What an idiot.

Just found out from my Mom. She's disgusted with him too. She said she chewed his ass out (she didn't use those words, but that's the impression I got).

    And his wife is immuno-compromised.

    Good phucking grief.

This is the kind of thing that makes me just shake my head in wonder and disbelief ! My big concerned is for his wife I hope she will be ok. My wife is immuno compromised as well with CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and I worry about her constantly. We are being ultra, ultra careful, I cannot imagine myself not being vaccinated.

    Donna,
That's sad about your brother. Partly because he's obviously very sick. But also because it was preventable and he probably realizes that now.

I certainly hope when I am on my death bed that I won't be regretting not doing something.

My younger sister died of cancer a few years ago. She had at least four behaviors any one of which are cancer risks. One was smoking, which she finally gave up after her terminal diagnosis.

  4. by Donna on September 12, 2021 11:17 pm
Thanks guys. I sure hope that your wife is successful in dodging COVID, islander, and I know that you're doing your best to prevent the possibility of getting COVID and then passing it on to her, which is what I fear my brother may have done. Usually when someone gets COVID, their partner also gets it. That's what worries me most about this.

So sad about your sister, Curt. I remember when you informed us of her death.

    Thanks Donna,

My wife and I live and take all the precautions necessary as if there were no vaccine. My wife's oncologist highly recommended that she be vaccinated but did say that whether her body will produce antibodies is a flip of the, coin and for those who do get vaccinated the average protection rate is only about 38% of what it would be for the rest of us, but any small amount of protection is better than nothing. The scariest part is that for someone with CLL the survival rate if they become infected with covid is only 50/50. She recently got her booster shot and all we can do is keep our fingers crossed. What the antivaxers don't take into account, or block out, is the fact that there are thousands of people like my wife across our country, and the simple act of taking a few minutes to get a couple of free shots could have a profound effect as far as saving the lives of so many of these people.

I hope your brother is improving and will have learned something valuable from this, and I'm my thoughts are with his wife in the hopes that she comes through this without getting infected. It's a scary situation.

What the antivaxers don't take into account, or block out, is the fact that there are thousands of people like my wife across our country,...

    isle,

As you know, I was vaxxed at the first opportunity.

I do know a number of people who continue not to be vaxxed. As one example, we have a niece who is pregnant. She works in the health care field. Her father is in extremely poor health.

Trust me. She takes everything you can possibly into account...

    ...and, she is anguished.

Her dad is essentially, your wife in terms of his risk due to his compromised immunity.

It's not realistic and certainly not compassionate for you paint the unvaxxed with such broad strokes.

Undoubtedly, your description of the unvaxxed is apo po to some but obviously not all.

  7. by islander on September 13, 2021 2:25 pm

    Hate,

When talking about antivaxers we are not talking about those who genuinely cannot be vaccinated because of a medical condition but who otherwise would get vaccinated...and you are well aware of that.

  8. by HatetheSwamp on September 13, 2021 2:44 pm

    isle,

My sense is that you're content to define people who have not been vaccinated by the most extreme of that number.

As I said, I know a number of "antivaxxers." None whom I know personally fit your description.

Those are three good reasons that she should be vaccinated. What's stopping her other than not wanting to offend her fellow Trumpers?

  10. by Donna on September 13, 2021 3:18 pm
If you don't have a medical excuse and you refuse to get vaxed, you're being highly irresponsible with your own life and the lives of others.

  11. by HatetheSwamp on September 13, 2021 3:36 pm

    Curt,

She's not convinced that the jab won't impact the baby. My sense is that she plans to be vaccinated after the birth. However, her cousin who is an RN and hopes to become pregnant within the next year or so remains unvaxxed...for the same reason.

  12. by Curt_Anderson on September 13, 2021 3:51 pm
    HtS,
The best medical minds recommend that pregnant women get vaccinated. Where is she getting her advice?

    Your "sense" is quite wrong.

  14. by islander on September 13, 2021 4:24 pm

    You are correct Curt,

The CDC just came out yesterday further stating that pregnant women should get vaccinated and the Vaccinations pose no risk to the mother or baby.

All of this information is readily available to anyone who wants to be better informed.

And then there is this aspect that any pregnant woman needs to know (and this information is also readily available to any and all).

"Pregnant and recently pregnant women are at a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 than nonpregnant women. Additionally, pregnant women with COVID-19 are at a higher risk for preterm birth and might have a higher risk for other adverse pregnancy outcomes."

  15. by HatetheSwamp on September 13, 2021 4:46 pm

The best medical minds recommend that pregnant women get vaccinated. Where is she getting her advice?

She knows that the best medical minds continue to change those minds regularly. My sense is that she's merely being cautious. At her young age, even being pregnant, if she contracts COVID, she may even be asymptomatic.

What I know is that she's not the Trump-loving antivaxxer that is the image of so many.

