The United States government is no longer able to protect us from real hazards, such as flash floods, because it’s shifting funds to fake hazards, such as a non-existent immigrant crime wave.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been stripped down so much it can barely respond to emergencies, yet it’s funding detention centers such as “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Florida Everglades.

The National Weather Service’s San Angelo office, responsible for some of the areas hardest hit by Friday’s flooding, is missing a senior hydrologist, staff forecaster, and meteorologist.

The Weather Service’s nearby San Antonio office, which covers other areas hit by the floods, is missing a warning coordination meteorologist and science officer who are supposed to work with local emergency managers to plan for floods, including when and how to warn local residents and help them evacuate.

The office’s warning coordination meteorologist left on April 30, after taking the early retirement package offered by Musk’s DOGE to reduce the number of federal employees.

At both offices, the vacancy rate is roughly double what it was when Trump returned to the White House in January.

It’s the same across much of the federal government. Callers can’t get through to Social Security offices. Hazardous waste sites and drinking water facilities aren’t being inspected. National Park services have been scaled back. There aren’t enough air-traffic controllers to safely guide takeoffs and landings at the nation’s major airports.

Trump’s newly-enacted Big Ugly Bill will take funds out of Medicaid and food stamps. For what? To finance another giant tax cut for the rich, along with 10,000 more ICE agents and a gulag of detention camps.

I’d like to believe that this worsening catastrophe may eventually have positive consequences.

For one thing, it could help us appreciate what our government is for. And why we need a competent and effective civil service rather than Trump lackeys and sycophants.

It will also push every American to choose sides, between a government that protects us from real dangers or a police state, between American democracy or Trump fascism.

Some have already been forced to choose — managing partners at law firms, a few university presidents, some top editors, federal judges, and many government employees.

But as the axe of Trump fascism comes down harder on America, the rest of us will have to choose.

We will demand a democracy that works for the people.

As we become unprotected from corporate malfeasance, climate change, fraud, ill-health, horrific accidents, and toxic chemicals — all so that big corporations and their top executives and major shareholders can make even bigger profits — more of us will take a stand.

As the nation becomes a police state with an internal army and a gulag of prison camps, more of us will speak out.

It will be a national reckoning.

It may be our last best hope.

-Robert Reich

Y'know when Reich was in the Clinton administration, I thought he was a person of reason who did a bang-up job, but in recent years, I rank his moronic TDS hatism up there with the NeverTrumpers of The Bulwark. Reich may even be worse.

The only road to eutopia is the one paved by Big Brother!

    Two words, Donna: $37,000,000,000,000!

I wondered how much the layoffs adversely affected the forecasts in Texas. Kristi Noem is preemptively blaming outdated equipment. Funny how that "outdated equipment" was providing accurate and early forecast before Trump took office.

My sense is that Reich is doing what $#!tler did when he proclaimed that the bombing of Iran "obliterated" Iran's nuclear capabilities before the bombers had even returned to base.

It may be that, in time, Reich's contention proves to be correct but there's no way to know that in the moment...

... and, even then, there's the issue of the $37,000,000,000,000, eh!!!!!?

They are responsible for the dozens of flood-related deaths in Texas so far that could have been prevented with adequate warning as was available before this country came down with terminal Trump cancer.

    So I'd say pretty adversely.

For those, like HtS, who imagine that DOGE did America a huge economic favor by laying off government workers, including weather forecasters, they should hear Trump and GOP politicians. NOW they are pulling all the stops in looking for bodies and other post disaster efforts, with federal money no object.

First, My thoughts go out to all the families that have lost, and will lose friends and families in this.

I'm not assigning blame. Obviously, someone didn't get the memo.

Every state is required to have an "Emergency Operations Center." These vary from NYCs, that is the envy of most countries, with extremely knowledgeable persons in that seat for their particular job. To some I'm sure, that have part-timers that were just "smart" people.

In addition to that most states I've been in, have county-run EOCs. I would be willing to bet all the counties in Texas have them. This is where the real information and heads up should come. I do agree that I don't think anyone was actually telling people there would be 29' of water. That's as tall as donna's/po's house set on top of mine. And there's water beyond their ceiling, and my house is going to become a wreck dive. That's how many feet of water was there at high tide. If it's like FL, as indy and I have both said, "oh, it's a hurricane" or "Oh there's lightening" and really, neither one causes a lot of concern (unless you have kids in your pool).

I'm not going to venture who dropped the ball. That's not the question now, and there's enough blame for years of discussion.

The feds in the state have limited interaction with the state. That's part of the way our system is built. FEMA has to be requested by the state, and they'll historically take a week or two until they get established. No fault, no foul, it's just how they roll. That's why after the flooding in the Asheville area in particular said that FEMA needs to be a coordinating agency only. Things work smoother.

All civilian feds will be paid to the end of the fiscal year. So everyone is getting paid. Except for those choosing an immediate retirement.

As with all catastrophic flooding, that water is at best "non-potable" water. And even when the water's gone, it's nothing more than a trap of sewage, disease, dead things, trash and hazardous materials. There's nothing you can do about that. Getting good water is going to be a long time out. And the feds only "check" on the state, who check on the counties, who check on the businesses.

I think the state is the bigger issue here. I have a good feeling that where I'm at, we would have known in enough time to for people to get out of the flood zone. And that says a lot, when you live at 69' elevation. and with flooding of 30', that would take up at least 5mi of the almost 8mi to the coast.

Good lord Reich is comically out of touch. Where has he been the last 40 years? He's always been a useless D like Robert and Curt - but now...?

For one thing, it could help us appreciate what our government is for. And why we need a competent and effective civil service rather than Trump lackeys and sycophants.

It will also push every American to choose sides, between a government that protects us from real dangers or a police state, between American democracy or Trump fascism.

How could he not understand this is just another trip around the circle?

Reagan/Bush fuck things up, and because so many problems are left in their wake....

Clinton can only fix a few and gets the blame for the rest of the blowback, so...

George W. Smirk gets elected. He fucks things up so bad...

Obama gets elected but can only fix... ummm... nothing really, so...

Trump gets elected. He fucks things up so bad...

Biden gets elected, he can't fix everything either...

Trump gets elected again. he fucks things up so bad, Robert Reich writes...

For one thing, it could help us appreciate what our government is for. And why we need a competent and effective civil service rather than Trump lackeys and sycophants.

It will also push every American to choose sides, between a government that protects us from real dangers or a police state, between American democracy or Trump fascism.

And the Ds get another free trip to the WH they didn't earn and don't do anything except please Robert and Curt and then...

The next R looooooooooooooooooser gets elected.

In the end, we can believe one of two things...

    1) The Ds are the worst party ever when it comes to elections because they can't keep the absolute worst party on the planet out of the WH

    OR

    2) They are complicit and this is not a cycle - it's the plan.

  10. by meagain on July 6, 2025 2:54 pm
Trump's actions did affect the flooding damage. The early warning system is gone.

Climate change also played a partt, a big part in that it worsened the rainfall. I haven't seen an analysis, but it appears to me to be the same as in all major storms. They move more slowly as well as holding more water," thus, when it comes down, it does it harder and for longer.
