I am going through our household expenditures with a DOGE axe. So far I have uncovered:
Wilted lettuce in the refrigerator and other past date food items.
My wife left an extra 15% beyond the stated price of a restaurant meal.
My wife bought new clothes when her old clothes could have been patched or mended.
She donated money to a charity Grr!
We have various subscriptions to publications and streaming services in which we avail ourselves to only a fraction of their articles/shows.

And I just started. Next Spring I am going after our garden flowers.

Our personal financial situation could turn precarious under this reckless, self-serving regime. So if I were a sociopath like the Mump and its co-conspirators, I'd axe the $38/min we donate to St. Jude's and Shriners' childrens hospitals, take our dog back to the shelter, and raise the rent on our housemate who we've been helping.

  2. by Donna on February 10, 2025 11:03 am

LOL, I meant $38/mon, not min!

  3. by Donna on February 10, 2025 11:17 am

And we can save 15% to 20% on our meals out by never leaving a tip! And we can save even more by simply ordering one meal and splitting it!

  4. by Indy! on February 10, 2025 1:13 pm

15%? Your wife is a cheapskate, Curt.

  5. by Curt_Anderson on February 10, 2025 1:53 pm
    Indy,
Although I have already severely chastised her for her profligate ways, in her defense Oregon is not a cheapskate state like Florida.

In Oregon, the minimum wage for tipped employees is the same as the state's minimum wage, plus any tips they receive. Oregon does not allow employers to count tips towards the minimum wage, so employers must pay tipped employees their full minimum wage plus any tips.
Minimum wage by region in Oregon
Portland metro area: $15.95 per hour
    Standard statewide: $14.70 per hour
    Nonurban counties: $13.70 per hour

The minimum wage for tipped employees in Florida is $9.98 per hour. This means that employers can count up to $3.02 per hour of an employee's tips towards meeting the minimum wage.

  6. by Indy! on February 10, 2025 4:37 pm

It's always easy to tell which people have worked for tips and which have not...

    Okay - the math...

$50 for dinner (just had dinner with the folks - $73, not $50)

    5% of $50 = $2.50 (20% instead of 15% - and I often tip more than 20%)

    5 dinners served in an hour x $2.50 = $12.50

    $9.98 + $12.50 = $22.48 per hour.

    $22.48 - $15.95 (the highest Oregon wage)

= An extra $6.53 per hour

$6.53 x 40 hours = an extra $261.20 per week (most servers work between 40-60hrs per week)

So even using the bottom end numbers, Florida servers come out way ahead.

  7. by Curt_Anderson on February 10, 2025 5:37 pm
No they don't Indy. Most customers in Oregon restaurants (even Oregonians) are unaware of the minimum wage laws in this state and they tip the usual percent as they would in Florida or any other state.

If an Oregon waiter serves just one $50 meal in an hour:
    $15.95 + $23 = $38.95 per hour.

More realistically a waiter could serve at least four meals in an hour.
    $15.95 + $94 = $109.95 per hour.

No matter how you figure it, Oregon tip workers come out ahead of their Florida counterparts.

  8. by Indy! on February 10, 2025 8:37 pm

Except when they serve your cheapskate wife. Which was my original point (even though you tried to make it about Florida vs. Oregon because you knew I was right). So thanks for your support. 😌

And BTW, every time I've been to a slow moving, backwards place like Oregon - everyone is a cheap tipper. I know you guys don't tip like Florida because 25% is very common here and I wouldn't even have to go to Oregon to know 15% is more likely the commonly given tip.

Again - it's sooooooo easy to spot the people who never worked for tips. Heck, I don't even need to see you - just chat with you blindly on the board here and I "see" it. 😘

  9. by Indy! on February 10, 2025 8:39 pm

BTW, your math makes zero sense. A $50 meal with a 15% tip would be $7.50 + whatever your minimum wage is.

    50 x .15 = $7.50

  10. by Curt_Anderson on February 10, 2025 9:49 pm
    Indy,
When you said "$50 for dinner (just had dinner with the folks - $73, not $50)", I thought you were suggesting that you tipped $23. I was following suit.

Anyway, despite Oregon tip workers getting a higher minimum wage than most states, people tip here tip the same percent as anywhere else in the US.

  11. by Curt_Anderson on February 10, 2025 10:00 pm
Btw, Indy, I have worked for tips. I was a bartender for a few years in my twenties.

I find tipping demeaning as worker and arbitrary as a customer. Especially in places with counter service where you are expected to bus your own table. But even in sit-down restaurants why are we tipping? We don't tip sales clerks in a hardware store or a clothing store who may be more helpful and attentive.

Also what is the logic to it being a percent of the cost of the meal? It's as much work for a waiter to carry out an expensive filet mignon as a cheap burger.

  12. by Donna on February 10, 2025 10:34 pm

If you don't tip, I wouldn't recommend going back to that restaurant unless not tipping is accepted in Oregon because of the minimum wage law. Is it accepted? I bet it isn't.

  13. by Curt_Anderson on February 10, 2025 10:49 pm
    Donna,
As I said above, most diners don't know that in Oregon waiters and others receive at least the same minimum wage (see comment #5) as any other workers so people tip in restaurants here like anywhere else.

  14. by Indy! on February 11, 2025 12:27 am

Even his wife doesn't tip the same, but he's sure everybody else does. 🙄

And your distaste for tipping also tells us so. Unless you just made the bartender thing up. Generally actual bartenders need things like training - you don't just get behind a bar and start pouring drinks. This would also be the first time you mentioned that in what... the 15 years or so we've known each other? 🤔

Besides that? You're wife is still a cheap skate - the original point stands. You might want to avoid going back to those restaurants where she stiffed the wait staff as Donna suggested. Never know what's going to be in your food. 😉

  15. by Curt_Anderson on February 11, 2025 9:32 am
    Indy,
You may be confused about the amount of training that a bartender needs. Were you thinking that they have to pass the “bar“?

At the time in the mid 70s jobs seem to be hard to come by, when I applied for a bartending job. I was attending college and I needed a job after school hours.

I got a copy of Trader Vic’s cocktail guide and memorized about 10 or 12 drink recipes. Knowing how to make that many drinks was more than enough to get the job. Except on rare occasion, it was more than enough on the job.

  16. by Indy! on February 11, 2025 11:56 am

Again - lower standards in hick towns. You're not getting a bartending job in AGSF by "memorizing 10-12 drinks". I can make 10-12 drinks simply from my borderline teetotaler drinking experiences.
