We got a notice a couple days ago that Donna and I were invited to go see Barack Obama at a get out the vote rally at an as yet undisclosed venue here in Tucson on Friday. Today. I think it was because Donna has volunteered with the Democratic party to do some work. It's an invitation only event and we got several follow-up texts and calls about it, making sure we were going to attend. We've been so excited!

Yesterday we got the actual info about the location and time. Doors open at 1:30. You have to be there by 3:30. The security for this thing is intense and they won't let you bring in practically anything. It's happening at a huge facility near the university... but we came to find out that it's going to be a standing only rally. Only minimal seating available for ADA folks.

I can't stand for more than twenty minutes without feeling like I need to be put in traction. There's no way I'd be able to do this. It would be torturous even before Obama came to the stage. Even Donna believes she would have trouble standing for so long.

So, we're going to have to pass on this opportunity as it turns out, damn it all. Stupid back. It keeps screwing me over in so many ways.

"I can't stand for more than twenty minutes without feeling like I need to be put in traction. There's no way I'd be able to do this."

    po,

    I understand.

024 is the first time ole pb won't vote on election day in person. I enjoyed the physical act of voting. Doing so was, for me, a celebration of our government "of the people, by the people and for the people.

In 016 and 020, we lived in a hyper-MAGA precinct here in Alabama, Pennsylvania. In 016, I stood in line about 45 minutes to vote against Hillary. In 020, I waited in line a freakin friggin EFFINhour to vote against that "dithering and diminished" "feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap."

My back is so bad now that I'm physically unable to vote in person.

I don't know how your back problems work, but the hardest things for me are standing in place... and walking slowly.

So, my heart goes out to you not being able to see The ONE in person. Truly.

I'm sorry about your severe back problem, Hts. Even with my comparitively mild back problem, I can't stand in one place that long.

  3. by Ponderer on October 18, 2024 7:48 am

And as it's turning out, I'm having a bad back day anyways. Fuckingthing. Even with seats this event may have been undoable the way it is feeling right now.

Retiring with a bad back is like
going to Disneyland in an iron lung.

Walking is okay for me. I go on walks with Donna and Mabel almost every morning as pretty much my only exercise. But standing for even short periods of time can be nearly lethal. I used to love voting in person too. But the mail-in thing just works out better for me now.

    Thanks for the thoughts, Bill.

    po,

Have I mentioned that I occasionally undergo Class 4 laser treatments?

My sister-in-law also has serious back pain but a different sort of pain than I have. About six months ago, she began to preach the benefits of getting laser treatments. She pushed me to try them. I agreed, essentially, to keep peace in the family.

I made an appointment with her chiropractor and met with him. He asked me about my symptoms and explained what he thinks is going on in my back and I was convinced to buy a package of six laser treatments, one per week. After the six weeks, I was much better. I went about two months before I bought six more treatments... and only because we were going to be traveling. (I don't do well when I'm not sitting on my own furniture and sleeping in my own bed.)

They very definitely help. The treatments here are less than $40 each. And, well worth it... for me.

All this is just FYI. I have no idea what might work for you.

Do as I do. Use a walker and sit on the seat. Though we don't have those long delays in lining up to vote.

  6. by Donna on October 18, 2024 9:25 am

Hts - I'm glad those laser treatments helped. I just told Ponderer about what you wrote.

meagain - We own a portable fold-up chair, but they aren't allowing anyone to bring anything like that into the event, and there will be virtually no seating.

  7. by Ponderer on October 18, 2024 9:26 am

I'll check into that, Bill. Thanks.

I'm actually looking into getting more radiofrequency ablation treatments. They worked pretty well the first time for about a year, but I need to see how much Medicare will cover of it. It was like $2500 when I wasn't on Medicare yet.

  8. by HatetheSwamp on October 18, 2024 9:33 am

    Let me know, po.

Our Aetna plan covers ablation but I declined. The laser addresses the CAUSE of my pain, not the pain itself.

As I understand it, ablation simply stops the pain.

    I wish you well.

Pondy - definitely ask the chiro about exercises that can help. But getting back to Obama - the one time I saw him he was easily an hour and half to 2 hours late. So if you do go - don't expect the show to start on time.

  10. by HatetheSwamp on October 18, 2024 10:27 am

    Indy,

In addition to the laser treatments, I do pt exercise at least an hour a day. In fact, my doctor wouldn't do the treatments without the exercises.

Phew! What a relief, I was afraid you were going to say you forgot to register to vote.

Seriously, sorry about you back issues. I seems that I've seen four-legged walkers with a seat option. I would think because of the Americans With Disabilities Act, etc. you'd be accommodated.

I sort of have the opposite condition. I get Theatre Goers Knee if I sit too long in a cramped seat. Very painful.
