Idaho has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country. Because of a surge of Covid patients inundating hospitals in northern Idaho, hospitals in that area have been forced to ration care.

The Idaho health department gave hospitals official permission to ration care. That means hospital resources like ICU beds will be available only to patients who have the best chances of survival.

There's a serious nurse shortage in CA and many other states. And many nurses are cashing in.

    ***

“In the 16 years I’ve been in this space, I have never seen this high a need,” Morris said.

That need is creating intense competition for a limited pool of nurses nationwide.

“Nurses are getting paid premiums to work in Texas and Florida where it’s surging right now,” Sugarman said. “Those nurses have to come from somewhere, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some are coming from California.”

Hospitals have been paying twice as much as pre-pandemic times for travelers, Morris said.

To entice nurses to come to California, the state Department of Public Health agreed to pay up to $145 per hour for Aya Health’s ICU nurses and more if a facility had a “critical need.” Stovall, who works for Aya, said between October and December 2020, she was paid $10,000 per week with an additional $2,000 if she picked up an extra shift.

It’s working — but not without consequences.

The money is pulling full-time staff nurses into traveling positions, further aggravating the staffing shortage nationwide. Stovall, who is based in North Carolina, said her sister-in-law took a week’s vacation from a full-time nursing gig to pick up an $8,000 traveling contract. She also convinced a longtime friend, Candace Brim, to leave her staff position and travel during the height of the pandemic in December.

“Everywhere we go people ask, ‘Can we get your recruiter’s number?’ We’ve given it out 20 times,’” she said.

In my opinion, the issue here above everything else is that COVID was politicized from the moment that the Dems accused Trump of racism when he limited travel from China early in 020 and then running Joe on the promise to follow the science.

As much as anything else, its the dysfunction of the Swamp that is our problem.

That has nothing to do with the topic.

  4. by HatetheSwamp on September 8, 2021 11:29 am

I think that it has everything to do with the topic.

People who are getting sick, especially very sick, are the unvaccinated.

Many people on SS lament from time to time, longing for the days when Americans banded together, during World War II, behind the leadership of FDR. You blame those derned Trump supporters for being too stupid and, well, selfish to act in the interests of all of us.

But, the truth is that all of our leading pols have failed to provide followable leadership in the way FDR did. All. Trump. Pelosi. Schumer. And, now, Joe. They've made the health of Americans a hockey puck to be slapshotted back and forth for political advantage.

    HtS,
So in your mind Trump supporters are stupid and selfish because of Biden.

Following that logic the German American Bund members and the America First isolationists were against America's involvement in WWII because of FDR. He just didn't lead well enough to get them onboard. Maybe it was because he was in a wheelchair that they couldn't respect him sufficiently. Where was Alf Landon and Wendell Wilkie when you needed them?

If anybody deserves the most blame for the unvaccinated because they distrust government, it's Trump. As recently as his last interview he falsely claimed he defeated Joe Biden "by a lot".

It certainly isn't Democrats who've been out there calling COVID a hoax and recommending Ivermectin in place of getting vaxxed.

Btw Sheri's brother and his wife who live in Texas have COVID. He just called this morning and reported that they're doing better than they were a week ago.

No. In your sanctimony they are.

    Trump supports being vaxxed. Openly.

And, he almost certainly did win the election. Nearly half of likely voters agree with him

As you know from familial experience. Most vax cynics are apolitical, or, at least, unaffiliated with a major party and the largest number of the vax resistant are members of minority groups.

    Donna,

I'm glad to hear that po's family is doing better.

"And, he almost certainly did win the election. Nearly half of likely voters agree with him" -pb

Yet you have nothing to support such an asinine contention. No verifiable evidence whatsoever of what you believe.

Meanwhile, there are well over eighty one million pieces of factual, documented, wholly and legally verified pieces of documented and multiply recounted evidence proving the exact opposite of what you say you believe.

While "nearly half" of the voters may want to think that Trump won because they voted for him, unfortunately for them, well over half of the voters voted for Biden and that's why hew won.

    We've been over this.

The husband-half of the on-site manager team of our apartment complex passed away from Covid over the weekend.

God damn this thing. And god damn the sociopathic idiocy that has been assuring it's continued effect on our society.

I assume your apartment manager was unvaccinated. Any clue as to why he wasn't?

My doctor friends have lost quite a few patients to COVID. They mostly vaccinated but all had underlying conditions, sometimes serious health issues.

Btw, this doesn't bode well for any sort of Medicare for all or any sort of government health program. People won't even take a life-saving vaccine when it's free and convenient.
