Trump announced a trade deal with the UK. Apparently Americans will be able to buy Bentleys and Rolls Royces at a better price. Not sure what other British-made items Americans might have on their shopping lists. English Breakfast tea?

Trump also said details will be announced later. The devil is in the details. Until the details are worked out is it really a deal?

So, it's true. TDS does kill brain cells.

  2. by meagain on May 8, 2025 11:57 am
It hasn't killed yours. That lonely single-celled thing in your head is still clattering around.

  3. by Curt_Anderson on May 8, 2025 12:20 pm
Trump voters like HtS are the real sufferers of TDS. What is more deranged than believing Trump's overhyping and accepting Trump's under delivering? The average consumer and voter cares about items you might buy at Walmart. I don't believe Walmart carries a lot UK items. Here's the FOX News take on the trade deal: what's in it for us?

Trump referred to Britain as the United States’ “oldest” ally, a claim France might object to.

  5. by HatetheSwamp on May 8, 2025 12:33 pm

    Curt,

OD and pb have offered more concrete and specific critiques of what Trump has done since his landslide victory in November than all of the rest of you combined. We ain't locksteppers. I think I can speak for OD in noting that we voted against the Day Drinker.

And, pb was denouncing tariffs long before election day.

Having said that, the way the trade deal will work with the UK is that US will export to the UK more easily than before. It's hard for ole pb to see much bad.

As I type this, the DJIA is up more than 1% for the day. That's not bad.

"It's hard for ole pb to see much bad." ---HtS

It's hard for me to see much good and nothing that will benefit me or other average Americans. Plus as I said and Trump admits the details haven't been worked out. So it isn't really a deal until all is finalized.

Also, Trump insisted that the reason for all these tariffs is that that other countries are "ripping us off" since we have a trade deficit with countries like China. We have a trade surplus with the UK, that is they buy more American goods than we buy English goods. So what is being accomplished again?!

The reason the stock market rebounded slightly is because it appears that Trump is willing to accept a vague, unspecified agreement as a "deal" and declare victory. Also since Trump is willing make a "big" announcement from the Oval Office over a nothing-burger, it's obvious that Trump is desperate to make a deal with any countries.

  7. by HatetheSwamp on May 8, 2025 1:36 pm

    Curt,

I think the natural level of the stock market today is higher than the current level. Trump's handling of the economy has been chaotic at the very best. Investors are looking for any reason at all to see a bright economic future. Trump gave them the slightest little reason today.

This agreement, with our closest important ally is, essentially meaningless. IMO.

    HtS,
Your post above is correct. Is that what they are saying on FOX News too?

  9. by HatetheSwamp on May 8, 2025 2:27 pm

I'm just now hopping back and forth between Jake Tapper and The Five.

But, c'mon, gimme a break, man! You're our reporter on all things Fox.

  10. by Curt_Anderson on May 8, 2025 2:57 pm
I take it from the responses above (and lack thereof) that I am not missing anything about Trump's "big trade deal announcement". It's a nothing-burger.

  11. by HatetheSwamp on May 8, 2025 3:12 pm

    Curt,

Between the two of us, you're the world-class economist, I guess.

You seem to want me to defend Trump's tariffs. Huh?

  12. by Indy! on May 8, 2025 3:16 pm

You defend him on everything else - so what are you waiting for, Brown Shorts?

From Lead, answering curt- OD and pb have offered more concrete and specific critiques of what Trump has done since his landslide victory in November than all of the rest of you combined. OD and pb have offered more concrete and specific critiques of what Trump has done since his landslide victory in November than all of the rest of you combined.

And our critiques are not based on hatred of the person. It's based on the action, or the "character" of the person. Would I have any politician as a "friend?" My guess is no.

Back to your next point about degrading trumpster because you weren't let in on the nuts and bolts. First, there were a lot of people that will be out of work in England in the next few days if some tentative agreement wasn't made. So trumpster threw them a bone. Deere and caterpillar have a wide open market in GB, those two companies, and farmers are all hopeful about how these turn out. And having trumpster throw you a solid, is like the don of the mob throwing you a bone. You will pay. I don't think trumpster will screw them over, and they'll pay their dues to be in the club.

Link us to one of those times where you or Brown Shorts criticized Trump on something.

    Guaranteed you wimp out again.

Deere and caterpillar have a wide open market in GB... ---OD

That may or not be true, but John Deere and Caterpillar stocks slumped today. I guarantee you that most Americans don't care if Deere and Caterpillar make a few sales or not. Where is the tariff benefit that Trump touted as a candidate?

A month ago HtS posted "Over 50 nations want to start trade talks with US after tariffs, Trump officials say". See what I mean by MAGA takes Trump seriously and literally? You can see for yourself who here believed and who disbelieved Trump's announcement about the "50 countries" in the post below.

The balance of trade between the UK and the USA is almost even. UK figures show a small surplus, and US figures are that they have a small surplus. Total trade is quite significant.

However, Trump in his economic ignorance, does not understand that the balance of Payments has the UK with a very large surplus. That is what is important and he can't do anything about it.

  17. by HatetheSwamp on May 9, 2025 5:17 am

    meagain,

Speaking on behalf of the whole Western world, we all wish that Trump was as smart as are you.

I guarantee you that most Americans don't care if Deere and Caterpillar make a few sales or not.

Are you off your meds today?

Perhaps if you were working for one of those companies you might care. Or if you actually cared about US workers. This goes back to the liberal saying "fuck manufacturing jobs" and "keep everyone poor so they suck the tit of the government."

And instead of whining like a little b, I looked up to get facts instead of using hatred, fantasy, and inuendo. There are a half dozen other references that are built on the Whitehouse Scope Notes and notes the UK government put out.

The agreement is expected to open the British market to various American products, including beef and ethanol, while maintaining a 10% tariff on most UK imports

This trade deal will significantly expand U.S. market access in the UK, creating a $5 billion opportunity for new exports for U.S. farmers, ranchers, and producers. This includes more than $700 million in ethanol exports and $250 million in other agricultural products, like beef.

    From OD's AP link:
The pact provides some support for President Donald Trump’s arguments that his steep tariffs could lead to agreements that open up overseas markets. But economists’ initial reactions were cool, with many noting that the United Kingdom isn’t a large enough trading partner for the U.S. to really move the needle for the U.S. economy.

“It’s more symbolic than economic,” Beata Caranci, chief economist at the bank TD Economics, said in an email. “What we have learned is that these initial announcements are going to be more fine-tuning around the edges and easing of pain points, rather than an end to the trade war.”

curt= so you're being a little bitch in the negotiation? Right? You can actually look back (OMFG you're allowed on economic sites which you know nothing about. Jussayin...

Funny - not funny - that neither Brown Shorts or OD could come up with a single time they criticized their orange master.
