It will also reduce interest payments. However, it will be inflationary and on the scale of the American economy would lead to a trade war.
I tried to discover whether America owns much debt of other countries in the form of foreign-issued bonds but Google does not recognise the possibility for some reason. No matter how I phrase it, it will only answer with the quantities of American Treasury bonds these countries own. The reason for knowing is that it would increase the payments for foreign-issued bonds.
