if you have a link to that whole Jasmine Crockett interview and not just that out-of-context bit you seem to think is so damning.

  40. by HatetheSwamp on February 19, 2026 7:58 am

There was no "interview," per se. She spoke to the press, by the sound of it, somewhere near an airport. She, very simply, said that the network believed that Colbert would have to interview her, too, if the Talarico interview appeared on air, and Colbert didn't want to interview her, hence, the YouTube thing, over which the FCC has no authority.

HatetheSwamp, you posted a clip of the same interview that I posted earlier, where you suggested that I am stoopid because I said she's not pissed. We have more important things to be pissed about, like ICE terrorists terrorizing communities, and Trump's tariff policies putting people out of business, for example.

  45. by Ponderer on February 19, 2026 12:29 pm

Yeah, myce. She wasn't pissed. It didn't even sound like she would have been likely to go on Colbert if she'd been asked.

We can't really blame Trump and the MAGA Hats (there's a band name for ya!) for this tactic of trying to stoke enmity between Democratic opponents of each other. With all the civil wars and self-defeating chaos going on in the MAGAverse presently, it would have been impossible for them not to try to stir some of the same turmoil up on the Dem side of things, given a sixteenth of a chance to.

    Valiant effort, I say.

  46. by HatetheSwamp on February 19, 2026 12:47 pm

Ole pb's impressed with the way Crockett has handled this. Do yinz think she's happy about that stunt the smoke-filled room pulled with Colbert and St Senator White Bread? So far, indications are that she's leading in early voting. If she's going to win in November, she can't burn bridges with the Party who will decide which races it's going to dump money into.

And, think about it. Dem polls must be showing that St Senator White Bread must be in trouble. Why else pull the Colbert stunt? Why, indeed!!!!!?

  47. by Ponderer on February 19, 2026 1:04 pm

Yeah. She is smart enough not to give the MAGARepublicans what they were after with all this nonsense.

She's ahead in the polls, but there's a ways to go yet. If she's the candidate instead of Talarico, that's fine. Either of them will wipe the floor with whatever rich, white, male, Trump-flunky MAGAGOP they're gonna have as their candidate.

I've been really rather elated with her work in the House. She'd be pretty missed there.
