She's nailed it!

Obama was a cool cat as a candidate in 2008, but after he won, he grew increasingly lofty. Now he’s so far above the ground, he doesn’t know what’s cool. You can’t be cool if you diss the people who took risks for you when you were a junior senator — only a few years out from paying off your student loans — taking on the fearsome Clinton machine.

We're not always on the same page, but, way to go, Mo!

Right. I'm not going to do what so many moderate Dems are doing making excuses for the super spreader event that was Obama 60th birthday party.

Good for you. Have you seen the articles on the COVID surge on Martha's Vineyard since the party?

    Donna,
This is not about Obama supposedly violating any Covid ordinances or recommendations. It is okay to congregate when everybody is vaccinated. Especially outside. Guests were all vaccinated and tested negative for Covid.

The very woke Maureen Dowd is complaining that because some people are miserable, other people shouldn't be having any fun. Why? Obama should not have scaled back his party. America needs to see vaccinated people in large groups celebrating and having a good time. Isn't that the goal of getting everybody vaccinated and wiping out Covid so we can all get together with friends and family in the future?

Maureen Dowd's piece only mentioned Covid once, and that is when quoted some another "woke" person I never heard of:
“I think the nouveaux riches Obamas are seriously tone-deaf,” said the authority on opulence, André Leon Talley*. “We all love Beyoncé. But people have so many things to worry about with Covid, voting rights, climate warming. People are afraid of being evicted from their homes. And the Obamas are in Marie-Antoinette, tacky, let-them-eat-cake mode. They need to remember their humble roots.”
    * Who is André Leon Talley? He is an American fashion journalist, he wasn't invited either.

It may fascinate you that most of the on air people at Fox strenuously supported Obama for holding the party and protested when The ONE suggested that he would scale back the party, something I don't think he did in any meaningful way.

I applaud Donna for her objectivity about Obama and, Curt, I've never known anyone as sycophantic as you.

In high school, I'm sure you were the kid who raised his hand and said, on Friday, "Miss Brown, you forgot to assign us our homework!"

Maureen Dowd's metaphor, Barack Antoinette, is, excuse the unwoke-ism, masterful. It alludes to the COVID insensitivity of the party and to the many ways The ONE lives as an unabashed narcissist.

It's certainly better than allowing unvaccinated people at the party, but IMO still unwise because of the Delta's high spreadability and the vaccines' lower effectiveness against it. I'm hearing about more and more cases of Delta among the vaccinated. I'm concerned more about permanent lung damage and other long hauler problems than dying from it, although that of course is a concern too. My age along with working in grocery stores makes me more at risk than the average person.

That's like saying because some city has a high rate of gun crimes, that large groups should never congregate even if everybody went through metal detector and were checked that they weren't carrying a gun---just to be extra safe.

The general population will never reach the vaccination level of the guests at Obama's party. So should we never go to a public place ever again? No outdoor parties? No baseball stadiums? God forbid indoor concerts and sports events. All the epidemiologists can hope for is herd immunity, not a 100% immunization rate.

You're forgetting that most of the people who were invited would have had to take planes to get there. People flying from all over the country and probably some from out of the country just to attend Obama's birthday party, besides being terrible optics, is the kind of thing no one should be doing if we are to ever to get this pandemic under control. Taking a plane for fun also puts an unnecessary strain on the environment.

    Donna,
So no vacation flights until the hesitant all get their vaccination shots.

  9. by Donna on August 15, 2021 9:24 am
    Well that's a personal choice.

Sounds like you're saying that the pandemic won't be over until everyone is vaccinated, which will never happen.

My wife will be in Martha's Vineyard in a few days to visit family. However she will be taking the ferry rather than flying into the airport. Me, being a responsible citizen, have opted to stay home. Plus I've been there done that numerous times already.

I still think then it's a good thing for the vaccinated to exemplify having a good time. Maybe the unvaccinated will start to realize what they're missing such as taking a trip to Canada or dining in any restaurant that requires vaccinations to enter.