  16. by HatetheSwamp on September 13, 2021 4:51 pm

    Curt and isle,

Your blind faith in St. Anthony and is the CDC doesn't seem justified to many who know of the many sudden changes of direction that harken to a Barry Sanders' touchdown run.

In matters of trust, we are all our own light...no matter how thoroughly you'd like to compel the conscience of others.

There is weird psychological and illogical phenomenon among some people when it comes to taking vaccines. Even though they may know that their seeming inaction (not being vaccinated) could endanger the child they are carrying, they'd rather take that substantial risk over the positive action (being vaccinated) even though the many thousands of real life cases and studies have show Covid vaccines to safe and effective for pregnant mothers. They fail to realize that not choosing (to be vaccinated) is a choice and an action.

Stillbirths have doubled during covid in Mississippi. Officials are sounding the alarm.
Mississippi has recorded 72 fetal deaths in unvaccinated pregnant women infected with the coronavirus, state health officials announced Wednesday, sounding the alarm on the virus’s danger in pregnancy.

Speaking during a news conference, Mississippi State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs said those deaths had occurred since the start of the pandemic. The number, which includes only deaths that occurred past 20 weeks of gestation, “is twice the background rate of what would be expected,” he said.

“That’s quite a number of tragedies that, sadly, would be preventable right now,” Dobbs said, referring to the availability of vaccines.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

No they don't. Not on this they don't. You give me an example of a "Best Medical Mind" who has gone from being pro-Covid-19 vax to anti-Covid-19 vax.

The best medical minds are pretty well settled on the efficacy of, and beneficial and detrimental aspects of, the vaccines.

And she apparently isn't talking to any of them.

  21. by islander on September 13, 2021 5:25 pm

There is something called "willful ignorance" and Asimov gave a good example!

Mississippi Reports First Infant COVID Fatality, 72 Fetal Deaths in Unvaccinated Women

The Mississippi State Department of Health has reported the first death of a baby in the state as a result of COVID. The death of the infant, who was less than 12 months old, brings the state's pediatric COVID death toll for the past six weeks to four.

This means more children died of COVID in Mississippi over the last six weeks than during the first 17 months of the pandemic. Three children under 18 died in that initial period. The state's total COVID death toll for people under 18 currently stands at seven.

The state also announced the number of fetal deaths in unvaccinated pregnant women suffering from COVID had reached 72, and that 8 pregnant women have died as a result of the virus.

In a press conference on Wednesday, state health officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said that 72 fetal deaths associated with unvaccinated pregnant women suffering from COVID had been identified, The Associated Press reported.

In addition to these 72 fetal deaths, which does not include miscarriages under 20 weeks, Dobbs said that eight pregnant women in the state had died as a result of COVID over the past four weeks.

Just spoke with my Mom. Bill, my brother, has been home from the hospital for several days and he's wearing a nasal cannula, which is two clear soft plastic tubes that you wear around your head which fits under your nostrils, and it's connected to an oxygen tank. My Dad wore one when his congestive heart failure progressed. Anyhow Bill won't be returning to work for at least a couple more weeks. His wife, who is immunocompromised, has had one COVID shot, but my Mom didn't know which kind. I assume Johnson & Johnson. That's all she knows.

A few days ago, I spoke to the wife of our maintenance manager who died from COVID over Labor Day weekend. Surprise surprise, he wasn't vaxed. She said that a couple of months ago he was admitted to the hospital for COVID, but they sent him home. I don't remember her saying how long he was in then. Then he had to be readmitted because he developed pneumonia. Then he developed "blot clots all over his body" and died.

So Bill definitely isn't out of the woods.

I am glad you gave an update on your brother. I just heard that the J&J protection drops down to 70% after a several months. So it seems your sister-in-law is extremely vulnerable.

My doctor pals told me early on that COVID is a cardiovascular, not a respiratory disease. But obviously it impacts breathing too.

  25. by HatetheSwamp on September 19, 2021 1:13 pm

    Thanks for the update.

Hopefully, Bill won't become a, what are they called?, long hauler?

  26. by Donna on September 19, 2021 2:05 pm
Thanks, guys. Long hauler syndrom, permanent lung damage, death - all pretty much preventable. Bill used to have more sense. **sigh**

  27. by Donna on September 27, 2021 9:18 am
Update: My brother received monoclonal antibodies. It's funny - the technology used to create monoclonal antibodies is the same technology used to create the mRNA vaccines. He still gets winded climbing stairs and uses his cannula (oxygen tube thingy) as needed. I hope he doesn't have permanent lung damage. He's still home from work and will remain home until he gets approval from his doc to return to work.

  28. by Curt_Anderson on September 27, 2021 9:30 am
That's good news...sort of. Interesting about the same technologies.

  29. by HatetheSwamp on September 27, 2021 12:13 pm

It's good to know he's some better. We have a friend who got it about a year ago. She's still recovering.
