One issue I vehemently disagree with Biden on. I resent that my tax dollars are supporting genocide.

    Donna,

Your wacko didn't say if those bullets were from Hamas guns or not. I'm guessing they were.

As I've said, I disagree with Biden’s foreign policy of merely throwing money around, money that we can't afford to spend. But, to the only democracy in the Middle East? That expenditure isn't offensive to me.

  2. by Curt_Anderson on January 14, 2025 11:21 am
This issue would be easier to pick sides if the Houthis, Hamas, Iran, Yemen, Hezbollah and other adversarial neighbors were not continuously launching thousands of rockets and missiles into Israel. Does Israel deserve to protection from those attacks? I think so.

Hamas is still holding one hundred or so Israelis who were abducted on October 7, 2023. Returning them would probably end the assault on Gaza. Hamas apparently hates Israel more than they care for their own people.

I am all for ending the assault on Gazan citizens, but I don't think we can say "oh well" and ignore the fact that Hamas is still holding kidnap victims.

Reportedly there are ceasefire talks in which 33 Israeli hostages will be released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners who were convicted or at least charged with crimes. We will see.

  3. by HatetheSwamp on January 14, 2025 11:33 am

Donna can correct me if I'm mischaracacterizing, but, because Israel is them filthy pigJews, the Houthis, Hamas, Iran, Yemen, Hezbollah, et.al., are more than justified in doing anything and everything to Israel.

  4. by Donna on January 14, 2025 11:58 am

Okay, so then you guys disagree with Israel's former defense minister that Israel is committing war crimes and ethnic cleansing, and apparently you both either disagree that Israel has committed human rights violations, or disagree with the Leahy law.

  5. by HatetheSwamp on January 14, 2025 12:13 pm

I don't know about Curt, but I do. If a majority of the Cabinet shared that opinion maybe. But, one lone wacko?... and, of course, your dementia-ridden lord and savior's string-pullers...

  6. by Curt_Anderson on January 14, 2025 12:17 pm
    Donna,
Since the start of the Israel–Hamas war on October 7th, 2023, the UN Human Rights Council has identified "clear evidence" of war crimes by BOTH Hamas and the Israel Defense Forces. Hezbollah, Houthis, Iran and others in that region have committed atrocities that meet the measure of war crimes. In fact, it's business as usual there.

That's the conundrum: no side is playing by the rules. Usually, when one side is pummeled, especially when civilians are dying in large numbers, the white surrender flag goes up. That isn't happening in Gaza.

How then does Israel get their people back?

  7. by Donna on January 14, 2025 12:23 pm

The US isn't sending Hamas aid, though, nor should we.

So you disagree with the Leahy law.

  8. by HatetheSwamp on January 14, 2025 12:46 pm

I absolutely agree with the Leahy law.

  9. by Curt_Anderson on January 14, 2025 12:50 pm
    Donna,
Patrick Leahy himself doesn't conclude that we should not aid Israel. He doesn't condemn the casualties in Gaza. He singles out individual Israeli soldiers and units that have credibly committed gross violations of human rights. I am quoting the former senator:

The law prohibits U.S. aid to any unit of a foreign security force if the secretary of state has “credible information” the unit has committed a gross violation of human rights: murder, rape, torture, forced disappearance or other flagrant denials of the right to life, liberty and personal security. Aid can resume if the foreign government is taking “effective steps” to bring the responsible members of the unit to justice.

I have condemned Hamas’s barbaric attack on Oct. 7. The perpetrators of those atrocities should be tracked down and held to account. Applying the Leahy law to Israel will not suggest “moral equivalence” with Hamas. Nor will faithfully applying the Leahy law to Israel weaken its security. Our aid to Israel will continue to flow to Israeli units that respect human rights and international law.

The secretary of state should urgently give Israel a list of ineligible Israeli security force units, including Neztah Yehuda, regularly update the list with units that commit gross violations of human rights and thereby demonstrate that no country whose security forces receive U.S. aid is above U.S. law.

Think we need to ask the question... If the "only democracy in the Middle East" is so important - how come we're providing about 90% of the military aid? The other democracies of the world are providing nickels and dimes to our billions. This should always be the standard imho. They don't need to match our contribution in actual dollars - but it would be nice if they at least matched us in % of GDP.

In the meantime? Israel is an apartheid state.

  11. by Curt_Anderson on January 14, 2025 1:14 pm
    Indy,
Where did you get that 90% figure?

"U.S. aid reportedly accounts for some 15 percent of Israel's defense budget." ---Council on Foreign Relations.

  12. by Indy! on January 14, 2025 3:36 pm

Ummm... Curt? There's a difference between military AID and a military BUDGET. AID is what other countries give them - the BUDGET includes Israel's OWN contribution.

