Maybe what OD probably MEANT to say was that America was TRANSFORMED into a meritocracy, the genesis of which traces back to government intervention in the economy in the early 1900's � taxation of the wealthy, relief programs, public ownership and infrastructure. For white males, that is. That transformation took some time to spread to other classes.

Of course, America never had its classes fully entrenched like some other nations. And let's be fair to early America � it was a product of its time. Things weren't much better elsewhere. But if you were born into a lower class back then, the idea that America was FOUNDED as a meritocracy is eye-roll inducing. If you were a woman, a non-white person, an immigrant, or openly/visibly LGBTQ, it's utterly laughable.

I know that America is the worst country in the world according to you. That includes Yemen, Congo, Egypt, Pakistan, and a lot of other countries. I didn't "mean" to say anything. I'm actually careful about word choice.

The colonies you hate so much just broke loose from a monarchy. Where the ability to move in society was impossible. If you were part of the monarchy, that's where your family stayed. Unless you really screwed up. If you were born poor, that's where your family stayed. Period. End of story. So in all the monarchies, the family was predestined.

You also forgot about the moves west. First through the Cumberland gap, then the western Great Lakes and into the Rockies. These were people that had very few "capitalists" looking over their shoulder.

An example. My fifth removed grandfather was taken out of Ireland and sold in the colonies (Louden county, VA) and bought his way out by being a silversmith. He never made it real big, but he was able to have a family that still exists today.

My paternal grandfather left Slovakia as a potato farming family under the serf system. He came the US is 1910. He was illiterate (serfs didn't go to any school, because that would allow them to read). All five of his children graduated from High School, and my dad got a master's degree in teaching.

So in hindsight, maybe we weren't up to your standard. I'd say we were at least equal to any other industrialized country, and better than many countries especially in Europe and the far East Asia.

It was only after World War 2 that anyone could "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and amount to anything other than being a farmer. In the mid-20th century, with a lot of hard work, you absolutely COULD become a "self-made man", but only after you took advantage of ...

* Your high school or college education that was publicly funded or paid for by your family

* The infrastructure that ssociety already had in place, such as public roads, clean water, food distribution and medical infrastructure

* Law enforcement and a legal system that could ensure you didn't get screwed over too bad in your business by unscrupulous contractors

* The stable currency and banking system already in place

* Oh, and it helps a lot if you had a good family with great connections that greased the skids as you got into your career and kept you out of the draft

I graduated HS because the Air Force wasn't taking anyone without a HS diploma. My first signing was Dec 74, I was on active-duty Mar 75. No deferment was necessary. So please don't ASSume shit about me.

It also is kind of funny, that any question I ask you about your "time" you "served" never gets answered. So until you do answer these questions, I get to create anything I want to. That you never served, you're a poser, and guilty of mocking the uniform. OR you did "serve," a got a general discharge (or lower) because you couldn't learn that your dungarees flap goes to the front.

Oh my... yet another HUGE mistake on the part of the military expert and DEFINITELY another lie...

The U.S. officially ended the draft on January 27, 1973 - but the last actual draft was on Dec. 7 1972. The authority to induct expired on June 30, 1973. Between that time and July 1980, there was NO REQUIREMENT to register for a (possible) draft. The requirement to register with Selective Service was reinstated in July 1980. The reinstatement affected my generation - I even had one friend who high tailed it to Canada because he thought the reinstatement meant we were going to war soon (he was kinda right).

So now Queen Welfare has a real problem because NONE of her info jibes with reality. As I've been saying for quite awhile - I highly doubt she ever served.
