Back during the days of the old forum, I splained to the posting gang that my wife and I bought an apartment in a continuous care retirement community. The apartment's smallish but nice and new...carefree living and, because we have no children, when our health declines we're guaranteed care. Thinking about the future.

Lately, on Friday afternoons, we've been volunteering to register visitors to the assisted living and nursing care parts of the community. All visitors must have their temperature taken and must answer the standard COVID screening questions.

Normally, when we arrive for the beginning of afternoon visiting hours, a crowd is waiting to be given permission to enter. Yesterday, there was one guy.

Come to find out that, for a few days, visiting had been closed off to half of the facility because of an outbreak of RSV.

About 20 minutes later, an executive of the home walked out to splain to us a vaccinated member of the staff had just tested positive for COVID-19. Over the course of an hour, chaos reigned.

In the end, that entire facility was placed in quarantine. And, while we remained in place...now turning away visitors, members of staff were entering to be retested for COVID. One smiled and told us that she tested negative. Who knows about the rest?

But, gang, a vaccinated person tested positive!

Have you checked the national COVID stats!!!!!?

Oy vey!

It seems that we're in for more drama.

As you understand, the chances of a vaccinated person spreading covid to another vaccinated person is microscopically low. Unfortunately too many people are unvaccinated. The unvaccinated are 99% responsible for being the vessels of virus mutation which created the delta variation. If there was no spread there would be no mutation. My doctor friend reminded me to wear a mask when in public. I told him I will be avoiding indoor public places like the plague which it is.

    Curt,

The powers that be here are extremely cautious. The, uh, China virus began to meander our way, here in the US, a few months after we bought our apartment. Quarantine began here shortly thereafter. My mom was in a skilled care unit of a nursing home about 15 miles away. Mom's home initiated quarantine nearly a month away it was established here. As I'm sure you recall, my mom was among the first to contract COVID. Her condition was complicated by COPD and she succumbed early May, 2020.

The community where we reside has continued to fight COVID with vigor. Quarantine has been relaxed but it never ended.

Staff here received the Moderna vaccine as soon as it was available.

What I know is the greatest precaution has been taken here to keep our people free of infection. And, it's here.

My guess is that our country is in for more COVID challenges.

It's up public and private employers to make vaccination a condition of employment.

Health insurance companies should charge higher rates for the unvaccinated or higher deductible for hospitalization for unvaccinated covid cases.

Well, of course, it is a vaccinated employee who is infected.

And, I think employers can probably require vaccination but insurance companies discriminating against the unvaccinated?, I'm not sure how that would fly.

    HtS,
Insurance companies can and do charge higher rates for smokers and the obese. I doubt charging the unvaccinated more would be prohibited, although I am sure it would be litigated and politicized.

You do understand that the two shot vaccines are only about 90% effective in preventing a Covid infection, but around 95% effective in stopping hospitalization and death from Covid. The J&J vaccine is somewhat less effective. The protection of any Covid vaccine wanes over time. The odds are that in every ten cases of Covid one might person might have been vaccinated. That person is much less likely to have a severe or fatal case of Covid.

When I gather with my vaccinated buddies for a beer as I did earlier this week on a friend's deck, the odds of anybody contracting Covid in that setting are well under 1%.

It's happening! Yelp is making it possible for restaurants and other businesses to announce that they serve vaccinated customers only. Also on Yelp businesses can promote their fully vaccinated staff.

    Curt,

One of the challenges the founders of our republic created through the Bill of Rights was the inevitable tension when on party's liberty comes in conflict with another's.

There will be a lot of tension surrounding COVID in the months and years to come.

How this will work out will continue to interest me.

And, while I personally have taken the threat of the China virus seriously, I believe in the freedom of my fellow citizens. I believe that government should be restricted. My sense is that you progressives are less devoted to defending the liberty of others.

    HtS,
If private businesses wish to have only customers and employees who are vaccinated that has nothing to do with the Bill of Rights. It is a consumer information issue. In the same way that you might prefer to eat at a restaurant with an A-grade from the health department, many customers will prefer establishments in which everybody is vaccinated.

I suspect that the unvaccinated restaurants will attract few customers. And if they remain open they will suffer shutdowns due to their staff becoming infected with covid.

    Agreed.

What I can foresee that you may not is an economy in which some entrepreneurs build fortunes on serving the free, in which the patronage of the unvaccinated is encouraged.

As a point comparison, I wonder if some of the laws, rules and regulations banning smoking would go as unopposed today as they were.

If I understand Bill de Blasio's order in NYC, having the Mayor decree that my business can't serve the unvaccinated/ unmasked? I dunno. That doesn't sound Constitutional to me.
