However, I find it confusing. The leading element in the takeover fight is a Jihadist group.
Islam allows for revolution against tyrants and dictators. I'm not really "happy" with the group either. It does make sense though because they're the only ones that could fight al Assad & the Russians at the same time. They claim it will be "taliban light" with some tweaks (not sure what that looks like🤔). At least the people won't be gassed and firebombed.
I'm not really sure how that's going to play in international politics. And the "hope" for not having terrorist camps there is pretty much out the window. During the 1970's- 1980's, jihaadists, IRA, PIRA (and a bunch of spin-offs), with RAF, Rota Brigada, and a bunch of the Euroterrorists in there randomly trained down there a lot. That's where the jihaadists learned to make bombs. From the Irish.
This also shows the Iranians/Chinese have their fingers in this and puts medium range missiles in North Africa. And the potential for nukes. So we'll see how that goes. This could also effectively close off all oil into southern Europe and allow silkworm missiles on the Med, and of course the straits of Hormuz are choked off by Iran.
The US has also been down there also. Russia threw a couple of hundred spetsnaz (the special forces of the GRU) against a short company ~40-60 Special Forces. They left the battlefield with less than half their people. Pretty funny.

But if you try, sometimes, you get what you need.