    Hello. 🙂

"If the "only democracy in the Middle East" [Israel] is so important - how come we're providing about 90% of the military aid?' --Indy

"U.S. aid reportedly accounts for some 15 percent of Israel's defense budget." ---Council on Foreign Relations.

So you are saying that US military aid which is 90% of all foreign military aid accounts for 15% of Israel's defense budget, with Israel covering the other 85% themselves. That could be.

  14. by Indy! on January 14, 2025 4:54 pm

Yes. Why would I care how much Israel spends on defense? That's their problem. The point is we are carrying the military AID aspect of their defense. Other countries are not carrying THEIR part which tells us they are not as concerned about the "only democratic country in the Middle East" as us when THEY are actually much closer to the "problem" than us.

We could also hold back on the weapons when they are exercising their apartheid.

  15. by meagain on January 14, 2025 6:31 pm
Is Israel the only democracy in the Middle East? Is it been a democracy?

It ranks #35 in world rankings, one better than the USA. That qualifies it as a "working" democracy while the US is counted as a "deficient" democracy. I suspect the next ranking will drop Israel>

    Democracies do not commit genocide.

  16. by Indy! on January 14, 2025 7:26 pm

And who cares either way? Does anyone actually believe Israel is going to spread democracy in the Middle East? I mean... of course - other than the Fox clones?

  17. by HatetheSwamp on January 15, 2025 3:13 am

    #35 according to whom? Hmmmm?

  18. by meagain on January 15, 2025 7:15 am
According to three or 4 international orgainsations that rate democracy. Freedom House is one: UNESCO another. The Global Democracy Index another.

One of the others rates the USA at 27th as a 'flawed democracy.'

Take your pick and it does not matter. It should, however, be a wakeup call to Americans to get out of their arrogant assumption of being the best and see how the promise of America is being betrayed. America was one of the best several decades ago and it has degenerated into a danger to democracy with Trump..

  19. by HatetheSwamp on January 15, 2025 7:28 am

I thought those would be your authorities.

As I've noted in the past, I substantially agree with you.

Under Obama and, even more so, under that "dithering and diminished" "feckless dementia-ridden" Doddering Old Fool's string-pullers regimes, democratic principles... especially respect for the liberties guaranteed to American citizens in the Bill of Rights, have suffered greatly, IMO, actually tending toward Stalinism.

    However,...

I don't believe that Trump is the same sort of tyrant as The ONE and the Former Trucker have been.

Curt - Pat Leahy said that the Leahy Law should be applied to Israel. For him to phrase his statement that way implies that the Leahy Law isn't being applied to Israel.

  23. by Curt_Anderson on January 15, 2025 9:18 am
    Donna,
I understood that your disagreement with the Biden administration is any possible US complicity in allowing Israel to bomb Gaza and the resulting casualties. According to Leahy the Leahy Law would not address that.

Leahy wants to defund specific ineligible Israeli security force units, including Netzah Yehuda which have been credibly accused of human rights violations, not the entire Israel military.
    en.wikipedia.org

  24. by Ponderer on January 15, 2025 10:07 am

But... Leahy says that the Leahy Law should be applied to Israel.

I'd say that such a statement from him would suggest that he is of the opinion that the law that bears his name should be applied to Israel.

Chris Hayes update. Last night as I searched (fruitlessly) for something interesting on TV - I came across Chrissy asking questions with the D House leader (can't remember his name). Anyway, they're talking about how eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil tRump's policies are going to be and - as usual - the D guy is talking tough about how the Ds are going to "stand up to Trump" yada, yada... all the usual lies when Hayes asks straight up "So how ARE the Ds going to stop Trump?" House dude goes into a 3 minute word salad about nothing of import just like they've been doing the last 40 years.

Bottom line? Let's hope the acceleration theory works because we sure aren't getting anywhere if we depend on the pussies in the D party.

“ But... Leahy says that the Leahy Law should be applied to Israel.”. —Ponderer

Yes, but selectively applied to specific units, not all of Israel or the entire Israeli military. As Leahy wrote, “our aid to Israel will continue to flow to Israeli units that respect human rights and international law.”

I see a problem with the specific application of the Leahy Law: foreign aid money is fungible.

  27. by Donna on January 15, 2025 10:33 am

Israeli leaders including Benjamin Netanyahu, Yoav Gallant, and Benny Gantz criticized these sanction plans on the grounds that the Israeli justice system independently and adequately responded to the reported human rights violations.[32][23][33][34] Israeli Labor Party leader Merav Michaeli called for dismantling the battalion, saying it is killing Palestinians "for no real reason."[35][36]

    *

Biden just sent Israel a cool $8 billion for Netanyahu to do whatever the hell he wants, with no oversight, which absolutely will include more human rights violations and various war crimes, is in direct violation of the Leahy Law, which I'm sure is what prompted Pat Leahy to write that op-ed.
